Una specialises in the area of prosthodontics and implant dentistry. She received first class honours in her final postgraduate examinations and has also been awarded the prestigious fellowship of the faculty of dentistry in Ireland. Over her career in dentistry, she has received numerous awards including Public Dental Health project prize, Irish Dental Council Audit Prize, the Moloney Award and Dean’s Prize. She stays at the cutting edge of her field by regularly attending both national and international conferences. She is an invited peer reviewer for the Journal of the Irish Dental Association. She maintains a part time position as clinical tutor of undergraduate dental students in the Dublin Dental Hospital. She represents the Irish Dental Association on the Irish Committee for Specialist Training in Dentistry.

Prof Brian O’Connell received his undergraduate degree in dentistry at the [http://www.ucc.ie/en/] National University of Ireland, Cork and postgraduate training in Prosthodontics and Biochemistry at the [http://www.urmc.rochester.edu/dentistry/] Eastman Institute of Oral Health, University of Rochester, New York. He continued his work as a Principal Investigator at the [http://www.nih.gov/] National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Brian is currently Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Director of Postgraduate Prosthodontics at [http://web1.dental.tcd.ie/] Trinity College, Dublin, with a clinical emphasis on multidisciplinary care. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Brian has published and lectured widely on Prosthodontics and Implantology.
What is prosthodontics?Prosthodontics is the dental specialty concerned with the rehabilitation and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with missing or deficient teeth.
Who is a prosthodontist?A prosthodontist is a dentist who undertakes an additional three years of specialist training after completing dental school. Extensive training and experience provide prosthodontists with a special understanding of the dynamics of a smile, the preservation of a healthy mouth and the provision of replacement teeth. As the architect of a dental treatment plan, a prosthodontist collaborates with general dentists, specialists and other health professionals to develop solutions to dental concerns. Prosthodontists are highly trained in state of the art techniques and procedures for treating many diverse and complex dental conditions and restoring optimum function and aesthetics. These include veneers, crowns, bridges, complete and removable partial dentures, dental implants and traumatic dental injuries as well as coordinating and planning of a full mouth reconstruction.
Who needs to attend a prosthodontist?You may wish to visit a prosthodontist if you are missing one or more teeth, you are unhappy with existing crowns, you are interested in dental implants, you wear dentures or removable partial dentures or you want to improve your smile.
What is treatment like?A full consultation will be carried out at your initial visit. A course of treatment specifically tailored to your needs will be thoroughly explained to you and any questions you may have will be answered. Any recommendations are communicated through individual discussion, followed by a written report with a detailed quotation.
Following your consultation, we will schedule follow up appointments to suit your schedule. You will receive comprehensive information regarding your treatment and what to expect. We will maintain strong communication with your general dentist throughout your course of specialised treatment.
How much does it cost?
We strive to provide all of our treatments at competitive prices. Prosthodontic treatment qualifies for 20% tax relief, which can be claimed with a Med 2 form. We will complete the necessary paperwork for you.
How long will it take?This depends on the extent of your initial problem and your individual requirements. Typical cases last from 3 months to 1 year although more complex cases can take up to 2-3 years to complete. Temporary replacements for missing teeth are provided at all stages of treatment.
Is treatment painful?No, once the tooth and surrounding area has been numbed using local anaesthetic you will not feel any pain. All procedures are carried out under local anaesthetic (similar to getting a filling) or conscious sedation. There may be some discomfort following certain procedures which you will be advised how to manage.
