So w e are a "body" of S p i r i t - b e g o t t e n people--we a re a " b u i l d i n g " and w e are a " h o l y t e m p l e . " And a l l t h a t one body i s " . . . f i t l y j o i n e d t o g e t h e r and compacted (welded) by t h a t which e v e r y j o i n t s u p p l i e t h . . . (Eph. 4:16).

I can r e c a l l i n t h e e a r l y 7 0 s some of t h e changes i n t h e sermons w e began t o receive from t h o s e who came from H e a d q u a r t e r s on t h e Holy Days ( a c t u a l l y , High Days! ) w e r e n e a r l y u n d e t e c t a b l e e x c e p t f o r t h e " a p p e a l " t o o u r human desire f o r " r e l i e f " f rom t h e m i n i s t e r i a l " o p p r e s s i o n " so many of u s w e r e t o l d w e had e x p e r i e n c e d o v e r t h e y e a r s ! Maybe t h e r e were some e x t e n u a t i n g c i r c u m s t a n c e s i n which t h i s may have been t r u e . But y e t , t h e k i n d o f sermons w e r e c e i v e d d u r i n g t h o s e y e a r s of " o p p r e s s i o n " w e r e t h e k i n d which made us go home and d i g i n t o o u r B i b l e s and s e a r c h d i l i g e n t l y f o r g r e a t e r u n d e r s t a n d i n g o f t h e Way o f t h e L i v i n g God! The l anguage S a t a n i n s p i r e d t o be used d u r i n g t h o s e l a t e r y e a r s w a s so s l i c k and subtle t h a t w e v i r t u a l l y s a w t h i s "new" way o f t h i n k i n g as b e i n g a p r o c e s s o f m a t u r a t i o n i n t h e Church , and m o s t o f u s f e l l f o r i t . B u t , government i s composed o f men and government h a s been d e s i g n e d by men. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , t h e r e are e v i l men. The A t t o r n e y G e n e r a l and t h o s e i n h i s camp are men who w i l l l i e and i n v e n t where n e c e s s a r y , and w i l l ma l ign even where n o t n e c e s s a r y .

U n f o r t u n a t e l y t h e American p e o p l e do n o t t r a d i t i o n a l l y l i k e t o keep much of t h e p a s t i n t h e i r h e a d s b e c a u s e A m e r i c a i s a p l a c e where it i s con- s i d e r e d u n h e a l t h y t o remember p a s t m i s t a k e s - - n e u r o t i c t o t h i n k a b o u t them and p s y c h o t i c t o d w e l l upon them. Y e t o n l y a few y e a r s ago t h e r e w a s a P r e s i d e n t i a l s c a n d a l uncovered i n a c o r r u p t White House--the W a t e r g a t e Scandal - -a s c a n d a l whose t r u e p r o p o r t i o n s w i l l n e v e r b e c o m p l e t e l y d i s - cove red o r known b e c a u s e of P r e s i d e n t F o r d ' s pa rdon of h i s p r e d e c e s s o r . A s c a n d a l where in t h e P r e s i d e n t and h i s men w e r e w i l l i n g t o u s e a l l t h e i r c o n s i d e r a b l e power t o s u b v e r t t h e n a t i o n and d e s t r o y i t s two-hundred-year h e r i t a g e f o r t h e i r own c o r r u p t and s e l f i s h p u r p o s e s .

Today i t seems t o b e s a f e f o r p o l i t i c i a n s t o a t t a c k ' ' c u l t s " o r o t h e r o r g a n i z a t i o n s t h a t a p p e a r t o b e on t h e " f r i n g e " o f what s o c i e t y deems t o be t h e e s t a b l i s h e d norms. Even l i b e r a l s who have de fended o t h e r s unde r t h e same and s i m i l a r c i r c u m s t a n c e s i n t h e p a s t a r e now s l o w t o r e a l i z e what l u r k s b e h i n d t h e a t t a c k on " r e l i g i o u s c u l t s " and m i n o r i t y r e l i g i o u s o r g a n i z a t i o n s .

