Installation SequenceInspectingFor DamageExamine each speaker unit carefully forsigns of shipping damage. If there is anydamage do not install the system.

If there is any problem, call theappropriate number listed in thewarranty information.

All the items shown in the illustrationshould be included. If anything ismissing, notify the retailer.

Save the carton and its inserts in caseyou need to transport your PCWorksFourPointSurround system later.

    1. Read through the instructionsbefore installing the speakers. Theinstructions assume you have a4-channel sound card, one thatsupports DirectSound3D and hasfront and rear stereo outputs. Ifyour sound card has a singlestereo minijack line output, pleaseread the note under VolumeControl on page 8.

    2. Place the satellites and thesubwoofer at appropriate sitesnear your computer. Attach thestands, if necessary.

    3. To help you identify eachsatellites channel later, applythe appropriate preprinted labelto the rear of each satellite. Besure both the satellites chosenfor the front and rear have thesame cable length.

    4. Connect the four satellites to theback of the subwoofer enclosure.Leave all the wires accessible.

PCWorks FourPointSurround consistsof a powered subwoofer, four satellitespeakers and a volume control. Allfive speakers are magneticallyshielded.

The subwoofer is designed to sit onthe floor beneath a desk, and soundsbest in this position. The satellitesused for the front left and rightchannels should flank the computermonitor. The satellites used for therear left and right channels can beplaced on the desktop, on floorstands, or attached to other sites withhook and loop fasteners.

    Overview

  • 3A C DB

Speaker PlacementThe front left and front rightsatellites should be placed to thesides of the monitor. When placingsatellites on the desktop, installthe desktop stands. If you wish tosave desktop space, use the hookand loop fasteners to attach thesatellites to the sides of thecomputer monitor (see page 11).

If your are lucky enough to haveside walls close to your listeningposition, excellent placement for theleft rear and right rear satellites isalongside or behind your listeningposition, slightly above ear level(use the hook and loop fasteners, see diagram A). Do not beconcerned if this is not practical, since any rear satellite placement to

front satellites. Try the extremecorners of a desk using the desktopstands (C) or attach the rear satellitesunder a desktop or at the sides of adesk using the hook and loopfasteners (D).

The subwoofer does not contributeto directional sound effects. Itsoptimum position is on the flooragainst the wall. The closer thesubwoofer is to the corner, thestronger the maximum bass output.Alternately, it can be placed on a shelfor other sites, but its maximumoutput will be reduced.

the left and right side of thelistening position will provide strongdirectional and surround effects.

The rear satellites may be installedon their convenient floor stands (seediagram B). When listening, thestands should be positioned to theimmediate left and right of yourlistening position. The stands aresmall enough to be stowedunderneath or alongside a deskwhen not in use.

The rear satellites may also beplaced in any convenient sitesalongside the listener, including sitesslightly forward of the listeninglocation. The rear satellites do nothave to be at exactly the sameheight, nor at the same height as the

    5. Connect the Volume Control tothe subwoofer and then to thesound card line outputs.

    6. Connect the power supplyadapter.

    7. Listen to the system and adjustthe Subwoofer Level control forthe most pleasing bass output.

    8. You may wish to experimentwith satellite placement brieflybefore concealing the connectingwires and making the installa-tion more permanent.

  • One pair of satellites has cables9 feet (3 meters) long; the otherpairs cables are 12 feet (4 meters)long. Typically, the satellites inthe rear will require longer cablelengths, but the satellites areotherwise identical. If you needextra cable length for the frontchannel satellites, use the oneswith longer cable there instead.

A panel of eight self-adhesivelabels is provided to identify eachsatellite. To start, apply the small, square FRONT RIGHT label to theback of a satellite (see diagram A).Then wrap the remaining, longerFRONT RIGHT label around thesatellite cable just behind the plug(see diagram B).

Insert the satellites plug intothe corresponding output jack onthe subwoofer (see Speaker WiringDiagram).

the outside sockets in theapex joint.

