Hello everyone
Busy time coming up! You’ll find your entry form for our Annual Awards Exhibition in October attached to this email, along with the usual guidelines and roster form. Everyone who enters is expected to do at least one roster—two would be better! Also, we’d love to see plenty of demonstrations during the 3 days so please let us know when you’d like to do a demonstration. These demonstrations are informal and a great way to interact with visitors to the exhibition—a great opportunity to show the versatility of the watercolour medium.
The special category for this years’ exhibition is “Song Title” which has infinite possibilities—how about ‘Ghost Riders in the Sky’, ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, ‘Lady in Red’ - the choice is endless and I, for one, cannot wait to see your interpretations of this subject!!
We have an exciting Guest Hour this month on Tuesday, 18th June—Cindy Lane will be coming along to show us how she produces her stunning short videos which she then posts on social media. If you google “Cindy Lane Art” you’ll see several of her videos and you’ll find more information on her website https://cindylane.com.au
The July meeting is our AGM which means that annual fees are due at the end of June—$100 for membership and $30 if you have a gallery on our exciting new website. If you’d like to have a gallery on the website, please contact our website manager, Debbie Ey, at [email protected] If you had a gallery on our previous website, please don’t forget to update your details with Debbie if you haven’t already done so.
The AGM also sees the election of the Committee—as I am sure you have heard, our Secretary, Marion Power, is moving over to be the Treasurer because Derek Newton is stepping down. That means that we need a new Secretary—if you would just like to join the committee, that would be fine because we can share the position around ie one person to do the minutes, one person to answer website enquiries etc if necessary. To continue to function efficiently, we need a new player on the committee - it is going to be an incredibly exciting year but we need help not only with a new committee member but from all our members as well …….
We have had an amazing response to our invitations to the International Watercolour Exhibition Fremantle next March. We will have paintings from Italy, Poland, Spain, France, Belgium, the Nordic WS, Finland, Singapore, the Philippines, Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City, China, India, New Zealand, South Australia, Victoria and the Many Hands Art Group from Alice Springs. So we can truly say that this is the first International Watercolour Exhibition in Australia of this kind! We know we also have visitors coming from Italy, Poland, China, the Philippines and New Zealand. Guest artists who are also sending a painting are Amanda Hyatt, Julie Goldspink and Alan Ramachandran. We have had a couple of glitches along the way but they will be resolved. Our application for funding to the City of Fremantle Arts Grant, to pay for the frames was turned down much to our disappointment. However, Penny, Lucy and I have had meetings with the Mayor of Fremantle, Brad Pettit and the Senior Projects Officer who deals with the Arts grants and we are going to re-apply in the next round of grants in September. If that fails we have a Plan B and a Plan C which will be explained at the next meeting on Tuesday 18th June! Nothing is going to rock this boat!!
Please remember to send in your entry confirmation which you will have received by now—the deadline for your entry is 21st June. If you are unable to email or send the form to me, just call or email me that you would like to enter and I’ll make sure you are included.
We are hoping to finalise the “program” for at least the first week as soon as we can—thankfully we still have 9 months to go so please be patient! The one thing that is a definite is that Joseph Zbukvic will be here for the opening and will be holding workshops…….
One other really exciting development was the acceptance of our invitation by the Many Hands Art Group from the Ngurratjuta Ntjarra (Many Hands) Art Centre in Alice Springs. The Art Centre specialises in contemporary watercolour landscapes by the descendants of the great Albert Namitjira and the Hermansburg School and we are thrilled that we will have their paintings in this exhibition. The painting on the right is by Elton Wirri and is titled “Petermann Ranges”.
Finally, please don’t forget that Stephanie Boyle is holding a really exciting workshop on Thursday 11th and Friday 12th July—Exploring Abstraction. This is the perfect opportunity to let yourself go and, if you are like me, to find out how to let yourself go!!! This is perfect timing to broaden your painting horizons! Details are on page 4. Happy painting! Sue :)

History of the Watercolour Society of W.A.
by Valerie B. Parker For the last 5 years Valerie Parker has been quietly working on a history of the first 30 years of the Society. Who better to do this than a foundation member who has been there from day one. She has patiently gone through 30 years of Society newsletters and endless photo albums and I believe Jillian Brown gave assistance on some aspects. The end result is absolutely delightful. I felt as though I was holding a treasured family album and I am sure other members of our Watercolour family will enjoy it too. The book will be on display at the June meeting and we will start a list for anyone who would like to purchase a copy.
Valerie realises a project like this is likely to have gaps and holes in it and members are asked to fill any of these gaps if they can for future editions. Especially interesting would be anecdotes from the Society camps over the years and of course there must be many photos out there from before the digital age to add to the story. Contact Valerie if you have stories or photos to add but please make sure they are in a ready to print format. As we approach the Society’s 40th birthday this is a timely and important record. Thankyou Valerie, from us all.

