Cezanne was born in the South of France and studied in Paris. France is on the other side of
the Atlantic Ocean.

Cezanne liked to paint still lifes. Here are two examples.
![Page 4: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
A still life is a painting of fruit, flowers, food or objects that are NON LIVING. Cezanne
painted close to 200 of these.
![Page 5: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Cezanne also painted more than 20 self portraits.
He said he wanted the models to stay as still as an apple!
Maybe this is why most people weren’t willing to “sit” for him in a painting!
![Page 6: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Portraits of Paul and Madame Cezanne
![Page 7: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Cezanne concentrated on an object’s basic shape and its color. He liked to paint apples a lot because they didn’t move and he could
observe them for as long as he liked.
![Page 8: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Cezanne painted dozens and dozens of apples! He studied apples and once said, “I want to astonish Paris with an apple!”
![Page 9: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Look at the apples in this picture. They look real because they have “depth.” They are three dimensional or 3-D and you don’t need
glasses to see it, do you?
![Page 10: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
PERSEPECTIVE is a technique that makes us believe an object on a flat surface has DEPTH.
![Page 11: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
DEPTH—A cube has depth.A square does not have depth—it looks flat.
A cube has depth---it doesn’t look flat.
![Page 12: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Circle and sphere—one is flat and one has dimension or depth.
A circle is flat….
A sphere is like a 3-D circle!
![Page 13: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
A triangle is another flat shape. What is the 3-D shape of a triangle?
![Page 14: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
It’s a CONE!!!!!
![Page 15: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Apples and oranges are spheres. They have depth. They are not flat.
![Page 16: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
This is a painting by Paul Cezanne. It is of apples and oranges. What shape are apples and oranges?
![Page 17: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Dish of ApplesPaul Cezanne also knew that there were different colors in apples and oranges too. Look at all the different colors in these apples. What colors do you see? Doesn’t it look like you can take one of these apples and eat them?
![Page 18: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Let’s Try to Draw a Cube
![Page 19: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Making squares look like a cube! Now the squares look like they have depth!
![Page 20: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Look what happens when we do this with different colors!
![Page 21: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
And now look at what we put INSIDE!
![Page 22: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Now let’s try to draw a cylinder!
![Page 23: Paul Cezanne The Apples](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022062310/56816760550346895ddc336f/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Can we make an apple look real?
Remember two very important things:
3-D (depth)AndColor—shading
Remember an apple is NOT flat—it is not a circle it is a sphere.
