Let's have 'na sere complaints about Mickey Mouse autocross courses. Cary Evan's layout at Pleaeantan an July 25 was fast, fun and excellent utllizat Ion of avallat Ie space. The course was designed by very scientific rethods - a ball poInt ln814 an a dinner napkin at the Gal leon dinner meg9$14g. Gary's thought wes a course vclthout f$gjf gear turns and v:lde enough for the skilled 4')Vers to pick the fast I lne. Judging from the ceasnents after the event, he succeeded In pleasing everyone. If you could go fast, it was a gas, and If yau simply fallowed the pylons lt was fun but yau dldn't have a quick run.

There was lots af action all day. Spin outs were frequent until the troops learned ti. . e course. One of the finest runs was Bab Garretsan's fantastic 62466 for T. T. O. O. Bob really got lt all together and demonstrated just how lt should be done. At the opposite end of the scale was Rol f Soltau spinning out at every turn and burning stout 20, 000 mlles off his tires on his way to a DVF. As the saying goes "If It dan't go - chrome ft, se lf yau can't be quick - be spectacular".

Our portable FA system was put to good use most of the the day. Chuck Tracy, Harv Smith, Greg Wallace and Rab I&all «ere sarre of the golden voiced announcers giving out some nf the (samntIves) straight skinny. One of the more quotable contents was I~arv's lntroductian of Bruce Anderson, "Ti. ls is your basic autocrosser".

There was no problem with workers, In additlcn to the usual hard core, volunteers were easily "press ganged" from the grId area. New nembers should note that working an event Is a great way to Cet to know people. Even Harry Barlow gave r. . e a break running flags. Who Is Harry Barlowf. . . Competit lan was fierce In many classes, scanning the results you' ll see that ln class one only one secand covered the first four cars. Class six was even closer with times separated by hundredths of a second. Guess everyone trusted the new photo eel I timers brought along for testing as there were no beefs. Your friendly club concept speed events cone:ittee has requested board approval to buy the new equipment. As announced, Cary shut the gate promptly at 4400 P. M. Sore drivers &vere unhappy about that but after a hot day at Pleasanton a tall cool one sounded like one

Best'de's be:lng an absolute nut, Chuck Forge Is nne of the Irest unusual, brilliant, and amazing individuals I have had the pleasure of knowing, Hls seemingly infinite knowledge about cars and engineering (the letter of which absorbs 40+ hours of his time each week--his jnbl) has enabled htm to succesaful I y turn three street machines into three cc7frp'et itive race machines during the past ten yea'i4.

Hts first Introduction to a Porsche came In 1957 when he plxrcgased a 1951 yellow (now red) a)rcmtncrm bodied R'oadster (featured in the January 1971 Nugget). He joined tte Continental Car Club that year, 4r(rd ran numerous autocrosses srl th the Perse'?re, ,

' A few years later, he bought a 1956

black ' Volkswagen sedan powered by a Porsche

englnp. Shortly after ewnlng thIs car, he fnund out that Vnlkswagens were allowed to race In whet was tl. en called tt. e Sedan class. So he hopped up the engine instal led the usual rac lng goodies, went thiougf' driver's school and became a I lcenserl race c'ar driver, He captured many vlctorles until It was "outl avrad. " Some Influential peeple felt that the engine modfflcatlons In racing Vol kswagens were getting out of hand; they protested and won. No moro engine changes would be al lowed. The vibrant racing career nf one black bug car;. e to a screeching halt. The car was later cnnyctrted back to a street vehicle and sole! te a frit@.

