Title Of Main Article

On October 1, 2013 I was honored to become the newly appointed “Executive Director” of the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, capturing the reigns from my predecessor Mr. Warren Reed for whom held this position for over a decade. I obviously recognize that I have some pretty large shoes to fill, but I’m up to the challenge and excited about the great tasks ahead. That being said, the future, although no doubt challenging, has never been brighter for the shelter and for the animals which this entire existence is all about.

An amazing partnership has been developed over the years between Griffin Pond Animal Shelter and the community. As you all know, times are now very difficult and Griffin Pond would never be what it is today without the dedication and continue support of our volunteers, donors, fosters, general supporters and staff. Each and every one of you is an important part of the successful tenure Griffin Pond Animal Shelter as experienced. This speaks volumes about the humanity toward our animals and the character of citizens within this region.

Griffin Pond shall always welcome community participation. Our doors are always open to anyone who wants to help out. There’s barely a day that goes by that volunteer walkers don’t visit and walk our dogs in the shelter, which we all certainly appreciate. The never ending donated supplies and monetary contributions never cease to amaze me. I cannot thank the community and active volunteers enough for all their support especially those that continually arrive on a daily & weekly capacity. Local veterinarians are also greatly appreciated for whom are a large part of maintaining the health of the pets in the shelter.

One of my many observations about shelters has been lengthy stays of animals. Extended shelter existence exposes animals to diseases and increased stress. These tenured animals pose specific challenges and complexities to the staff and volunteers as well. My team has worked vigorously lead by our new “Operations Manager” Ms. Kristen Anderson for whom always thinks outside the box, is proactive 24-7 and who recognizes the

Our Board of Directors Letter from the Director

importance of utilizing rescues and foster homes in order to increase the probability of successful adoptions, at the same time, always remembering the importance of placing our animals within responsible, kind and respectful venues.

I’m proud to announce within the past month or so we have placed several dogs in loving homes that had been at the shelter for nearly a year. This was accomplished due to the new team being proactive, utilizing new tactics, as well as recognizing the importance of modern media. As with any new team a new innovative vision and fresh network of contacts has ultimately benefitted the animals. There’s no greater joy than watching a furry friend walk out of the shelter with their new family in tow. With that said our fuzzy cats are being attended too as well. We’re attempting to expand our fostering & rescue network with some progress. Our partnership with the retail store “PetSmart” is ongoing whereby several of our cats are housed being supervised by wonderful volunteers.

Make no mistake about it, this profession is immensely rewarding. I’m pleased to have been given the opportunity to be part of it as the Executive Director of Griffin Pond Animal Shelter.

Note: Successful shelters are the ones which are totally involved and supported by the community which it serves.

Title Of Main ArticleTips & Care

1. Keep your cat inside. Outdoors, felines can freeze, become lost or be stolen, injured or killed. Cats who are allowed to stray are exposed to infectious diseases, including rabies, from other cats, dogs and wildlife.

2. During the winter, outdoor cats sometimes sleep under the hoods of cars. When the motor is started, the cat can be injured or killed by the fan belt. If there are outdoor cats in your area, bang loudly on the car hood before starting the engine to give the cat a chance to escape.

3. Never let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm, dogs can lose their scent and easily become lost. More dogs are lost during the winter than during any other season, so make sure yours always wears ID tags.

4. Thoroughly wipe off your dog’s legs and stomach when he comes in out of the sleet, snow or ice. He can ingest salt, antifreeze or other potentially dangerous chemicals while licking his paws, and his paw pads may also bleed from snow or encrusted ice. Morton Pet-Safe Ice Melt

5. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter, as a longer coat will provide more warmth. When you bathe your dog in the colder months, be sure to completely dry him before taking him out for a walk. Own a short-haired breed? Consider getting him a coat or sweater with a high collar or turtleneck with coverage from the base of the tail to the belly. For many dogs, this is regulation winter wear.

6. Never leave your dog or cat alone in a car during cold weather. A car can act as a refrigerator in the winter, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

7. Puppies do not tolerate the cold as well as adult dogs, and may be difficult to housebreak during the winter. If your puppy appears to be sensitive to the weather, you may opt to paper-train him inside. If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness or breed type, take him outdoors only to relieve himself.

