DimensionsAll dimensions quoted for natural stone are nominal and as mostare hand cut, they will be subject to tolerances. The area coveragequoted in the brochure includes the appropriate joint widths toenable the correct amount of product to be purchased to cover agiven area. Where space is critical and particularly when a circleor feature kit is being incorporated into a design, it is essential thatthe product is dry laid in order to understand the gaps required tomake the feature work. Retrospective correction of gaps once ajob is underway is not always possible. Basic laying patterns withjoint widths are available upon request from Pavestone. Wereserve the right to change dimensions and pack sizes withoutnotice.

ColoursOur reconstituted stone and concrete products contain naturalaggregates and pigments and are manufactured in productionbatches. This means we cannot guarantee that products fromdifferent batches will have identical colouration. It is thereforeadviseable, when using several packs of the same product on aproject, that product is used randomly from all of the packs toachieve an overall blended appearance. Variations in colour andshading will occur in natural stone paving. The swatchesreproduced in this brochure are as accurate as reprographicprocesses allow and are indications of the overall hue produced bythe variety of colour variations in the given product. It is essentialthat you view the actual product at your stockist prior topurchasing. It is also advisable that when the chosen product isdelivered to your site, that you inspect it to deem it suitable priorto installation. When laying multiple packs of natural stone paving,care should be taken to ensure that product is drawn equally fromall of the available packs as the project progresses rather than onepack at a time. This eliminates odd patches of colours and will givea seamless and more natural blend to the finished project.

MaintenancePressure washing is not recommended as it will damage thejointing and the face of concrete paving. We only recommendLithofin® cleaning products and we are happy to advise on theuse of these if warm soapy water and a stiff broom fails to satisfy.Specific spillages of strong coloured liquids should be wiped offthe paving immediately with a damp cloth to prevent anypermanent damage.

WarrantiesIn the unlikely event of our products reaching you in a less thansatisfactory condition, please notify your supplier immediately whowill be happy to organise replacement product. Please note thatif a product is knowingly laid with a defect apparent prior to layingthen we reserve the right not to replace the product and will notaccept any responsibility for costs incurred to rectify.Defects affecting the product functionality that appear, within oneyear of purchase, will be corrected by way of replacement productand may or may not include some assistance to rectify dependingon the circumstances. No consequential losses will be accepted.M-Coat® paving is guaranteed for 10 years, from the date ofpurchase, not to be damaged by frost or to suffer fromefflorescence staining. Given normal domestic garden conditionsM-Coat® paving will resist staining from most naturally occurringphenomena. Specific spillages should be wiped off the pavingimmediately with a damp cloth to prevent permanent damage.The guarantee on M-Coat® paving is limited to the replacementcost of the defective product only and does not extend to financialreimbursement to cover the installation works or any problemsassociated with installation.M-Coat® paving must not be pressure washed to clean it, norsubjected to deicing salts or chemical treatments or patio sealants

of any kind as these will invalidate the warranty. All products have CE certification and comply with the necessaryproduct characteristics and requirements within the UnitedKingdom and European Union.

SealingPavestone only recommends Lithofin® sealers, used in accordancewith the manufacturers instructions.

Porcelain PavingPorcelain Paving needs to be laid on a sub base and full mortarbed like natural stone paving. However, and very importantly, aslurry primer is needed to be applied to the reverse of each tileprior to laying to facilitate full adhesion. Without this coating,adhesion of the tile may fail. Essential Maintenance Guide

The Use of SealersSealing paving can protect against permanent staining and makecleaning your installation easier.

We recommend that you wait 12-18 months before sealing, asthis will allow any potential issues with the installation to becomeapparent and for any efflorescence to weather. Sealing beforeefflorescence has concluded may trap any salt build up under thesealer making the efflorescence extremely difficult to remove.Before sealing, make sure that the paving is thoroughly cleanedand the joints are refilled. Test the sealer in a small, inconspicuousarea before applying to the whole installation.

It is also important to note that sealing may change the aestheticof the paving and/or affect the slip/skid properties of the paving.Additionally, highly trafficked areas on driveways may requireregular reapplication.

EfflorescenceEfflorescence is commonly identified as a white mark thatsometimes occurs on Concrete Paving, on brick work andvery occasionally on Natural Stone pavers.

WHY DOES EFFLORESCENCE OCCUR?Efflorescence is the accumulation of crystallised salt on thesurface of the paving. In the case of Concrete Paving, saltsfrom within the cement rise to the surface of the pavingwhere they accumulate causing a white mark. Efflorescencemay also occur on Natural Stone products depending on thechemical composition of the stone and the local weatherconditions.

Efflorescence is an unpredictable, but temporary, process.Once all the salt from the paving has risen to the surface itis commonly worn away through use or by weathering.This process seldom takes more than 12 months.

DOES IT ADVERSELY AFFECT THE PAVING?Efflorescence does not adversely affect paving. It may,however, mask the surface of the paving.

HOW CAN EFFLORESCENCE BE REMOVED?Efflorescence will naturally wear off through use andweathering, and under normal circumstances disappearswithin 12 months. Efflorescence may temporarily disappearwhen wet.

WHAT ARE THE OTHER OPTIONS TO REMOVE IT?In most cases scrubbing the paving with warm, soapy wateror a mild bleach solution will reduce the build up of salt fromthe surface of the paving. This breaks down the crystallisedsalt causing it to be more readily worn off through use andweathering.

In extreme cases of efflorescence, an acid wash may need tobe applied to remove the salt.