harness, threugh the steps ot removing ghreda irtf the o?d beTt, Instal'f lng the new one, getting bach Inte the cer, fastenfng the harness, and f tnal'ly popping the clutch and motoring off. As a result of this fan belt problem and others coupled with the steady competltfon against cars with almost twice the engine displacement, Chuck decided not to race It anymore. Hcemver, last fall he and a friend entered It In ttm four-hour Endure race at Cetatl and took first place fn the over"tom-I lter class. . . without a single fen belt faflurel In late 1967 he acquired his third race car. He remembe red the thr I I I of dr I v 1ng a f r I end' s Porsche (Chuck has a lot of friends) in a race the year before, at one point setting a posstble world's altitude record In a Porsche by going up a guy cct re and lancilng upside down In a pile of hay. Unfergettablef "A 1962 356B dual-grlTCe Roadster would be a neat race car. " (How dtscr fmlnat lng can one get. ) He found one for sale, bought It and immediately got to work on the eny4n~ He was lucky to have a body sponsor to repair any body and f rame damage I t might (and

did)

have. Presently he has two complete race engines, three transmlssfons, stacks of "dry" tires, "rain" tires and nflooda tires, and a multitude of parts and tools necessary to take care of almost anything.

I!I;en the mourning period was over, Chuck looked arbbhd for another potential race car. By now he also owned a 1960 Corvalr ceupe street machine and was pleased with lts performance. Why not race a Cnryal r, thought he? He tought a 1960 Corvalr foui dboi sedan, set It up for racing, ' decamterei it 1 lka wed, and put ln mucho hours making It bindle right. (One thing he has sInce dlscoverectc Corvalr parts are a hei luva lot cheaper than those &7)4'&~l Persche partsl) With bumper stickers nn 'tf'e left end right front fenders reading "I love Hy Corvatr" and "Would Ynu Bel feve Ralph Nader?", respectively, he entered It In the A Sedan class and did pretty well until the fan belt broke. (He wW nnted for I. ls sudden racfng stops to replace a 'thok+m fan belt. ) During one race the announcer observed CI;uck cl 'fmblng out of the car and rushing to the trunk (whfch is in front) to get a new tait. He declared. "I think he has forgotten whtch encr the engine is lnl" After that, Chucfc kept spare fan belts wrapped around the gearst, lft liavor c. n the floor. Establ lsf. ei record tfme for his replacing a broken fan belt was 32 secencrs flat, comr enclng the rement he unfastened I ls

A gpce weekend can m beati;„~~c~gI~„~(h:. tragic, . „";. One event I'n particular corei to r. '. IM-„, lt;~i::yfi . , Rewport, Oregon, and the very first race with the Porsc'he. Our'Ing practice for the Regloral Race Satunday I t wes pouring rain and Chuck 4W to follow the car ahead of him to stay . . on the course. Before he knew whet wes happen tng», he ran right Into the rear end of a Lotus parked alongside the course. It destroyed the front end of the Porsche, almost (lf not In fact) totaled the Lotus, and cleared out Chuck's sinuses as they have never been cleared before. 411th a lot of cooperative effort and determination, ti'e car was patche'd up and allowed to run as scheduled. Not only d'Id Chuck win the Regional Race that day, he also won the National Race on Sunday. Fantasttcl Two weeks later, he, a friend and I drove up to Kent, Nashlngton, for a National Race. One fellow who i~as at btewport also went to Kent. Having seen the tremendous crash at Newport, he couldn' t believe that Chuck had the very same car with him at Kent. nYou guys don ' t believe In sleep, do youfin Chuck Just roared when the fellnw car4 out wj th that remark, and to this day st 111 chuckles when he thinks about lt. Chuck has many, many tories he cou'ld tell about his years of racing, mplete with sound effectsl

The one time I really worried about him wes In Kent, Washfngton. It started to rain very hard after his race began. He did not have his "flood" tires on the car. As I was tieing him, lap after lap, he did not come around when he was supposed to. I

thought he must have spun out and perhaps hit someone, or ran off the course somewhere. I

panicked and came close to tears wondering what could have happened. Thirty seconds later, he came around, thank God, Indicated a spin . out' with his index finger, and kept going. (That may alsg have been the race In which he passed, going backwards, the first place car. ) Racing ln the rain can be bad newsl

In short, Chuck has thoroughly enjoyed his years . . '

of racing and plans to continue doing so as loeg ', "-.

