Chesapeake Region

from our president

President’s MessagePresident’s Message

UU nbelievably cold! Snow,

Ice........and then 50 degrees! It

all just means that the good

driving weather is on its way

and will be here before we know it!

It’s been so bad that the Board cancelled the

January meeting (for which we will sched-

ule an additional one later this year) as a

consideration for the safety of our members,

all of whom would have been traveling

through a nasty rush-hour mess.

But that doesn’t mean we’ve been inactive

and I want to use my message this month to

bring our Region up to date with our plan-

ning.

As a matter of course, the first part of our

year is always spent dealing with annual

budgets and past year financial reviews. All

of our Committee Chairs have been furi-

ously setting their plans and activities for

the year. Thus, at our next Board Meeting,

scheduled for March 18th, to which you, our

Region members, are always welcome (see

2015 Calendar of Events, this issue for loca-

tion), we will take action to approve the

club’s expenses for the year. By that time

we will have initiated the review of the

books for 2014 using the procedures set up

in 2013. This process concluded last year

with a stellar review of the 2013 account

and, thanks to the incredible manner by

which our Treasurer, Lynda Sobus, manages

our accounts, I have every confidence that

2014 will yield similar results.

We have already had several remarkable

events this year and it all portends a very

special 2015 for our Region.

I’d like to thank all of our members who

took advantage of a very generous invitation

from our National Executive Director and

Chesapeake member, Vu Nguyen, to visit

PCA National Headquarters on February

11th and preview the new 60th Anniversary

911 GTS Club Coupe! It is a gorgeous car

and everyone experienced a real treat at its

unveiling. Thanks for the invite Vu, we al-

ways appreciate everything you do for us!

Our new Social Chairs, Bob and Kathy

Costello, have already organized two won-

derful gatherings, the last of which to Farm-

side Grill, was lauded as a new club favorite

for Chesapeake members to visit. The res-

taurant appreciated the first event so much,

they have already invited us back whenever

we’d like in the better weather!

If you missed our annual Slot Car Night,

you missed a doozy of an event. Thrills,

spills and even a bit of controversy when

one car jumped its track and landed squarely

in the slot of the lane next to it! Now, is that

“off-track” or not? In any event, a re-run

was called by our ever-vigilant Track Mar-

shall, Terrell Williams, and the evening con-

tinued to the delight of everyone 5

Chesapeake Region

from our president

present. Many thanks to Terrell and Lori for

organizing such a fun event for all of us.

Now, I don’t want to spread gossip, but ru-

mor has it that we may see a request for a

track-upgrade this year which would allow

for even more competitive driving and pass-

ing (as if we need more competition in the

Region!) So if you’re a slot car fan (yes!),

keep a look out for more news on this front.

Our Tech Committee held their first welding

class of the year (thanks to both Rob and

Jim!), the Tour Guys (Steve and Mike) are

busy scoping out new routes for us to take

this spring, Concours (with Ron and Donna)

is planning an event at the beginning of

April and the Autocross Committee (Rick M

and Pat) are gearing up for the season which

opens with our AX School on April 11th!

For everyone who lent a helping hand to

events and planning last year, be sure to sign

up for the Volunteer Appreciation Party

which our versatile VP, Claude, has ar-

ranged for us at Carson’s Creek Restaurant.

Registration is now open for the event at

clubregistration.net.

And looking further ahead into the year we

have secured our traditional Kempton Park

picnic site for the Crab Feast in July and the

planning for Challenge 46 is underway with

our reservation again at the Manor Tavern in

Monkton, Maryland; which by the way is

being moved to the weekend of October 3rd

rather than the previous date of September

19th. This new date clears us of the revised

Rennsport Reunion V weekend in Monter-

rey, CA and works with the Tavern’s sched-

ule.

Finally we have some newly considered

events which are still in the early planning

phases such as a tour to the Simeone Mu-

seum in Pennsylvania, a possible Concours

at the 32nd Deutsche Marque Concours in

May, and a Chesapeake Caravan out to the

60th Parade in June for which we hope to

attract a large group of Chesapeake atten-

dees!

