What Gove wanted from STRB

Gove asked for:

• removal of 195 days a year limit

• 1265 directed hours a year

• end to rarely cover

• admin protection

• PPA

• lunchtime duties

STRB said NO

STRB rejected everything he asked for. The only concession was the removal of the list of tasks BUT our contract still says teachers should not be asked to do admin tasks.

Last year, STRB gave him everything he asked for. STRB met in October & November.

Lessons to draw

• Striking works

• The STRB turned down Gove - because he is so controversial - but not a concession from him.

• Gove doesn’t have the political capital to overturn the decision.

Talks

• Immediately after the 17th October strike, Gove offered talks

• NUT/NASUWT cancelled strike

• Gove dragged out talks, first meeting was on 25th February 2014.

• NUT have called strike and will call it off if there is anything of substance on offer.

The public back us!

• 46% said unions are right in most of their concerns about education policy and schools, and the government should listen more to them.

• 19% said unions were an obstacle to reform and that the Government should stand up to them.
