from our president
President’s MessagePresident’s Message Greetings Everyone!
SUMMER IS HERE! SUMMER IS HERE!
AA fter, what many people
I’ve spoken with lately
have uniformly declared
as the “worst winter
ever!’ (aren’t they all?), the warm
sunshine seems to have finally broken
through here in the Baltimore/DC
area and we are all basking in some
truly delightful climate change!
I had the great pleasure recently to
join our TOUR group with a terrific group of Chesapeake members, 25
cars or so in all, in a spirited drive
through the back roads north of Balti-
more on our way to FIORI WINERY.
What a spectacular day it was for a
drive and the vineyard was the perfect
place for an early season picnic.
After a delightful lunch under the trel-
lised gardens of the vineyard, our
hosts setup a tasting session which
highlighted their award-winning
wines. Honestly, with selections such
as Pomegranate Zinfandel and Kiwi
Pear Sauvignon Blanc, one could
practically taste summer! Kudos to
our tour leaders Mike Cook and
Steve Graham for another successful outing.
This past month we were also treated
to a terrific TECH session at the COLLECTORS CAR CORALL,
where our Board Chair for Insurance,
Lee Rock, gave our members a pres-entation on insurance which left most
of us standing in line afterwards wait-
ing to ask questions and hear more!
Never would I have guessed that in-
terest would have been so high, but
trust me it was one of the best talks
I’ve ever heard; so good in fact
there’s talk of having him take it to
National’s Tech Tactics next year!
Congrats to Lee and our Tech co-
chairs Rob Mairs and Jim Earlbeck for another wonderful session, and a
very special thanks to our own Randy
Moss for inviting us into his wonder-ful facility there in Owings Mills!
Looking forward, we have PA-
RADE coming up in June and
members Rick and Patsy 5
Chesapeake Region
from our president
MacIness, have organized a Caravan out to this years event in French Lick,
Indiana! Covering two days, we’ll
meander our way out to the Midwest
with at least one stopover in horse
country. This is sure to be a very
unique event which has already at-
tracted the attention of PCA Na-
tional’s Digital Media chief, Damon
Lowney. He has asked, and we have agreed, to have him join the trip and
to record it for PCA’s website. It
should be interesting!
AUTOCROSS and SOCIAL are both on the calendar for this coming
month and your other Board members
are equally active in planning events
which should engage all interests for
our Region members. Looking for-
ward we have in planning our annual
CRAB FEAST in July, our NEW
MEMBER PARTY in August, and
CHESAPEAKE CHALLENGE 46 in October. I’m sure there will a few
surprises in between so keep an eye
out on the calendar and be sure to
come out and join us whenever you
can!
Such is the state of our Region. There
is a lot going on and even more excit-
ing events in planning. I’m always
happy to hear from you at presi-
[email protected] and look forward to
seeing you on the road soon!
Have fun and Drive Safely!

Project 944S: Part Two Project 944S: Part Two -- More ThanMore Than
More Than MProject 944S: More Than Meets the Eye Article and Photos by Aaron Miller In my previous article, I detailed the search for our new
944S and the exhilaration of finding and buying it. Gener-
ally, the process went quickly and smoothly with the seller
delivering the car to our friend for storage until we could
make arrangements to come and collect it. We named her
Red Sonja and she was every bit the fiery little fighter we
had hoped. With Red Sonja finally under the care of our
close friend, the wrinkles under the makeup could be
evaluated further. The biggest concern noted was a leak-
ing oil pan gasket which on the 944-series cars requires
engine removal to guarantee a "do it right, do it once" re-
pair. Our close friend Darwin was chomping at the bit for
a winter project and helpfully offered to pull the motor and
get to work. His enthusiasm was equally matched by a bit
of procrastination and as we slipped from 2014 to 2015,
new parts were stacking up. We set a date in mid-March
for me to fly out to Salt Lake City and collect Red Sonja.
As the date approached, Darwin got started in earnest be-
fore a family emergency divided his attention and put Red
Sonja on the back burner. We discussed pushing the date
to the right but based on our schedules, it would have
moved to June giving us a scant few days to prepare Red
Sonja for Parade. The final decision to continue forward
with our original date wasn't an easy decision to make but
ultimately it was the one we would live with.
On a cold and blustery day in March I departed from BWI
and arrived at bright and sunny Salt Lake City. A short
drive later I arrived at Darwin’s house and could finally
see Red Sonja firsthand. She was beautiful! Unfortu-
nately, her engine, front suspension and transaxle were sit-
ting peacefully next to the chassis, waiting on her new
owner to roll up his sleeves and dive in. A flurry of activ-
ity ensued, with new rod bearings, gaskets and seals going
in and culminated a little after midnight with the engine
and front suspension back in the car. A brief break for a
few hours sleep had us back in the garage, fully prepared
to finish the task at hand. As we removed the valve cover
to replace the gaskets, disaster struck in a way neither of
us would have anticipated.
We knew from the previous owner’s admission
Red Sonja had suffered a timing belt failure and 12

