from our president

HAPPY NEW YEAR!HAPPY NEW YEAR!

YY es, it’s hard to believe that

another year has passed and

we are on our way into 2015!

And while the warm days of

summer seem so far away, it won’t be long

before we all bring our cars out of their

winter garages and set out back on the

road!

But before we leave 2014 behind, I’d like

to thank all of our members who made our

2014 KINDERTIME/GIVING BACK

Community Service event a huge success!

Generously sponsored by our stalwart part-

ners at Porsche of Towson, we nearly tri-pled our attendance over the previous year

and in the process set a new record for the

number of back packs packed for ‘Giving

Back - Linda’s Legacy’!

With a heartwarming discussion of the

Kindertime Toy Drive by founder Pete

O’Neal of WMAR-TV, our members

learned of all the children and families

who benefit from the toy drive. We also

enjoyed a spirited drive into the surround-

ing countryside on our way to WMAR to

make the actual toy donations, followed by

a delightful luncheon at Ryan’s Daughter

Irish Pub.

This wonderful effort, combined with a

record-setting, assembly-line packing of

over 200 back-packs which were distrib-

uted on Christmas Eve to area shelters and

churches, was truly special and ended our

2014 season in the grandest fashion possi-

ble!

All of this leads into 2015, which promises

to be packed with fun-filled activities and

driving opportunities. These were listed

last month, but for those who missed them,

the first few events of the year are rapidly

approaching. The AFTER HOLIDAY

PARTY will be held on the evening of

January 10th at the Yellowfin restaurant in

Annapolis. It will be followed by:

1) Our first Board meeting of 2015, always

open to our members, on January 21st,

2) The viewing of the Rolex 24 at Daytona

in the showroom of our Region spon-

sors, Porsche of Silver Spring,

3) The first Social of the year on January

30 at the Weekender in Baltimore

County, leading to,

4) Our Annual SLOT CAR NIGHT on

February 7th at the Parkville Family Y

of Maryland.

from our president

Details for these and all of our events can

be found on our website’s Calendar tab.

And finally, I’m pleased to report that we

are entering 2015 with our Board at full

strength thanks to Jim Earlbeck who has

stepped up to the Board position of Tech

Committee Co-Chair, working with fellow

Chair Rob Mairs. Jim, who owns and oper-

ates Earlbeck Gases and Technologies in

Baltimore and Beltsville, Maryland, brings

a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to

the Board for the benefit of all our mem-

bers! All we can say is......’thanks Jim and

welcome to the party.’

So, to everyone, a very Happy New Year

and all the best for a Porsche-filled 2015!

I’m always happy to hear from you at

[email protected] and I look forward

to seeing you on the road soon! Have fun and Drive Safely!

CC ome join us for an encore performance of the premier event of the season, the After Holi-

day Party and Yankee Swap. Chesapeake Region has established a reputation for the fin-

est and fiercest Yankee Swap in PCA, one that has been copied by other regions, but

never quite duplicated. The social hour and dinner are spectacular enough, even in a

group that defines itself as a “social club, with a serious car problem”, but the Yankee Swap makes

the event.

A “Gift Exchange” is merely a mild description of the feeding frenzy that takes hold at this triple

steal event. Chesapeake Region, despite being below the Mason Dixon Line, puts the “Yankee” into

Yankee Swap…. The good stuff is coveted, hoarded and only grudgingly given up under duress. The

original emcee team of Alban and Gutjahr, more popularly known as The Bob and Manny Show, will

once again host this sell-out event.

Each person who wants to play just needs to bring a wrapped “car-related” gift, valued at $25 to $30.

(Of course, if you prefer, you may attend the event and not participate in the Swap, but be prepared to

feel left out once the fun begins!) Be sure to bring a gift that you’d be happy to take home, because

you never know what will happen! All gifts are placed together and names are drawn one at a time…

each person has the choice of choosing a new gift, or stealing one that has been opened before. Don’t

worry, the rules will be explained prior to the start of the Swap and Manny and Bob will make sure

you laugh so much your cheeks hurt!

