The Baxter Quality Improvement Award

• This year’s poster challenge will be sponsored by Baxter. The Baxter Quality Improvement Award will be awarded to outstanding work in the following three categories (approved/requested by Baxter):

• Best Overall Quality Improvement Initiative

• Best Quality Improvement Initiative for building a Culture of Safety

• Best Quality Improvement Initiative towards Safe Medication Practices

A total of $3,000 awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place

• Providing  recognition to nurses, professional practice staff and physicians whose quality improvement work is linked to the following strategic directions:– Promote excellence in quality care by

embracing the principles of unwavering commitment to patient inspired care at Osler.

– Have made an impactful significant change within the hospital or program by delivering exemplary care through patient safety focused quality improvement initiatives

Where to Start?

• Collaborate with your healthcare team and leadership to identify suitable projects for submission

• Identify key lead(s) to organize the poster contents

• Collect your data and information

• Design your poster—be creative!

• Submit your poster name to Patricia (Trish) Geerlinks

Keep in mind…

• You need to present a project that demonstrates improvement

• You need to have measured your quality initiative in order to know it demonstrates an improvement

• Back up your topic with literature/research

• Keep your presentation interesting for the reader—you only have 3-5 minutes to get your point across!

Keep in mind…

• You will be judged on content for sure but also format and presentation so versus saying what was done…show it

• Use pictures and graphics more than wordy sentences on slides

• Format is top to bottom, left to right (see sample slide)

• The template is a guide and you are not restricted to it

• Most of all….have fun!!

Suggestions for Formatting: guide for font colours

Formatting Tips Backgrounds should be complementary

Avoid red/green-colour blindness is common

Red Green

Unify poster- selecting one background colour

Purple suggest rank- do not use with black or grey

Yellow and red is a stimulating combination

Use complementary colour as an accent

Orange with blue or Blue with yellow are complementary

Blue and green are calming and a popular choice

Lighter shades create emphasis on dark backgrounds- Bleu/white or grey /black

White is stark but a high contrast to dark colours and black

Black is dramatic and a good background to bright colours

Suggestions for presenting your poster

• Don’t stand in front of your poster

• Be prepared to give a 1-2 minute overview

• Be prepared to answer questions

• The poster should speak for itself so you are only filling in verbal details