had received a full top-end rebuild from a “reputable Ger-
man shop” but had little supporting documentation. The
DOHC 944 motors utilize a metal chain and oil-fed ten-
sioner to keep the camshafts in-time. Imagine our surprise
and horror when we looked down into the head and saw
the tensioner held in place by gravity and friction!
One of the mounting bolts was clearly visible laying in the
head but the second bolt was nowhere to be found. Since
we had already removed the oil pan and inspected the oil
galleys with a magnet probe we were confident the second
bolt was not located within the engine. Our concern grew
once we noticed the metal oil pipe feeding the tensioner
had sheared from the stress. A frantic phone call to the
local Porsche dealership filled me with dread when I was
informed a replacement part was still available, albeit in
Germany. With a new option not feasible based on our
timeline, we had to come up with other options. In a
stroke of lucky fate, Minta’s decision to remain at home
became the lifeline we needed to get Red Sonja into a safe,
drivable state. We had recently disassembled our spare S2
motor and through Minta’s meticulous organizational
skills we knew exactly where to find our spare oil pipe.
She dropped the oil pipe into an overnight package and by
Thursday morning we were back on track. Unfortunately,
we weren’t finished with the discovery process. At some
point in the past, a mouse had decided to declare Red
Sonja it’s home and crowned itself lord of the
944. We continued to find the remnants of in- 13

festation in the form of scat and torn insulation. Our
search culminated in the discovery of a mouse tomb in
the insulation surrounding the shift lever.
We continued our assault on the drivetrain in earnest,
fixing issues as they were discovered and slowly return-
ing Red Sonja to a drivable state. My confidence in “fly
out, drive home” was eroding but I was still optimistic I
would make it to Maryland in our new car. Late Thurs-
day night we finally hit pay dirt and accomplished what
we had set out to do from the start, return Red Sonja to a
running state. She coughed to life and quickly set in to a
high idle. Oil pressure was strong and steady, we didn’t
hear any sounds of impending doom and the test drive
reaffirmed the taught handling and impressive power
delivery compared to our 944 NA. With no red flags
detected, we started to pack her up for the drive home
starting early the next morning. My confidence in our
decision restored, I quickly fell asleep.
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the herculean ef-
forts of my dear friend Darwin in the efforts to fix all of
the small issues with Red Sonja and help ensure a safe
running car. Late on Thursday evening, after we
had finished buttoning up Red Sonja, Darwin
managed to whack his forehead on a shelf and im-

mediately paid for the misstep by bleeding profusely. He
managed to keep his good humor despite the injury but was
none to pleased when I made him pose for a photo. His
friendship and support perfectly embodies the PCA motto,
“It’s not the cars, it’s the people!” and there is absolutely
no way we could have done this without him.
Tune in next month for the riveting tale of driving our
newly re-sealed 944S on a 2500 mile road trip!