It is important to note that the salt may again form on thesurface of the paving if the efflorescence process has notfinished. Consequently, acid washes should not be applieduntil the efflorescence process has concluded.

Concrete Block Paving and Jointing SandDuring installation of your paving, Jointing Sand is used to �ll thejoints between block pavers. The sand will compact over time;however, water �owing over, or through, the joints of a newlycompleted installation may wash away some of the sand. It isimportant to re�ll any lost sand during the 12 months followinginstallation to maintain the structural integrity of the installation.

Jointing Sand is available from all good, local builders’ merchants.We recommend using Brett Jointing Sand to guarantee that youare using a high quality product. A stabilising liquid may also bemixed with the sand to help prevent further loss. Please be awarethat stabilising liquids may mark or damage the surface of thepaving. Marking or damage caused by stabilising liquid is notcovered by any guarantee provided by Brett. If using a stabilisingliquid follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and test on a small,inconspicuous area of the installation �rst.

Please note the above does not include permeable paving productas a specialist joint �lling is required for the permeable pavingrange. See ‘Specialist Care for Classico, Aura and PermeablePaving’ for further information.

Cleaning Concrete Block PavingIn the months immediately following completion of the installation,only sweep the installation with a hand broom or brush.

TIP : When the installation has been completed, save some ofthe left over blocks or �ags and put them in the garden sothat they weather at the same rate as the installation. Shouldyour installation become stained or damaged you will be ableto replace the relevant section with the weathered blocks.

Specialist care for Classico, Aura andPermeable PavingBrett Permeable Chippings are used with Classico and Auraimpermeable pavers as these installations have larger joints.Jointing Sand is used to �ll the upper part of the joint over thechippings. It is important to replace any chippings or sand lostfrom the joints during the 12 months following installation so thatthe paving settles correctly.

Joints in Permeable Paving, such as Omega Flow and AlphaAntique Flow paving, are �lled solely with Brett PermeableChippings. In all cases, loose chippings and sands should be sweptback into the joints and topped up if necessary.

Use of equipment that vacuums or water blasts the paving mayremove large amounts of Jointing Sand, reducing the structuralintegrity of the installation.

Acid WashingIn cases of severe staining, an acid wash may be applied to removea stain. Care should be taken as incorrect application may etch,bleach or prematurely age the paving surface. Natural Stone andDecorative Concrete Flag Paving are more susceptible to thesee�ects and results of acid washing could be aesthetically worsethan the original stain. Therefore acid washing is notrecommended on these product types.

Hydrochloric acid is the most common acid wash and can beobtained either as an industrial chemical or as a proprietaryconcrete cleaner. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructionsbefore applying the product. We recommend you take thefollowing measures:

Wear suitable protective clothing, including rubber gloves andface protection at all times

Refer to the Health & Safety Executive for up to date advice onall safety measures (Tel: 0845 345 0055 )

Ensure metals and other materials that may be a�ected by acidare suitably shielded

Typically, a solution of no greater than 5% acid content shouldbe used

Test the acid wash in an inconspicuous area �rst

Dampen the concrete with water before applying the acidsolution to assist its reaction with the surface layer

The acid solution should be applied to the complete installationto maintain a uniform visual appearance

After application, wash liberally with water to dilute anyremaining acid

Acid Washing can fundamentally change both the aesthetic andthe structure of the paving. We strongly recommend calling theBrett Technical Services line on0845 608 0577 beforeundertaking this procedure.

Grit BlastingGrit Blasting involves blowing abrasive grit at the concrete toremove the stain. The technique may remove several millimetresfrom the top of the paving and may signi�cantly alter the pavingtexture and/or appearance.

Grit Blasting should only be performed by a specialist, professionalblast cleaning service provider.

Dirt and Stain RemovalDirt may be removed from the installation throughsweeping or hand washing using warm, soapy water.

The following table o�ers recommendations for removalof the most common stains.

BEVERAGES Scrub with warm, soapy water. For morestubborn stains use a household bleach diluted with water toa 1:10 solution and then rinse thoroughly with clean water.

CHEWING GUM Freeze with ice cubes or an aerosol freezingagent before scraping o�.

OIL Where oil has been allowed to stand for some time and isdry, brush on a proprietary engine cleaning �uid (availablefrom most car accessory stores). Then wash away theemulsi�ed oil with water. For recent wet stains soak up excessoil with paper towels or an absorbent cloth. Do not wipe, asthis will spread the stain. Cover the area with a dry, absorbentpowder, such as Portland Cement, and leave for 24 hoursensuring the area remains dry. Repeat until the powder nolonger absorbs the remaining oil then carefully remove thepowder taking care not to smudge it. Treat any remaining drymark as above.

PAINT If wet, soak up excess paint with paper towels or anabsorbent cloth. Do not wipe, as this will spread the stain.Then scrub the area with hot water and a householddetergent. Dry paint can largely be removed by scraping.

TYRE MARKS Scrub the area with hot water and a householddetergent.

RUST Use a proprietary rust remover or concrete cleaner.

MOSS & ALGAE Use a proprietary weed killer. These are moste�ective when applied during warm weather. The deadmaterial can be scrubbed away after a few days. Alwayscheck acid content before application. See the ‘Acid Washing’section for further information.

VEGETABLE OIL/FATS Scrub with hot, soapy water or milddetergent.

NOTE : DO NOT USE DE-ICING SALTS, POOL CLEANINGAGENTS OR HIGH-PRESSURE WASHERS AS THESE CANSTAIN OR DAMAGE THE PAVING OR INSTALLATION.
