    The Wolverine

    By John MulderigCatholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Does the idea of a giant susamurai armor made out of an indestructible -- alas, fictional -- alloy called adamantium strike yothe coolest thing ever? If so, then the macho super

adventure "The Wolverine" (Fox) might just bemovie for you.

Viewers addicted neither to outsized gadgetry nthe Marvel Comics X-Men mythos of which this extension, however, may find director James Mangaction picture a heavy lift. That's largely due to

physical and emotional angst endured by the ticharacter (Hugh Jackman) who also goes by the mcasual handle Logan.

Ostensibly, Logan would seem to have a lot gfor him. Not only can he sprout tougher-than-steel also adamantium) claws from his hands at a momnotice, but his body has miraculous powers of healing too.

Ay, but there's the rub: Logan's invulnerability

resulted in virtual immortality. And, after more thcentury of hanging around, he's as bored, blasedownright world-weary as any 1950s French phi

pher. Then there's the fact that, along the way, he dentally killed his true love. Darn!

Perhaps a trip to exotic Japan might alleviateblues? To justify the jaunt, we open on flashbackWorld War II that find Logan a POW sweating it oa heavily reinforced hot box that happens to be locacross the bay from the doomed city of Nagasakithe mushroom cloud looms, Logan saves the life ofof his captors, an officer named Yashida (Ken Ymura).

Flash forward to the present, and the aged but nally grateful Yashida (Haruhiko Yamanouchi), nfabulously wealthy industrialist (what else?), is fadeath. He summons his old friend for a final visit.

Naturally, Yashida has a fetching granddaugMariko (Tao Okamoto), whose position as his makes her a target for bad guys. How many tattYakuza types can Logan's built-in Ginsu knives and dice? Um, quite a lot.

Fortunately, the relentless combat involves moderate gore, and occasional flashes of wit offer srelief from the fog oftestosterone.

Less welcome is the fact that Logan and Marikoonly fall for each other, but fall into bed togethwell. They do so despite the obvious detail that Logmark-of-Cain lifestyle does not exactly lend itse

    long-term commitments.

Additionally, a scene where the otherwise convenally heroic Logan almost murders one of the prinvillains (played by Brian Tee) in cold blood -- Laverts the guilt of killing him only by accident --not sit well with morally mature audience members

The film contains constant action violence with s

blood, ritual suicides, a nonmarital bedroom scene,

nudity, mature references, at least one use of th

word and occasional crude and crass language.
