Throughout my life I have been able to participate in many experiences and opportunities which have shaped me and allowed me to grow as an individual and as a community member. For twelve years I participated in Girl Scouts of America. This program taught me to have appropriate respectful behavior toward every person I meet. Girl Scouts also helped me to become prepared for any situation. In high school I participated in many different extra curricular activities. As the president of my high school class, I learned how to delegate tasks and how to interact with different vendors. When planning prom, graduation, fundraising events, and many other like events I had to interact with many different vendors in order to find the appropriate one for each specific event. As drum major of the Olivet High School Band, I learned to simultaneously direct more than one-hundred of my peers. Through all of these organizations I gained great organizational skills and experienced how to handle any situation with integrity.

In May 2011, I graduated with distinction from the 5.5 years Master of Architecture program at the University of Kansas, School of Architecture, Design & Planning. As an architecture student, I gained exceptional time management skills and multi-tasking skills. The amount of time that is necessary to succeed in the Masters Program taught me determination and dedication. I also gained proficient knowledge and skills in computer programs such as Photoshop, InDesign, Google SketchUp, AutoCAD, Revit, and Ecotect. In addition, as an architecture student I had the privilege to be a charter member, treasurer, and president of Women In Design KU. This student organization was founded with the intent to provide opportunities for students to become familiar with all design fields through interaction with other design students and design professionals. Such exposure has allowed me to gain knowledge and ability to incorporate an understanding of other design fields into my work. As a charter member, treasurer, and president I have also gained the skills to establish a successful organization and the perseverance to continue providing opportunities for my fellow students.

Through my experiences while attending the University of Kansas, I was able to develop a skillful understanding of the various aspects of architecture. Many of the aspects of architecture interest me, but most specifically I am interested in sustainability, community oriented design, and international architectural influences in the United States and abroad. During the Fall 2010, I was able to explore these interests more through working for an architecture firm in Beijing, China. Through this amazing opportunity, I found that these aspects of architecture can be extremely important and influential in every area of design.

I have gained many characteristics from the experiences and opportunities in my life. I can apply every characteristic to all aspects of my life, interact well with people, lead and explain ideas well to people, work well in a team, and multi-task. I also learn and pick up on procedures quickly. Together, these along with the many other qualities I have gained throughout my life experiences and opportunities have shaped me to be the person I am today.

Spring 2011

PROGRAM: Create a pattern language, similar to Christopher Alexander’s, through in-depth research, which provides guides for retrofitting an abandoned city.

SOLUTION: The design of transportation networks should be done through creating levels of priority. Each network should be related to each other rather than designed independently, in order to produce a transportation system that is cohesive. The initial development of the hierarchy should focus on the transportation needs of the urban center, in particular at the level of pedestrian accessibility. This pushes the pedestrian network to the forefront of the system and motorized networks to the rear, allowing people to live their lives in the public eye of the streets, as is a natural desire of humankind.

“Calls for the promotion of a more sustainable urban form - defined simply as an urban pattern that is compact, pedestrian oriented, less autodependent, and not

desegregated into single, functional-use zones - now define the planning agenda.”

- Andres Duany & Emily Talen“Transect Planning”

“The alternative transportation network proposed here is diverse and complex, mixing differing types of auto uses with transit, biking, and walking. It must set up a new hierarchy of arterials and boulevards that allow for through traffic without always bypassing commercial centers - a road network that reinforces access to walkable neighborhoods, urban town centers, and transit without cutting them off

from local pedestrian movement.” - Peter Calthorpe

PROGRAM: Create a pattern language, similar to Christopher Alexander’s, through in-depth research, which provides guides for retrofitting an abandoned city.

SOLUTION: In order to promote encore careers, local schools, community colleges, and community centers should provide opportunities for people in the Third Age to be reeducated. The low costs would aid the people who often cannot afford to retire, but desire to continue working in another job to succeed in reeducation. Studies demonstrate that people within the Third Age desire new careers which will have a positive social impact. As a result, the most important reeducation and training opportunities should be within fields such as teaching, healthcare, and youth counseling.

Urban Life & the Collective Community: Retrofitting Abandoned Detroit

“...baby boomers are eager to make career changes that can launch a new chapter in their working lives while they make social contribution... Getting baby boomers the education and training they need to enter fields such as health care, education and

social services, is one way to address worker shortages in those sectors.”

- N. Susan Emeagwali“Community Colleges Offer Baby Boomers An Encore”

“ For many, working longer will mean not just a few more years on the job, but a whole new stage of work in later life. And for many of them, that stage could be long enough to provide a chance to change their priorities, live their values, fulfill their dreams, or leave their legacy; that is, to establish ‘encore careers’ that combine

financial security with personal meaning and social impact.”

- David Bank“Encore Careers and the Economic Crisis”

Sky Performance Design

PROGRAM: A shopping mall performance space which can be seen from all the levels of the building surrounding the atrium.