Another success for Cass Gartner who won the
Watercolour section at the Alcoa Pinjarra Rotary
Club Exhibition. (Pictured left). Well done Cass.
Keep it up! What a special painting.
Congratulations! FABRIANO AQUERELLO 2019
We were also delighted to see Pam Eddy’s copy
of the catalogue for the Fabriano Aquellero in Italy
2019 which featured paintings by all exhibiting
artists and were so proud to see that Australia
was represented by 3 Society members (Pam
Eddy, Beni Wright and Jude Scott) and one past
member. (Sue Cross.).

NEW MEMBERS;
Congratulations to our two new members voted in at the April 2019 meeting.
They are: Jessica Vivien and Helena Spencer.
Welcome to the Watercolour Society of W.A!
Please; it would be very helpful if a member other than Penny could photograph and attribute the Show and Tell paintings for the News-letter and email the results to Penny . It doesn’t need to be the same person every meeting. Many thanks to Valerie Parker for co-ordinating the show and tell sessions.
At the WAR WIDOWS GUILD, 15 PLANTATION STREET, MENORA Thursday 11th July and Friday 12th July 2019 10.00am – 4.00pm both days.
Here is your chance to explore the beautiful Watercolour medium in a non-representative style.
We will discuss the difference between an Abstract painting and a semi Abstract painting. You will be encouraged to apply a loose approach to your painting. We will achieve this with big, bold brush strokes and a limited palette.
We will experiment with Watercolour pens, wax crayons, inks and so much more. We are here to have some fun while discovering new and different methods to apply to our Art practice. Let us leave behind that fear of splashing paint around and the fear of a blank, white piece of paper. I am loving pushing the boundaries with Watercolour painting and can’t wait to share my different ideas and techniques.
$120 for the 2 day workshop for WSWA Members $150 for non-members
Please contact me to book - your place will only be secure once you have paid. REMINDER!
Please BYO teacups, leave a gold coin for morning tea, help
with chairs and table set-up and pack up, books and DVDs need
to be packed away too so if everyone gets into the mode we can
work like a well oiled machine……………..
Many hands make light work. Thanks to Marg Dewar for
filling in for Lorraine at the June meeting.
Guest Hour at the May Meeting – Art and Craft World.
As usual Judith Eleuteri from Art and Craft World had some interesting stuff to tempt us with. She demonstrated a fineline applicator for any waterbased medium such as masking fluid. The device had a pin which kept the dispenser from clogging up. It comes in .5 and .8 bottles is rinseable and can be brought in packs of 3 or singly. She also had a Winsor & Newton A5 watercolour pad at a very good discount and some interesting Pelikon colours. As well as these products Judith brought along loads of goodies which our members lapped up. She is always a wealth of information and so helpful it’s always a pleasure to see her or visit her at Art and Craft world in Morley.
Secretary still required for Watercolour Society of W.A.
• Must enjoy sumptuous morning teas.
• Must have a good sense of humour.
• Very handy if you can find your way around a
computer.
• Must recognise that the WSWA is important to
the mental health of it’s members.
• Must love Watercolour and who doesn't?
• Must want to help carry the Society forward into the future and beyond
with the rest of us watercolour tragics.

Show and Tell— Skies This theme seemed very popular with quite a lot of examples on show. Unfortunately the more paintings there are the more I become confused with which member painted which painting. I apologise in advance just in case.
Marion Power showed us 4 stunning examples of moody skies , some are inspired by New Zealand and some by the UK Far left, left and lower left
Above. Two lovely pieces by Valerie Parker. A night scene on the left and a very windy scene on the right.
Left. A terrific and different approach by Debbie Ey.
Above. A little stunner from Pam Eddy of the sky over Cable Beach, Broome.
Above; Two of Lucy Papalia’s paintings in her usual impeccable style.
Above. Lorraine Gardener really captured the glow in her sky.
Above. Red sails in the sunset by Penny Maddison
Right and above right by Robin Hollier. Apparently the charming painting with the cormarants is unfinished but it is certainly looking good.
Robin Hollier spoke on her beautiful book of drawings and paintings, based on her travels around Australia whilst she was going through a difficult personal time and suggested it as a means of giving inspiration to others. As artists we are very lucky to have this type of therapy available to us.
