DESCRIPTION

"Patriotic Sisterhood: Women and the Origins of Historic Preservation"In Making Historic Preservation Relevant for the Next 50 Years, Donovan Rypkema noted that "the American preservation movement.... overwhelmingly owes its existence and success to the efforts of women." This program will showcase historic sites, personalities and heritage initiatives that demonstrate the powerful and visionary role of individual women and patriotic organizations (notably the Colonial Dames and the DAR) in saving some of our most beloved treasures, laying down tracks for the modern preservation movement and instilling in their families, neighbors and generation a respect for the grace and wonder of our native land. The point is to underscore that historic preservation and its allied concerns were a central platform that gave women civic and national influence in the years before they could even vote. The legacy is remarkable and a model of what the heritage enterprise should be and why it matters today.A program by William Hosley, Terra Firma Northeast - for bookings contact [email protected]