8. Does your dog spend a lot of time engaged in outdoor activities? Increase his supply of food,

particularly protein, to keep him, and his fur, in tip-top shape.

9. Like coolant, antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats. Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle, and consider using products that contain propylene glycol rather than ethylene glycol. Visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center more information.

10. Make sure your companion animal has a warm place to sleep, off the floor and away from all drafts. A cozy dog or cat bed with a warm blanket or pillow is perfect.

Leonard cleaned the wounds, gave Scrappy some antibiotics, and sent him to the Griffi n Pond Animal Shelter (GPAS) for recovery.

After a few days had passed and the wounds appeared to make minimal progress, Scrappy returned to MVH. After the swelling had subsided, Dr. Leonard discovered that an elastic hair tie was embedded in Scrappy’s skin! His neck was so swollen during his previous visit that the elastic band was invisible to the naked eye. Dr. Leonard and his team at MVH surgically removed the hair tie and proceeded to fall in love with the little guy.

Two drains and 62 stitches later, Scrappy returned to GPAS and was nurtured back to health and happiness. Even though this incident is believed to have been an accident by a small child, acting promptly could have helped avoid such drastic measures and expenses. Scrappy’s owners diagnosed

Scrappy themselves, rather than seeking professional help. Although their intentions were good, their actions did more harm than good.

Scrappy recuperated in a foster home and has found a forever home with his new family. He has such a calm and lovable disposition.

In the News

Dr. Leonard and his team at Memorial Vet Hospital (Throop Office) gather around happy and healthy Scrappy after removing his stitches. Scrappy made a full recovery and has found his forever home.

1. Monitor small children around animals. This is for the safety of both the child and the animal.

2. Act promptly. Early intervention is key!

3. Try not to diagnose the issue yourself. Seek professional assistance as soon as possible.

Please Consider Fostering An Animal!

During busy times, foster homes for animals are crucial. You can help! Read on for more information.

There are many reasons why foster homes are needed in an animal shelter organization, such as:

• The pet is too young to be adopted and needs a safe, healthy place to stay until they are old enough to go to their forever home.

• The pet is recovering from an illness or injury and needs a place to recover.

• The pet is showing signs of stressed, has not been properly socialized or needs to be better evaluated to be placed in the proper forever home.

By Kristen Anderson

By taking an animal in need temporarily into your home you would be freeing up a spot at the shelter so another pet can be take in.

Fostering pets has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. This is why I will always continue to foster. I truly believe that adopting one dog may not change the world, but it will change the world for that one dog. Fostering works the same! The transition that sometimes occurs from the time a foster walks into your home and until it leaves, is remarkable. I encourage everyone I encounter to consider fostering. With every foster they have taken a little piece of my heart. I do cry. But knowing that I’ve made a difference for one more pet, placing them in a fantastic home, allowing me to foster the next one, is a huge reward. And at the end of a long day, that text or e-mail that is from a past foster’s new family just saying hello is absolutely priceless. This is why I will continue to foster.

Please, as our busy kitten and puppy season is around the corner, consider fostering. For more information on fostering a shelter animal, contact [email protected].

Recipes

Tuna Tidbits • 6 ounce can of tuna • 1/4 cup water drained from tuna • 3 T cooked egg white, chopped • 1/4 cup cornmeal • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour

Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine tuna, egg white and water. Add cornmeal and flour and blend to form dough. Knead into a ball and roll to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into one-inch sized pieces. Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes. Makes 12 cookies.

Peanut Butter Treats

• 2 cups whole wheat flour • 1 cup rolled oats • 1/3 cup peanut butter • 1 1/4 cups hot water

Directions Preheat oven to 350° F. In a large bowl, whisk together all the dry ingredients. In a smaller bowl, beat the eggs lightly. Add water and peanut butter. Gently combine the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients. Knead with your hands until you have a smooth ball of dough. Take a rolling pin and flatten out the dough. Use a cookie cutter to cut out fun shapes. If you’re feeling lazy, just leave the dough as is, and bake it like one whole cookie. You can always break them up after they’re cooked. Make sure you’re using a non-stick baking sheet or spray it with cooking spray. Bake for 30 minutes, or until golden. If you want the dog treats to be softer, take them out 10 minutes earlier.
