PATH – free curricular materials for undergraduate chemical engineeringPATH is an initiative to help improve the skills and knowledge with respect to process modelling in chemical engineering satisfying the needs from industry and academia. PATH material comes free with teaching licenses.
PATH helps in several ways:• Developing course material under the guidance of the PSE Academic Advisory Board• How-to videos• Guest lectures• Technical Webinar Series
Hands-on Sessions & Home Assignments
Background on PATH• PATH is aimed at undergraduate chemical engineering classes
that could benefit from modelling such as reaction engineering, separations engineering, etc.
• Material is software agnostic and modular.• All modules contain:
• Hands-on Session• Home Assignment• Slides
• Home assignments have fun exercises that engage critical thinking skills rather than button pressing.
Current Modules: • Lumped modelling (3 modules):
Into to modelling, Multicomponent modelling, Generic Modelling
• Distributed Modelling (2 modules): Distributed modelling basics, Numerics
• Energy Balance• Momentum Balance• Flowsheeting basics
In the pipeline:• Basic control (1 module)• Debugging (1 module• Physical properties (1
module)• Formulated Products
Key modules available or in productionMost PATH material is supplied under an Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike license. This means that:
• licensees can use or alter the material as desired • the material is ‘self-evolving’ and continually improving
**Under CC-BY-NC-SA:Slides for coursesHome assignments
Under PSE Academic license Hands-on exercises for computer labsHow-to videos (accessible through PSE website)
Creative Commons licensing for materials
• Slides are made available in PowerPoint• Fundamental modelling concepts explained through simple
examples• Modular format allows the slides to be used standalone or as part
of other courses
Examples of Slides
*Simulation is used heavily in some careers."The undergraduate and graduate degree I obtained offered no
preparation in simulation…In summary, nobody used it and we were unprepared for industry where everyone uses some type of simulation software." - Junior industrial
Expectations conflict strongly in process control."An even bigger need is dynamics. New graduates need
an ability to jump between scales, from the molecular to the continuum, from lab to pilot to process, and to manage product scale-up, steady state and the dynamics." -Industrial
Well documented need for modelling curriculum
