The green meadows around the house are lush and offer the pigs a comfortable living space throughout the year. Our small group of countryside pigs lives outside under open skies all year long. This suits their nature. They like to come close to our house. Personally I enjoy the presence of the pigs, for me they are more than intelligent animals. They are marvellously sensitive and humorous creatures.

The goats are also nice, cows and chickens too. I like them all but the pigs are unique to me. It is a gloomy event when I have to bring a few goats to the butcher. I load them onto the trailer and drive the 15 minutes to the butcher’s slaughterhouse. Fifteen uncomfortable minutes, but when it’s done it’s done.

Bringing pigs to a butcher is unbearable because the animals sense everything, know everything, it seems to me. They are stressed ultra fast, become wild and release stress hormones. They can smell their death from far away. All this transfuses into the meat, its consistency and taste.

Butchering is necessary, I understand that. But the method of the process is crucial: at this point I want to do anything humanly possible so my pigs find a somewhat dignified end.

I have developed my own method: I practice loading the animals into the trailer, because this is a critical moment. I put the trailer in the green meadow and lay out some pieces of food for my piggies. This way they learn to get into the trailer in a playful manner. Later I park the car with the trailer on the lawn. Then I let the motor run. By this point the pigs know that it is normal when a car with a trailer is standing on the grass.

I begin to drive without closing the trailer. It’s all a game. Later I close the vehicle and drive a few turns down the countryside road and back up again. The animals even squeal with fun and everything becomes familiar to them. I drive on a bit further. And further. They need to experience a quarter of an hour.

Die grünen Wiesen rund um das Haus sind üppig und bieten den Schweinen das Jahr über einen angenehmen Lebensraum. Unsere kleine Gruppe Landschweine lebt das ganze Jahr nur draussen, unter freiem Himmel. Das passt zu Ihrer Natur. Sie kommen gerne in die Nähe unseres Wohnhauses. Ich selber mag die Gegenwart der Sauen,

es sind für mich mehr als schlaue Tiere. Es sind fabelhaft sensible und humorvolle Wesen.

Die Ziegen sind auch nett, Kühe und Hühner ebenso. Ich mag sie alle, aber die Schweine sind für mich einzigartig. Es ist ein bedrückendes Ereignis, wenn ich ein paar Geissen in die Metzgerei bringen muss. Ich verlade sie auf den Anhänger und fahre die 15 Minuten zum Schlachtraum des Metzgers. Fünfzehn unangenehme Minuten, aber wenn es vollbracht ist, ist es vorbei.

Schweine in eine Metzgerei zu bringen ist unerträglich, weil die Tiere alles spüren, alles wissen – scheint mir. Sie geraten ultraschnell in Stress, gebären sich wild und schütten Stresshormone aus. Sie riechen ihren Tod von weitem. Das alles überträgt sich ins Fleisch und in dessen Beschaffenheit und Geschmack.

Schlachten muss man ja, dessen bin ich mir bewusst. Aber die Art und Weise des ganzen Prozesses ist ausschlaggebend: Da will ich das Menschenmögliche tun, damit meine lieben Schweine ein einigermassen würdiges Ende finden.

Ich habe eine eigene Methode entwickelt: Ich übe mit den Tieren das Verladen in den Anhänger. Das ist nämlich ein äusserst kritischer Punkt. Ich stelle den Anhänger auf die grüne Wiese und lege meinen Schweinchen ein paar feine Futterstücke parat. Sie lernen so spielend das Einsteigen in den Anhänger. Später stelle ich den Anhänger zusammen mit dem Auto auf die Wiese. Dann lasse ich mal den Motor laufen. An diesem Punkt wissen die Schweine, dass alles normal ist, wenn ein Auto mit einem Anhänger auf der Wiese steht.

Ich beginne zu fahren, ohne den Ladewagen zu schliessen. Alles ist Spiel. Später schliesse ich den Wagen und fahre ein paar Kurven die Landstrasse runter, dann wieder hoch. Die Tiere haben sogar Ihren quietschenden Spass und es wird Ihnen alles vertraut. Ich fahre ein Bisschen weiter. Und noch weiter. Die Viertelstunde müssen sie kennen.