Porsche trademarks GT5 NamePorsche trademarks GT5 Name Porsche has been granted the trademark ‘GT5’, sug-
gesting that a new motorsports-developed version of
one of its line-up may be in the works.
Historically, the company’s flagship high-
performance models have always featured numbers
that correlate with the FIA class in which they are
designed to race. For example,
the Porsche 911 GT3 was de-
signed for use in the FIA Group
GT3 class.
Given that there is no mo-
torsports equivalent of GT5,
however, it may be the case that
the new GT version is unlike
anything seen in the current mo-
torsports environment. The new
car may, as a result, take the
form of a flagship version of the
Panamera or Macan.
A Porsche spokesperson said: “There’s no comment
on that [GT5] in relation to what our future product
might be.”
The flagship versions of Porsche’s cars are devel-
oped by the company’s Weissach-based GT division,
which applies its motorsport expertise to develop
more focused and capable cars.
Andreas Preuninger, head of the GT division, had
previously indicated that he thought there was room
in the company’s line-up for more focused models.
When asked whether the increasing sales of Por-
sche’s SUVs would be followed by more mo-
torsports-developed cars in order to maintain the
brand’s sporting spirit, he said: “Absolutely my sug-
gestion.”
Production of GT models is usually limited but in-
terest in the line is growing, in part thanks to the re-
cent launch of the more afford-
able Cayman GT4. Widening the
range would allow Porsche to
further capitalise on its appeal.
The German trademark office re-
ceived the company’s request for
the GT5 trademark in August
2014, at the same time that it ap-
plied for the GT4 name. Ap-
proval was later granted, in Octo-
ber 2014.
Porsche has since applied for the
GT5 trademark at the European
office. This application, which was submitted on 13
January 2015, is still under examination.
“In this increasingly competitive world it makes
sense to cover any bases,” said Porsche’s spokesper-
son.

Porsche is working on a new four-strong family
of cars. The planned line-up includes a four-cylinder
turbocharged version of the Boxster as well as a new
eight-cylinder supercar which will look to challenge
the Ferrari 458.
The as yet unnamed flagship
model – thought to be carrying
the development tag ‘988’ – fi-
nally addresses the long-held
concern of many Porsche engi-
neers: that the company cannot
adequately compete with eight-
cylinder Ferraris with the classic
six-cylinder engine used by the
911.
There’s no clear news on the
shape of the 988, although it will
have strong shades of the 918 hy-
percar about its styling and in de-
tailing such as the headlights.
Expect a long rear deck, too, be-
cause of the mid-mounted flat eight engine.
The recent engine failures that stopped production
of the new 3.8-litre 911 GT3 are being seen by some
in the company as proof that the flat six has reached
the end of its natural life in terms of increasing its
cubic capacity.
Some years ago, Porsche engineers told Autocar that
the “theoretical limit” for a flat six engine was
“around 4.2 litres… after that, the weight of some
internal components gets too great [for ideal bal-
ance]”.
Switching to a flat eight layout – expected to be
sized at about 4.0 litres – will give Porsche the head-
room to extract plenty of extra
power for its flagship model,
should it wish to, with various
strengths of turbocharging.
It’s thought that the prototype en-
gine is being tested with four tur-
bos to push the output towards
600bhp – more than the 562bhp
of today’s Ferrari 458 Italia, with
more torque (likely to be above
400lb ft) available much lower
down the rev range.
As Porsche pushes towards a me-
dium-term sales target of
200,000 cars per year, the firm
has also laid plans for a new ar-
chitecture that will be used as the
basis for all of its upcoming sports cars – mid-
engined and rear-engined – and could also underpin
the next-generation Lamborghini Aventa- dor.
Porsche is also developing a brand-new 17

Development under way on new four-strong family of Porsche models, to include turbo-charged Boxster and a new eight-cylinder supercar with as much as 600bhp

