PRACTICE NET TO PITCH – A VIEW FROM THE CHAIR Many will see the negatives of the last year of cricket but there are a huge number of positives to focus on.

On the same weekend our Under 16 girls and Royal Senior women won grand finals. It was an incredible way to celebrate the success of female cricket program. Payneham really are being celebrated as a club at the forefront of community female cricket not just locally but being recognised throughout the country.

To those that make this all possible thank you very much. The Jansen and Von Einem families a special thank you. To our senior men’s cricketers that have also embraced the program and helped coach and guide the teams thank you very much.

Our junior program grew this year, particularly in the sub junior section. We had 3 under 10 teams and we have invested in a roll out pitch (coupled with one we hire) and now host up to 3 games on a Friday night at Payneham oval.

Early on Saturday morning we have Blasters for under 8 girls and boys that we run, coupled with some 150 children playing senior blaster cricket scatted around the oval.

Well done to Shaun Grant and all involved in our junior cricket program all not winning premierships we continue to provide opportunities to young players in our community. Special mention to Graham Cartwright for holding the under 16 team together whilst having to play with a combined Walkerville side.

Junior cricket will continue to present challenges in the coming years. We need to get enough people involved to make our program a success, the more helpers the easier the work.

Our senior men’s cricket although not successful on the field have kept numbers not just stable but increased slightly. We welcomed a number of new players to the club and look forward to them being around for a long time.

Training got off to a poor start this year, those in charge of the changeroom develop failed to consider we made need to use our facilities at some stage. A big thank you to the East Torrens District Club for making their second nets available to us for the first 4 months of the year. This made it difficult to have a cohesive base for the club. That coupled with the continued challenge of Covid.

This coming season will be the first season, we hope, that will not have a major impediment to face. The pitch, clubrooms, changerooms and training facility interruptions are now all behind us. That being the case the committee have taken the decision to return to a fulltime coach of the Payneham Cricket Club. Now that we have everything in place, excuses for performance will be harder to find.

Financially we continue to struggle without enough fund-raising opportunities being taken. We continue to monitor our expenses to try and make sure we do not put the club into an untenable position.

I wish to thank our sponsors who have supported the club over the past year. Their input is crucial, and I encourage all members to use their businesses whenever possible.

I would like to thank all of the members of the club for their great work and congratulate all trophy winners. In particular Tony Durdin for being recognised for all of his great work over a very long period with the awarding of the KJ Duke OAM Memorial Trophy.

In finishing a massive thanks to those that volunteer at Payneham Cricket Club. Every volunteer is crucial in supporting our club. A very appreciated mention to all of our committee members particularly those that take lead roles in our club.

Special acknowledgement must be made of retiring members of the committee. Don von Einem Jnr as President has been a strong leader at the club and since retiring from work life has had a huge amount of hands-on input. Mark Colley, our Club Secretary, will be sadly missed. His quick wit and quirky sense of humour has been of great relief when we have faced tough times. That coupled with his genuine passion for the club and a fair go he will be hard to replace.

In all I now think we have made it to the end of the tunnel of troubles that have plagued us over the past 5 or so years and we are now emerging into the light of a new dawn.

Yours in cricket

1st XI SEASON REVIEW Payneham ended the season relegated to A3 where we hope to regroup and establish pathways back to A2 and then to A1.

It was obviously a difficult year for the team and the Club. Runs were hard to come by whilst wickets seemed to come regularly enough, but we were never defending enough of chasing just that few too many. There were a few reasons for the performances – our training processes were impacted by not having access to our own grounds whilst the Council completed renovations to our changerooms, injuries impacted our team structure, our attitude and subsequent inability to concentrate for long periods in games and a brittleness to our batting line up we never quite resolved – we had only 4 partnerships for the season over 50. Just not enough.

That said there were some highlights. We blooded new players like Sam Lucas, Jordan Habib, and Hamish Towers. Sam looked to be a player we can continue to develop and become a leader. Hamish also, looked to be a player that the Club will be able to build on and around. Duncan Dolling had another mighty season and proved every bit the Celtic warrior he looks like – he did continue to set examples for the desire to be in and win games.

Robbie Westley, sporting a genuinely bad salad, had a good season with close to 300 runs. Tristan Rex played one innings of 78 that demonstrated all the talent we know he has -and we hope that ‘Pumper’ can build on that result going forward.

2nd XI SEASON REVIEW Max Hughes, 2nd XI Captain

The 2020/21 season was always going to be an interesting one with the addition of the new COVID-19 rules of no afternoon tea, no shared drinks, and with the continual risk of the whole season being shut down. But the B grade were up for the fight and had a good season. With very much a young team, quite often with the average age of the team in the very early 20’s, we only just missed out on a finals berth, finishing 1 win out of the top 4.

When we eventually were able to get on the park after a pushed out start to the season, it looked all good for the B’s with three home games at Payneham Oval to start up, however the first couple rounds didn’t quite go to plan, with two losses, firstly to Hope Valley and then to Adelaide Lions. But then from Round 3 the young lads were much more competitive.

The round 3 game against Marion was our turning point, young Sam Lucas showed the rest of the club what to do when you are playing two-day cricket, you attempt to bat all day, and the young fella almost got there, batting for over 60 overs for a well fought 90 (setting himself up for an A grade debut in the weeks following and he never looked back). The win felt good, and it could easily be seen the feeling was one the lads wanted to strive for again and again going forward.

