Introduction Beyond Human Design Charts map consciousness in the Mental, Spiritual, Emotional, and Physical layers of consciousness over a six month period of time. In addition, composite charts show how a person functions when born as well as how they function when cognition is activated at 3 months of age. Different calculations are used for each layer of consciousness taking into account the timing of the world under consideration.

One of the great contributions of Human Design, as taught by Ra Uru Hu, was the use of an 88 degree arc to determine the Pattern of Orientation of a chart. In waking consciousness, this arc is calculated based on the Sun, but in Spiritual consciousness it is calculated based on the arc of the Moon. Each calculation arc is important because it accounts for actual degree position of the planets and the way the Lines of the I-Ching Hexagrams impact a person’s body map, especially in the position of the Sun/Earth and Moon/Shadow.

The Solar Charts are calculated using eighty-eight solar degrees (or minutes) to determine two positions for the Sun and two for the Earth. This Sun/Earth positioning determines the Sun/Earth I-Ching Hexagram and Hexagram Line used in reading the chart. The Sun/Earth positions repeat during the year in different combinations activating different line combinations in the Hexagrams. Similarly, the Lunar Charts are calculated using eight-eight lunar degrees (or minutes) of arc of the Moon to determine two positions for the Moon and its corresponding shadow used in reading the Lunar maps.

This Study document is designed as a reference document for use in reading a chart. It is assumed that those using it have a background in calculating and drawing charts and in interpreting the way they function in a influencing the energy configuration impacting an individual. Each individual’s chart is unique and must be read according to the context and energy of their life.

How to Use the Reference Keys to the Patterns of Orientation

Each of the 64 Hexagrams with its description is noted for quick reference to its page number in the expanded Pattern reference key. Use this reference to identify the Hexagrams of the Sun/Earth both Natal and Prenatal or Natal and Postnatal, with its leading keynote. Often it is useful to find the expanded patterns and read their associated keywords to formulate a hypothesis about how the energy might be used over time. Thus, if you are looking for gates or hexagrams involved in any Pattern, go to the number of the Hexagram/Gate, and see the page and Hexagrams for the expanded patterns. For example Gate 1 is in the astrological sign of Scorpio and is related to patterns with gates 2, 12, 7, 49, and 4, depending on the lines of the Sun and Earth in the natal chart. Thus, the associated keywords may be important in any in-depth analysis of a chart with the Pattern of the Sphinx (Self-Knowledge). Does the Pattern change from prenatal to postnatal chart or across the other patterns? Such questioning gives depth to your chart analyses.

Eleanor Haspel-Portner, Ph.D.�About the Author ��Eleanor was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 11, 1944 at 11:10 am EST. From the earliest time �she can remember, Eleanor was gifted with seeing auras and energy fields around people. Knowing that this gift was essential to her core being, she pursued a formal education with the intention of bridging �scientific and esoteric knowledge in grounded and responsible ways. ��

Eleanor received her Ph.D. from The University of Chicago, Department of Comparative Human Development, the first interdisciplinary Social Sciences department in the United States. She completed her post-doctoral clinical training at Rush-Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago and got her clinical psychology license first in Illinois in 1974. Subsequently, Eleanor continued to study extensively in social science and esoteric fields. She has been a Transcendental Meditator since January 1974 and she traveled to India based on a meditation in July 1978. Thus, Eleanor uniquely integrates her background and training in the Social Sciences (psychology, biology, anthropology, sociology) with esoteric studies.

By applying multidimensional Noble Sciences Tools™ that she developed and validated, Eleanor helps people transform their lives. Throughout more than forty years of private practice work as a clinical psychologist, clinical hypnotherapist, Reiki Master/Teacher, and Transformational Life Coach, and astrologer, Eleanor helped thousands of individuals, couples, and groups synthesize their life experiences in practical ways for living healthy, successful, and creative lives.

Eleanor strongly believes that each individual’s core Self manifests fully when given support and encouragement. They met in India on August 13, 1978, as predicted by Eleanor’s Mentor Astrologer, Katherine de Jersey, and they have been married since. They live with their Siamese cats and their Labradoodle.