In The News In The News -- PorschePorsche
Porsche GT5 and A Ferrfamily of turbocharged and normally aspirated boxer
engines, which will come in four, six and eight-
cylinder formats. The new engine family will gener-
ate much higher power densities and feature some
innovative fuel-saving tech.
Sources indicate that the new architecture will come
with the option of both mechanical and combined
hybrid/electric all-wheel drive, the latter using an
electrically driven front axle similar to that of the
918 Spyder.
Porsche’s eight-cylinder supercar is expected to go
on sale in 2017, closely followed by replacements
for the Boxster, Cayman and 911. The entry-level
Boxster and Cayman are expected to have a 2.0-litre
turbocharged flat four good for about 280bhp, with
hotter versions set to have up to 350bhp.
By 2019, Porsche should have moved its entire
sports car family to the new architecture and next-
gen engines. But the structure and components un-
derpinning the new sports car models cannot be
strictly called a platform. That’s because of the wide
variation of requirements for a family of cars that
will stretch from a 280bhp four-cylinder entry-level
model to a new range-topping model with about
600bhp.
The front-end architecture and crash structure and
the central passenger cell will be mostly the same on
all the new models. But there will be considerable
room for specification differences.
For example, the front suspension and steering as-
sembly are likely to come in different versions.
There will be one for the lower-powered Boxster,
Cayman and 911 models. There will also be a me-
chanical all-wheel-drive version and one with elec-
tric drive to the front wheels.
The modular engineering principle has also been ap-
plied to the design of the chassis’ front end, so it will
accommodate upgraded spring and dampers systems
and a wider range of brake set-ups, depending on
which model is being underpinned.
The same goes for the new structure. Porsche is
thought to be switching to a construction technique
that uses aerospace bonding, riveting and welding to
enable the basic sports car architecture to be up-
graded with lightweight materials.
Just as the Lamborghini Huracán uses a carbonfibre
rear bulkhead and centre tunnel within an alumin-
ium structure, Porsche’s new architecture is ex-
pected to be upgraded with aluminium and compos-
ite structural elements for the 988.
As for the number of body styles, the architecture is
remarkably flexible. Aside from different engine lo-
cations and sizes, it is also ‘package protected’ for
fixed-head, cabriolet and targa styles.
The building blocks for Porsche's new sports cars
1 - Three different front axles
Porsche's new sports car architecture is thought to
accommodate three different front axles. Two will
send drive to the front wheels, one mechani-
cally and one via electric motors. The hy- 18
rari 458-Beating Supercar
EditorEditor
brid axle can also be used to enhance handling by
momentary activation of the electric motor to help
the car steer into and accelerate out of bends.
2 - Shared front structures
The front crash structure, bulkhead and central
floorpan are thought to be common to all the future
boxer-engined sports cars. The 988’s structure is
likely to be enhanced by composite materials such
carbonfibre-reinforced plastic. In this, it will be
similar to the Lamborghini Huracán, which has a
‘monolithic’ carbonfibre centre tunnel and rear bulk-
head to increase rigidity significantly.
3 - New family of ‘ideally sized’ engines
The 988’s new flat eight is part of an all-new family
of boxer engines that is expected to use new low-
friction technology and ‘ideally sized’ cylinders,
which are expected to measure about 500cc each.
Turbocharging on all engines will also improve
economy.
4 - At least two separate rear ends
The new sports car family’s rear structure will
come in at least two variations to accommodate the
different engine and transmission lengths but, more
significant, because there will be three mid-engined
layouts (with four, six and eight-cylinder engines)
and the 911’s traditional six-cylinder, rear-engined
layout.

CEO Matthias Mueller: “We will see how it works.”
ATLANTA -- Porsche will begin selling four-cylinder versions of its Boxster and Cayman sports cars in the U.S. in mid-2016, CEO Matthias Mueller said. Porsche last sold four-cylinder engines in this market 20 years ago.
Mueller acknowledged that Porsche could consider four-cylinder engines in the U.S. for other name-plates.
"First of all, we will have it in the Boxster and Cayman successor," Mueller told Automotive News. "And then we will see how it works and how successful it is and how the customers will react on that, and then we will take the next decisions."
Executives confirmed last year that a new flat-four boxer engine was planned for the freshened Boxster and Cayman, but they didn't say which markets would get it. A flat-four engine has pistons that are hori-zontally opposed, instead of in line or in a V.
The engine is expected to be turbocharged, and although Porsche has not confirmed details, displacement could come in 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter versions. It would lower vehicle weight and improve fuel efficiency and handling. According to a German report, Mueller has suggested that the new engine could produce "up to 395 horsepower."
The Boxster and Cayman won't be Porsche's only four-cylinder vehicles. It sells a four-cylinder version of its new Macan crossover in China and the U.K. Until now, Porsche executives have said the four-cylinder Macan isn't slated for the U.S. But Mueller said Porsche hasn't decided about that.
Porsche sold vehicles powered by flat-four engines from 1948 through 1976. It sold inline four-cylinder engines from 1976 through 1995. Porsche's last nameplate sold in the U.S. with a four-cylinder engine was the 968 in 1995.