Concours Grand Prize W

erienceerience Winning Gift at PCA Parade

THE PORSCHE DRIVING EXPERIENCETHE PORSCHE DRIVING EXPERIENCE

WW e were very fortunate to attend the 59th Parade held in Monterey Califor-

nia in June. Cheryl had to attend meetings held by National for the Zone

Representatives. I volunteered to help Ron Gordon with the concours. I

was also recruited to help with the Zone 2 party. While there we enjoyed

two tours, one to the Canepa museum and one to Big Sur. We also attended the Welcome

party which was held at Monterey’s Fisherman’s wharf. But one of the best events we at-

tended was the Concours banquet. At this banquet they give out the awards for the cars

judged best in show. After the awards are presented and the speakers are finished the door

prizes are given out. Some of the prizes this year included Porsche color coordinated lug-

gage and an IPad. They would call the names out and as usual you must be present to win!

When they called the grand prize winner it sounded familiar but no one was approaching

the podium. We then realized they had called Cheryl’s name but we were both so shocked

it went right over our heads. It was still surreal even after she brought the grand prize

back to the table. The grand prize was a two day Porsche Sports Driving School experi-

ence which is held at the Barber Motorsports park in Birmingham Alabama. After the

party was over and we had returned to our room, Cheryl immediately went on line to start

checking out possible dates for me to attend the school. Rather than use the prize herself,

she looked at me and said happy 60th! My birthday was only 30 days after parade and a

milestone year for me. The weekends obviously book first, and the soonest date she could

find for me to attend was the end of October. Once the school date was locked down, she

immediately booked the airfare and hotel. Porsche has an agreement with Rossbridge

Renaissance hotel located just minutes from Barber Motorsports Park. Their Renaissance

hotel shuttle picks you up at the airport and also shuttles you to and from the track daily

for your motorsport driving experience.

The shuttle picked us up and had us at the track by 7:45am. They served us breakfast

daily before our classroom session. The day began with our chief instructor giving us a 30

minute briefing on driving basics to use in the car, in addition to techniques used in car

control. There were 30 people in the class, which included some spouses of the students

who had come just to observe. After the classroom session they broke us into 6 groups

and lead us to our shuttle for the track. The groups consisted of 5 to 6 people. My first

workstation was the skid pad. The skid pad was comprised of a one acre paved sur-

face that was kept wet by a sprinkler system. To me this was the hardest exer-

cise. Our car for this exercise was a 991 with PDK and the PSM was turned off. We

15

Claude Taylor

were instructed to take the car fast enough that over steer

would bring the front end around and you would spin .The

test was to see how to control the car once the rear end has

lost traction. The magic happened at about 18 mph. My

group consisted of 5 people which gave us around 6 min-

utes of skid pad time. This is an exercise that you could

spend all day practicing, but unfortunately we were allot-

ted on 30 minutes at each station. The next exercise was

the autocross station which consisted of cones laid out

every 10 feet. We used a Cayman S with PDK and ce-

ramic brakes and had 3 times to run the course. The first

run was with the instructor and then we were on our own.

The final station before heading to the track was accident

avoidance, where we had a chance to use two different

cars; a Boxster with PDK and A 991 with a manual trans-

mission. We practiced 3 exercises and the headed to the

track.

Track time consisted of driving a car following the in-

structor in the lead car. All the cars had radios so the in-

structor could communicate with us while we were on the

track. The instructors were in Turbo S 991s and my first

time out I drove a Turbo Panamera. Track sessions lasted

between 20 and 25 minutes, the other cars that I used were

a Carrera with PDK and manual and a Boxster GTS with

PDK. Only one set of Carreras had a manual transmis-

sion. The instructors did a great job of showing the proper

line and giving good feedback while driving 70 plus mph

and looking in the rear view mirror watching our line on

the cars that were following. Barber Motorsport is a beau-

tiful track with challenging elevation changes, which were

much easier to learn when doing follow the leader with the

instructor using the best line. We were treated to lunch at

the Museum that lasted one hour followed by more track

time with a new instructor in a different car. The track day

ended at 4:30, but the fun continued with a dinner that

night hosted by Porsche at the Rossbridge hotel. We were

strategically seated in groups of 6 – 8 with one instructor

per table. I sat with two couples, both of which the men

were taking the school while the spouses were there to ob-

serve. Again the cars were the common denominator, so

meeting and talking to the couples with a mutual passion

for Porsche was the best part. People came from all over

to attend the Barber Motor Sports Driving School. Some

came from as far as Sao Paulo Brazil and Costa Rico to

California and Texas. Ironically, including me there were

4 people from Zone 2 including Potomac Region, Chesa-

peake Region and Central PA region.