But then COVID hit, the state had a brief ‘pause’, Round 4 was cancelled, luckily not lasting more than a week off. Then, as would become quite common through the season, the A’s needed some top up players and Round 5 didn’t go our way, but from Round 6 onwards the tide started to move in our direction.

Round 6 v Glenunga, round 7, v Para Hills, Round 8 v Pooraka and Round 9 v Golden Grove all resulted in W’s. Winning is infectious (perhaps not the best word to use in these here times, but we will go with hit), and the boys really started to get around each other, the moral was high, the lads were loving their cricket, and that’s exactly what you want from a young group.

Some great performances over those 4 games start with Justin Millard’s hard fought 45 to get us to a good total against Glenunga (R6). Then having Para Hills (R7) 5 for 12 bowling first and then watching Hamish Towers (50 and first half century in senior cricket for the young lad) and Anant Sapra (65) put on a 96-run partnership to set up the win. Only a week later then watching Miggi Panditaratne (60), and Ben Cameron (75) put on a 126-run partnership to set up our highest total for the year (245) against Pooraka (R8). Followed by Jiggy Patel doing what Jiggy does best with the bat (27 off 18 balls) and ball (4/21 off his 9 overs) to easily account for Golden Grove (R9)

Round 10 was tough against Hope Valley, but we finished the season on a high note (if without a win due to the elements) playing some great well fought cricket against eventual grand finalists Adelaide Lions, watching Nolen Titus (13 from 51 balls) open the batting and bat for over 20 overs and then Miggy (57 from 154) and Will Bakewell (34 from 87) putting on a 78-run partnership really showed how far the group had come with knowing the aim is the bat time, and if you do that, you will always put yourself in a good position.

All up, a promising season for the B grade, with plenty of young (and old) players showing they have what it takes to continue to push for wins for Payneham.

IN MEMORIAM

Marty Bradshaw It is with great sadness that the Payneham Cricket Club advises the playing group of the passing of Marty Bradshaw, a Club life member. Marty joined the Club in the 1976/77 season and played continuously until season 1990/91. He returned to the playing field again in seasons 1996/97 and 1997/98.

During the course of his playing career, he was captain of the 3rd XI, 4thXI and 5th XI in four seasons. Marty was a very good all-round cricketer, an astute captain and confidant and mentor to many. In addition to serving the Club on the field, he was also a wonderful servant off the field. He was the Club’s President for four seasons, a committee member for two seasons, a PSA delegate for 9 years and was an ATCA delegate for 1 season. Since his retirement from active service Marty continued to support the Club through sponsorship, attendance at Club social functions and was a regular at Payneham Oval to watch cricket and catch up with mates. 155 matches Seasons 1976/77 >> 1998/99 3275 runs @ 20.6 HS 103* (1977/78) 97 wickets @ 20.4 BBI 7/17 (1977/78) Captain - 77/78 (5thXI), 80/81 (3rd XI), 83/84 (4th XI), 84/85 (4th XI)

Phil Rebbeck It is with much sorrow that the Payneham Cricket Club report on the passing of club stalwart and Life Member Phil Rebbeck (Rebs).

Phil commenced his career at Payneham as "A" Grade Captain/Coach in 1977/78 and was 1st XI cap number 247. Phil came to Payneham after successful career in District Cricket which included 5 First-Class matches for South Australia. Phil continued as a player at Payneham until 1982/83 season. He returned as a player from 1989/90 through to 1993/94 and was C Grade Captain in season 1992/93.

Rebs played 112 games for Payneham over 11 seasons and in that time, he amassed 1988 runs at an average of 20.5 with a highest score of 136 (on debut for the club).

With the bat Rebs still holds some club records

Highest Club 7th Wicket Partnership 201 3rd XI, Dec 1991 with CP O’Donnell Highest 4th Wicket Partnership @ Payneham Oval 186, Oct 1977 with R Chenoweth One of only 4 players to make a century on debut 136, Oct 1977 v Flinders Park

Rebs also loved to have a bowl and captured 65 wickets at an average of 23.5 with his Best Bowling 5/70 vs Unley in the 3rd XI. From 1981/82 to 1982/83 and 1991/92 to 1993/94 he was a member of the General Committee and he also served as a member of the Social Committee from 1991/92 to 1992/93.

In season 1994/95 he was elected as the Chairman of the General Committee and continued in that role until the end of season 1997/98. Phil was then elected to the Office of President in season 1998/99 and continued in that role until the end of the 2005/06 season.

The Payneham Cricket Club wish to pass on our sincere condolences to Phil’s wife Chris and family on this sad occasion. Phil will be remembered as a terrific cricketer, an even better bloke and a person who served the Payneham Cricket Club extremely well. The Payneham cricket community is the poorer with the passing of Phil Rebbeck.

DENNIS PLUMMER Dennis was the oldest son of a Club stalwart Keith (Tim) Plummer and first represented Payneham in Saturday morning junior cricket. His senior career commenced in season 1962/63 and he played 70 matches including 31 in the First XI until season 1968/69. Dennis returned to the Club in 1974/75 through to 1978/79 and played a further 54 games including 46 in the First XI. He was a solid all-round cricketer playing mainly as an opening/top order batsman but also bowled useful medium pace. Dennis was an excellent Club man, serving on the committee in 1975/76 and on the selection committee in 1978/79. He could be relied on to attend all Club functions and working bees, etc. He continued to support the Club and was a long-term trophy donor. RIP Dennis”