As always, with so many events and plans in

motion, there is always plenty to be done

and a true need for helping hands. If you’re

interested in any of the activities mentioned

above and would like to become more in-

volved in the Region, please let me know

and I’ll set you up with one of the event or-

ganizers.

As always, I’m happy to hear from you di-

rectly and you can reach me at presi-

[email protected].

Have fun and Drive Safely!

WW ho says that Porsche people don't come out in the snow to play? Saturday, the 21st of

February, was a very interesting day from both a weather and learning perspective. On

that day, we held our third Welding Tech Session at Earlbeck Gases & Technologies.

The facility is located on the east side of Baltimore, but that did not stop people com-

ing from as far away as Hagerstown. The Tech Session had was sold out with twenty four saying that

they would attend. However, the weather had a vote in the attendance. Eleven brave members defied the

weather man's forecast of white death from the heavens. It was indeed the worst snow event of the year

and our members came prepared to battle the elements in everything from a quad cab dually with a re-

cently purchased plow to a lonely 911. I wonder who had more fun driving home?

In addition to our brave nine guys and two gals

were two members of the Morgan State Univer-

sity SAE Baja car race team. The five hours

taught on basic metallurgy, TIG and MIG weld-

ing passed quickly for all. The classroom lec-

tures on theory was taught by yours truly. It in-

cluded videos and an extremely robust white

board presentation. Particular attention was

paid in the metallurgy discussion to the alloys

that are found in our cars; e.g., 4130 chrome-

moly, aluminum and magnesium. The practice

portion was handled by providing each partici-

pant with their own welding machine and lots

of practice material. Everyone got plenty of

hands on guidance as there were four instruc-

tors. Having a low student to teacher ratio en-

sured that there was lots of high quality arc on

time. The sparks were flying and everyone's

weld beads got to a point that they were proud

of their work. Some even took home the welds

as trophies to impress their friends and family.

Please let us know if there is a need for another

class and how it might differ from the previous

Welding Tech Sessions. Maybe we can even

have it when it is not snowing and all of the

911s come out to play!

TT he January Social was a smashing success. Twenty-six members enjoyed a great

lunch. Many had food to take home from the generous portions at the Weekender.

The Weekender serves good ole fashion country comfort food. Mike O’connor and

his staff did a great job handling our large crowd and taking some time to sit down

and chat with folks. There were a few locals who come here often and were happy to see us so

close. I didn’t hear if anyone took the CC45 course directions, handed out as part of the regis-

tration process, but all attending received a copy to take and explore. Most interesting conver-

sation that I heard was between Jim Earlbeck and my wife Kathy about welding and her inter-

est in learning more. From the noise in the room, folks were having a good time telling stories

and swapping ideas of interest.

Social Social -- The Weekender and FarmsteThe Weekender and Farmste

Friends Coming Together to Sha

Page 21: PCA Chesapeake Region - March 2015 Patter

TT he February Social was at the Farmstead Grill in Baltimore. Farmstead Grill is a

farm-to-table restaurant with nearly all foods sourced locally. We had the upstairs

loft to ourselves. There were seventeen attendees, but given that the weather earlier

that day was so messy, a low number was not surprising. Those that did brave the

elements were treated to a great meal. With the limited exception of a few, all were first time

visitors. Our dedicated waiter provided some insight about the restaurant and it’s philosophy

as well as providing timely service. Some of the fun was me ribbing one of the attending about

not getting the car out enough. I believe his wife enjoyed my banter more than him. I did learn

that two of our members who attended Parade last year, actually met in Monterrey while serv-

ing in the USAF.

I am waiting to hear back from the folks who

seem to organize the Cars and Coffee pro-

gram in Annapolis for heading there for the

March Social. I am also waiting to hear if the

Tour Chairs, Mike Cook and Steve Graham,

might come up with a getaway Tour for this

event. April we will gather at the Lemon

Leaf Café in Chestertown, Maryland.