Day two was a continuation of the previous exercises,

with the skid pad configuration including large figure 8’s,

during which we were timed for the fastest time. It had

rained the night before, just to make it a little slicker. Ex-

ercise 2 of the day was a timed fasted lap on the Autocross

course. Station three was used to practice heel toe down-

shifts; I need a lot of practice on that one! Wrapping up

the morning was more track time. The instructors would

pair us up with comparable drivers and take us out for

more follow the leader. After lunch three groups were put

in Cayenne’s and taken on an off-road excursion. Less

than one percent of Cayenne drivers will ever drive their

cars off-road but the Cayenne is an incredible off roader.

After the off-road excursion we went back to the track for

another exercise they had set up which was doing launches

with a turbo S. We were doing 0 to 60 and then braking; it

was easy to hit one G on accelerating and stopping. We

finished up the day on the track about 3:45pm at which

time we were taken back to the classroom and given cer-

tificates, and then heard closing comments by the lead in-

structor. The day concluded by walking to the Museum to

look at some of the incredible bikes and cars. Barber Mu-

seum has the largest collection of Motorcycles in

the world and one could easily spend all day in

the Museum. The layout and displays are phe-

nomenal and they have a volunteer staff that works on

preservation and restorations. Finally, our shuttle took us

back to the Hotel and I finished my evening by enjoying a

great dinner with one of the couples from California.

My two days at Barber’s Porsche Motor Sport driving

school was an incredible experience for me and I feel for-

tunate to have been able to attend. The school is well or-

ganized with first class instructors and the cars are great.

This was the first time I have driven new cars at speed on

a track. Experiencing this I now realize how easy it is to

drive the new cars verses my track car which currently is a

1983 911SC.

Giving Back and Kindertime Toy Drive.Giving Back and Kindertime Toy Drive.

TT hank you to Porsche of Towson for sponsoring

our Community Service Event. We should all

be very proud of or accomplishment at the

Giving Back campaign and Kindertime toy

drive. About 50 PCA members arrived at Porsche of Tow-

son at 9:00AM on Sunday morning. We unpacked a van

full of backpacks and clothing. We then sorted the cloth-

ing by size and put them in backpacks ready to deliver to

homeless shelters in the local area. This wonderful group

of Porsche enthusiasts managed to sort and pack clothing

into over 200 back packs and load them into a van ready

for delivery in about 45 minutes. One thing that was

prevalent during this whole process was the joy and com-

radery of all the participants. We had a goal of funding

200 backpacks and thank to the generosity of our members

Community ServiceCommunity Service

Kinder Time andKindertime and

and some local businesses we raised enough

money to sponsor over 230 backpacks.

Our members all brought an unwrapped toy to

donate to the Kindertime toy drive. Pete O’Neil

from WMAR TV was there and he informed us

about the toy drive and how it all got started.

We had a large pile of toys to donate to children

in need. Pete filmed us and the big pile of toys

for a news article promoting the toy drive. We then loaded

our cars with the toys to take them to WMAR TV. But we

could not do this without a little 60-mile detour through

the beautiful Maryland countryside. The tour was arranged

by Steve Graham and what a great job he did. The weather

was a little overcast but fortunately no precipitation. I

have a feeling that Steve took care of the weather too. We

delivered the toys to WMAR and then headed to a won-

derful Socials Lunch at Ryans Daughter in Belvedere

Square. It was a great and wonderfully rewarding day.

Many thanks to all.

Wishing you all a peaceful and happy holiday,