814 GWNEQS ACHTUNG For you do I t yoursel fers when Instal I lng new brake pads on a 914-4 note that the rear pads have a different procedure to be followed than on all previous Porsche model s. The f rent brakes are handled In standard fashion where the ca I i per pistons can be careful'Iy forced back to accept the new pads. But on the rear a hex plastic cap and locknut and allen bolt must be removed and backed out respectively before Install lng new pads. The new pads are then adjusted In position to be . 006' away from the disk using the allen bolts. Check a shop menue I for further details (tt ere are two adjustment bolts per caliper, one reached through the trail ing suspension are) and do not try to force the pistons back.

Also on 914-4's and 914-6's the universal joint bolts look alike but are not. One type ls an Sk strength class and the other a IGk. Check the bolts carefu'Ily when Install lng on a 914-6. — Oink Osgood

friendly club CONCEPT,

Hords I ike "doctrine", program", "concept", etc. , are sometines very heavy words which, for the most part, have been greatl y overworked in recent years. In Golden Gate Region, a doctrine or concept was created which changed the very pr lnc I pie unde rwh ich our "speed events" were conducted.

Conce ived, promoted and sold or l gina 1 I y by Bob Buckthal, it served to take our con:petltive events out of the smoke f I I led rooms and onto the pavermnt and fresh air where they belong. The adoption of the "Friendly Club Concept", as Bob called it, hopefully laid to rest forever those long frustrating nights arguing over some obscure phase of automobll lie and how It wou'ld effect the numerous autocross classes. The Fr 1 andi y Club ConcePt ul t imatel y pervaded throughout the entire region into a plan which hopefully said that we' ll go out of our way to allow everyone to "do their thing" hut at thi sama time ne one was to get an advantage over another. The "Stock", "Cheater", and "Hodi f led" cl esses resulted along wl th certain adrinlstrat ive rules for the smooth running of the events. S)nce autocrosslng Is our prime coripet I tive event this concept Is appl led most often at those events. The f~lttee set certain basic rules which, when appl led to all, worked Just fine. Unfortunately someone wl11 occass lonal I y n. l sunderstand this concept and think that the interpretation of the rules should be as nrelaxec!" as the rule itself appears to he. This, however, Is where wa can run Into trouble, as recently occurred.

The last thing that anyone wants to do ls prevent someone frcÃr. running an event, yet an event must end somewhere or somatic. '

Accordingly the Speed Events Cormlttee set a l;00 P. PI. course closing rule sometime hack. Unfortunately, a registration

Page 10: pca-ggr.orgpca-ggr.org/files/nuggets/1971/sep/Nugget.pdf · ' ~ O. Tech Session 12 26 Dinner fleeting - Sunol Valley Coif Clui. Linda Mitchell Au toe ros s wIth Monterey Bay - Sa

elec(i«g tf«ae wea ~laad fer one event enl y, whfeh caused some problevs for late arrivals. As yeu wit I see elsewhere, the Corra I ttee has subsequently established a "Iio-closing" rule for registration but the course wl1 I st 1 I I close at b«00 P. H. and a tight grtd control will be maintained.

Applying our Friendly Club Concept here means tl'at the earl ler you arrive, the riore runs you will get. Arrive fate and you ray get only one or maybe none. The arrfval tive, fs of course, ynur choice, as ft should be. Again we want everyone to run and, most of al I, have fun wf th nc haggling.

While we calf our ruea "The Frfendly Clut Concept" they, nevertheless, are defln lteIy hard anc' fast rules and must be Interpreted accordingly. While they were vade intent lcnai ly 'loose in order ta avoid the Inevitable "nit-picking" tight rules cause, the ones Iie have must be applied equally to all. THE FRIENDLY CLUB COIICEPT WILL WORK ONLY SO LOf:G AS YOU WANT IT TO WORK. Uphold an«! observe It and It wf1 I endure. Take advantage of It and you I:ury lt and bring back the "hard days".