SOLUTION: A sculpture transformed into a key performance piece for both visitors in the event space and prepared presentations on the sky performance platform. The base of the sculpture can be transformed into a studio with cameras for visitors to create videos to be shown on the screend or can use the space to sit and rest. The higher up platform is for sky performance. The stage has wrapping seating for viewing the performance, but the performance can be displayed on the screens for viewing all around the atium space.

Page 15: Patricia Shaw Portfolio

PROGRAM: Ceiling design for a boutique area within a shopping mall.

SOLUTION: The ceiling design was formed through the inspiration from spanish markets. Spanish markets provide unique experiences of culture and environment. As people wander through the markets interacting with vendors, they are protected from the sun by a collection of fabric rectangles hung overhead. The fabric patchwork overhead provides a collection of color, light, and shape patterns which add interest and activity to the space.

PROGRAM: A shopping mall kiosk which has multiple uses.

SOLUTION: Kiosks are turned into art galleries through the concept of a book. The kiosks can be folded closed when not in use to become more of an art form rather than an empty stall. Then the stalls can be reopened for use again. The back of the stall is used to create a gallery space which can be used for artwork or other displays.

Troost Avenue Community Recreation Center

Spring 2010

PROGRAM: Develop a center which will promote the benefits of physical exercise to the entire community through its activities and education programs. The center will also work to help the members of the community improve safety, business, community, education, transportation, maintenance, housing, and parks.

SOLUTION: The building acts as a connection link to all of the areas surrounding the site. As the community works together to rejuvenate their part of Kansas City, the center design does its part through sustainable measures such as maximizing daylighting and stormwater recycling through the use of native plants within bioswales and a green roof.

PROGRAM: JFK Commuter Triangle, formally Queensboro Plaza, has long been a place of decay. However, over the past few years the area has begun to be rejuvenated due to renovation of buildings along with the dedication of the city and community to revive the culture of the area. Design a project which addresses the interstitial space created by the infrastructure of the area and will help provide revival.

SOLUTION: The program I designed is a Business & Cultural Center. My design addresses the use of interstitial space while incorporating the city block. The two aspects come together to invite both the structure of business and the creative activity of culture.

PROGRAM: As a studio, design and build a structure which will provide a beginning and an ending to the Rockefeller Prairie Trail.

SOLUTION: The process began with two designs which encompassed different qualities. Through discussion and collaboration the two schemes were combined to create a single structure which was double-sided to host different types of activities. As part of the studio, I helped initiate the two designs and collaborate to the finished product. Along with two other students, I drew all the working drawings. I also oversaw the proper assembly of construction while actively participating in fabrication and building.

PROGRAM: Explore the character properties of concrete. First explore the intentional and unintentional acts which create differentiated surfaces.

SOLUTION: Once the intentional and unintentional acts which create differentiated surfaces were photographed and explored, an action was assigned to each photograph. One descriptive action was then chosen to apply to concrete. The word I applied to concrete was “shine.” The exploration consisted of two phases, applying “shine” to concrete slabs after allowing them to cure and then applying “shine” during the mixing and pouring process.

PROGRAM: Lamborghini is a renown car manufacturer. The cars are known for sleek designs which combine the sharpness of angularity and the sweet smoothness of curvature. The headquarters of Lamborghini should house a museum to showcase the historic cars while also providing a building that represents Lamborghini with sophistication.

SOLUTION: The overall design of Lamborghini’s museum represents the sleekness and sophistication of the combination of angularity and curvature. The building provides a new overall look for Lamborghini that connects all the aspects of the site and company together.

Barcelona is a city which encompasses a culture unlike anything I have ever experienced. The lives of the people is in the streets where they are dedicated to creating experiences full

of expression and passion.

The French cities, no matter the size, exude a sense of stillness and peace. People are working, but still seem as though no effort needs to be put forth. Their lives seem serene.

London is definitely a place of royalty. The city is structured and full of history, while also providing extreme evidence of technology and advancements. Even the surrounding cities have successfully reconciled the integration of new and old without conceding the importance

of either.

Dublin has a unique character. The city seems as if it is almost stuck in time. People are constantly surrounded by historical buildings and places, but they are not well preserved nor are they full of life. The citizens, however, are

full of character.

Beijing is a city which demonstrates the successful integration of modern architecture with historic architecture and tradition. The culture of Beijing is very similar to that of the architecture. Although the modern younger generations can be witnessed through the technology raging about the city, the historic traditions of intertwining generations can be

witnessed everywhere.

American society could learn something from the society of China. Every morning people of every age go to parks to interact and connect with each other while exercising. To wind down every night people gather in plazas to dance, write poetry, and develop community. A better community connection, provides a better and

safer society.

Seoul is an amazing city which exudes the history, culture, and generosity of the people. There are still indicators of war and conflict throughout the city, such as the gas masks in the subways, yet, lives in unremarkable peace.