To Get 4-Cylinders In 2016

Cannes, France 17 May 2015 It was only legitimate and natural for TAG Heuer to be present at the side of Chad McQueen, son of Steve McQueen, and the whole team behind “Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans” for the film’s grand pre-miere screening on the famed Croisette in Cannes. As the documen-tary traces Steve McQueen’s passion for auto-motive racing with images from his now legendary movie ‘Le Mans’ and un-published archive footage made available by his son Chad, we rediscover Steve McQueen in his Heuer racing jumpsuit and on his wrist the famous Monaco, the square-shaped automatic chronograph that had just been launched back then and has since become an icon of the brand.

New Electric Sup
According to the fine men and women over at Autocar, Porsche is working on a brand new ex-ecutive car that will be aimed squarely at BMW's 5-series in size, and Tesla's Model S in terms of technology and likely pricing. The new sedan is rumored to be developed with two power-train sys-tems at launch (both driven through the rear wheels), including a true plug-in electric version, and a hydrogen fuel cell electric version. Both are expected to launch in late 2017 or early 2018. This information was gleaned through a series of patent applications filed in various markets.
This is a radical departure from the Porsches we all know and love, but as they've shown before, they are more than capable of expanding into new mar-
kets while retaining that Porsche-ness that makes their vehicles great. This new electric mid-size se-dan shouldn't be looked at any differently. If the Tesla Model S can be seen as a performance sedan, then surely Porsche can make something at as good, and more likley a little better.
According to the patent documents, the Porsche EV will be on a mostly new structure based on the incoming MSB platform. The MSB will underpin the second generation Panamera, a future Bentley model, and potentially a 'Panamera Junior' (AKA
Pajun). This EV architecture is said to visually share with the Pajun, though will likely receive different front and rear fascia treatments to differ-

entiate the two models. Both designs are claimed to be inspired by the 2012 Panamera Sport Tur-ismo concept.
Porsche has worked with the rest of the VAG group to make the MSB platform as modular as possible. Because of that modularity, they will be able to re-tain the front and rear crash structures of the plat-form and heavily modify the center section to house the batteries and the electric motor rear drive unit. This drive unit is expected to be structurally mounted, making the power-train an integral part of the rear of the car, helping to increase stiffness.
The battery version is expected to sell a lot more units than the limited production hydrogen fuel stack version. Both should easily aim for some-
thing above what the Tesla produces, so it's safe to say 420 horsepower is their minimum goal, and a range of 270 miles would be about as low as can be expected.
The rear-mounted electric power-train should be similar to the system used in Audi's R8 e-tron, with one motor on each of the rear wheels. Por-sche, however, has made their design a bit more advanced. In the patent paperwork,

the system is described as being a “hollow portal axle… that accommodates two electric motors” with a step-down gear mechanism for each wheel. That's all a little too science-y for me, but hope-fully it'll be good. The system should allow for an advanced independent rear suspension system, and with each rear motor independently operated, torque vectoring should be relatively easy to im-plement.
Allegedly, Porsche is also working on an induction charging system. This system should allow an elec-tric vehicle to park on top of a pad in the owner's
home, and be charged without need for cables or bulky wall-mounted sockets.
Porsche's current lineup is already one of the most forward thinking in the world of green-technology. They offer four fully-fledged plug-in electric hy-brids, including one of the most advanced hyper-cars in the world, and are among the only compa-nies to have raced a hybrid GT racing car. Their work with the 919 Hybrid in the World Endurance Championship, and partnerships with A123 have advanced Porsche's knowledge of electric propul-sion systems, energy recovery, and lightweight

RACE/TRACK 993 $48,000 Many on Rennlist and in PCA know my 993 to be a very well developed and prepared car that is fast and forgiving. It is that rarest of racecars in that it has taken me to the podium quite a few times and, yet, it has never been wrecked. This car spent the first four years four or five years as a street car and then became a car that I drove 99% on the track. It is technically street legal since it's tagged and ti-tled. I've actually been stopped/been given warnings by two police officers, and nei-ther of them cited me for the loud exhaust, roll cage, etc. Lucky, I suppose. I have a lifetime emissions waiver from the state of Maryland, so it never needs to be smogged again. Contact: Mark Samuel at 410-375-6114 [email protected]