    4. Slide the back of the satellitesdesktop stand into the front ofthe slot in the apex joint. Theslots front is the side furtheraway from the rear leg socket.Make sure the stand issecurely pressed into the slot(see Diagram F).

    5. At the base of the rear leg, gently pull on the satellitecable to remove any unneces-sary slack in the cable.

    6. Insert a rubber plug into thebase of each leg, taking careto feed the cable out the shortnotch in the rear leg (seeDiagram G).

The rear satellites (with theirdesktop stands attached) may beinstalled in their floor stands.1. One leg of each floor stand

has a full length slot, withshort notches opposite theslot at each end. Insert asatellite cable inside one ofthese legs by feeding it downthe length of the full lengthslot. At each end, feed thecable through the shortnotches (see Diagram E).

    2. Ensure there are no feetattached to the satellitesdesktop stand. Insert thesatellite end of the leg/cableassembly into the middlesocket of the apex joint. Makesure the satellite cable exitsthrough the short notch andnot the full length slot (seeDiagram F).

  • 9Adjusting Output LevelIn most instances, the PCWorksFourPointSurround Volume Controlwill be the most convenient way toadjust the overall playback level. Itresponds instantly and doesntrequire you to pause games orprograms. But there are otheroutput level controls present insoftware to consider.

Versions of Microsoft Windowsand most other operating systemsoffer an on-screen sound levelcontrol, while most game pro-grams provide yet another one.For the PCWorks FourPointSurroundVolume Control to perform at itsbest, these software levelcontrols should be set to anoptimum position and thenleft alone.

Set any software volumecontrols to approximately 75% oftheir maximum output level. Thisshould allow the PCWorks Four-PointSurround Volume Controlto achieve the highest outputlevel desired when set to itsloudest setting.

If the PCWorks FourPoint-Surrounds maximum output isstill not sufficient at the extremesetting of its Volume Control, tryincreasing one and only one ofthe software volume controls toincrease overall output.

If you find the optimum outputlevel of the PCWorks FourPoint-Surround system occurs at too lowa setting of its volume control, reduce the setting of one softwarevolume control (preferably theoperating systems output levelcontrol) to achieve greatercontrol range.Note: Some software volumecontrols may introduce distortionwhen set to their maximum level.Experiment to achieve thecleanest sound.

ImportantPlayback LevelsPCWorks FourPointSurround isintended for individual or smallgroup listening and will achievesurprisingly high output levels. However, playing the systemcontinuously at overly loud, distorted levels on heavy bassprogram material may cause itsinternal fuse to blow.

The fuse can be replaced only bya qualified representative. To avoidthis inconvenience and a possiblenon-warranty repair charge, reduce the playback volume whenthe system shows obvious signs ofstress, i.e. it sounds raspy, fuzzy, and/or muddy.

Mounting The SatellitesTo a flat surface:To mount the satellites the side ofa monitor or other flat surface, use the self-adhesive hook andloop fastener squares.

To the wall:To wall-mount the cubes onstructurally strong surfaces (awall stud or wood panelling),screw the No. 10 screws into thematerial. Allow their heads toprotrude about 1/4 inch to fit into

results from the subwoofer placedon the floor in a corner. The leastbass output results with the unitpositioned away from any corners orwalls.

Once you have adjusted thesubwoofer level control, leave it inthat position. It should not be usedto compensate for differences inrecordings or games.

Have a clear line of sight from yourlistening position to the satellites. This prevents their higher frequen-cies from being blocked. It is notnecessary for each satellite to beaimed directly at the listener.

The relative strength of low bassdepends on how close thesubwoofer is to intersecting roomsurfaces. The most bass output

Optimizing The SoundOf Your System the keyhole slots on the back ofeach cube (as shown below).

The plastic anchors supplied willbe needed to secure the screws inmost wall surfaces. If so, drill 1/4inch holes in the wall, then tap theanchors into the holes until theyare flush with the wall. Then screwthe screws into the anchors untilthey protrude about 1/4 inch.

Be sure to apply the stick-onrubber feet to the back of the satel-lite cubes. This assures an acousti-cally secure installation.
