We have also discussed some of the points made by Pope Benedict in his book Jesus of Nazareth: the Infancy Narratives. I'd like to share some of his insights with you as I have found them to be very helpful in deepening my understanding of these very familiar stories. Pope Benedict begins by putting the stories of the annunciation and of Jesus' birth within the context of how Jesus is presented in the Gospels. Jesus is a paradox. Everyone knew exactly where he came from but there was a mystery about him associated with his claims to a divine mission. At Nazareth, where he had been brought up, people who knew him and his family were shocked when he applied the prophecies of Isaiah to himself (Lk 4:16-30)-so shocked that they wanted to kill him. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke are our main sources of knowledge about Jesus' early life. According to Pope Benedict, the sources of these stories are most likely family traditions that were made public when Mary was no longer alive (" his mother kept all these things in her heart" Lk 2:19; 1:29). These traditions were preserved by the early Christian community and placed within a theological framework designed to answer two key questions about Jesus-Who is he? Where is he from? The way in which the Gospels answer these questions about Jesus' identity, tell us a lot about ourselves as well. As his followers and disciples, we share in who he is for us and our world. The gospel writers spoke about Jesus by constantly referring to the writings of the prophets, especially the prophet Isaiah. They also wrote about him by referring to particular individuals and incidents in Israel's history, especially the roles of Moses and David. Even though Isaiah lived many hundreds of years before Jesus was born, his writings contained references that only 'made sense' when they were applied to Jesus life. "What Matthew and Luke set out to do, each in his own way, was not to tell 'stories' but to write history, real history that had actually happened..(but)..interpreted and understood in the context of the word of God…..what seemed important for the faith community in the light of the word" (p17 Jesus of Nazareth: the Infancy Narratives) Deacon Louis St Joseph Enfield Healing Mass Friday 6th December 2019 Celebrant: Father George Sigamony Rosary: 7:00pm Reconciliation: 7:00-8:00pm Prayer and Praise: 7:30pm Mass: 8:00pm Exposition (after Mass) & Prayer Ministry FEASTS//SAINTS of the WEEK (2 - 7 Dec 2019) Mon 9/12 The Immaculate Cocneption Friday 13/12 St. Lucy Martyr Saturday 14/12 St. John of the Cross A message from the Archdiocese of Sydney Abuse is a crime.