O f c o u r s e , it i s always necessa ry f o r a p o l i t i c i a n on " t h e make" t o have a theme and t h e Attorney General i s s t r i c t l y a s loganee r . " U s e a gun, go t o j a i l , " b rought him t o t h e O f f i c e of Attorney General from t h e bowels of t h e S t a t e Assembly. Now an a t t a c k on " c u l t s " appears t o him t o be a p l a i n , s imp le , unadorned theme--perfect t o confuse t h e i g n o r a n t , s u f f i - c i e n t t o even confuse t h e c o u r t s and t h e u s u a l l y well-informed.

I t would n o t be t h e f i r s t t i m e i n o u r h i s t o r y , l e s t w e f o r g e t , t h a t t h e confus ions of hones t people a r e p icked up by a f e w bad and d i s h o n e s t people and o r c h e s t r a t e d i n t o an opera of p u b l i c d i s o r d e r , s t a g e d and sung as though by inmates i n an in sane asylum.

W e are i n t h e vanguard of a l l t h o s e who a r e f i g h t i n g f o r p o l i t i c a l 4 r e l i g i o u s freedom because they a r e one and t h e same t h i n g . The F i r s t Amendment t o t h e C o n s t i t u t i o n i s a l so a gua ran tee of p o l i t i c a l freedom-- n o t s imply t h e gua ran tee t o e x e r c i s e o n e ' s r e l i g i o u s b e l i e f s i n a church , o r a temple, o r i n t h e p r i v a c y of o n e ' s home o r mind.

To have r e l i g i o u s freedom means t o have t h e r i g h t t o a c t upon o n e ' s r e l i g i o u s b e l i e f s o r t o r e f r a i n from a c t i n g i n accordance w i t h o n e ' s r e l i g i o u s b e l i e f s . T o have r e l i g i o u s freedom means t o be a b l e t o ac t o r r e f r a i n from a c t i n g , n o t j u s t as an i n d i v i d u a l , b u t as p a r t of a group, o r p a r t of an a s s o c i a t i o n , o r a s p i r i t u a l body, o r a body p o l i t i c .

W e a r e i n e s sence a body p o l i t i c . Our members are p a r t of t h i s body p o l i t i c , b u t n o t i n o p p o s i t i o n t o t h e S t a t e o r t o t h e Federal Government. Nonethe less , w e are n o t i n consonance wi th i t on m a t t e r s of fundamental importance because w e b e l i e v e t h a t w e are n o t "of t h i s w o r l d , " f o r w e are t o l d n o t t o b e by t h e B i b l e . W e a r e t o l d t o obey God's laws and f o r t h a t obedience w e a r e promised H i s b l e s s i n g .

W e do n o t b e l i e v e t h a t t h e P r e s i d e n t , t h e S e n a t e , t h e House of Represen- t a t i v e s , t h e Governor, o r even t h e At torney Genera l of t h e S t a t e of C a l i f o r n i a can cu re t h i s w o r l d ' s i l l s , nor do w e b e l i e v e t h i s w o r l d ' s i l l s w i l l be cured by man, or any combination of men, now l i v i n g o r y e t t o be born. Ra the r , w e know t h a t t h i s government w i l l s u r e l y f a i l a s have a l l governments which have been des igned by men, and which t h e L iv ing God has p e r m i t t e d man t o des ign f o r s i x thousand years - - the s i x thousand y e a r s du r ing which man has been c u t of f f r o m God ( e x c e p t f o r t h o s e few who have been drawn t o H i m because t h e F a t h e r has c a l l e d them).

W e know t h a t t h e only s a l v a t i o n f o r a l l mankind i s C h r i s t ' s i n t e r v e n t i o n . H e w i l l come aga in du r ing t h i s end t i m e t o r u l e i n t h e Kingdom of God under t h e government of God--under t h e laws of God.

W e know t h a t when C h r i s t comes and ushe r s i n t h e World Tomorrow, w e who have been c a l l e d w i l l r u l e under H i m . And t h o s e who have n o t heeded t h e announcement a s promulgated by Herber t W. Armstrong w i l l n o t .

Hence w e are be ing p e r s e c u t e d and maligned, and o u r l e a d e r ' s w i l l more than l i k e l y be p rosecu ted and condemned. A s t hey k i l l e d C h r i s t , as they k i l l e d t h e Apos t l e s , a s t hey k i l l e d a l l t h o s e who had b e l i e v e d i n what H e s a i d , so they w i l l s eek t o k i l l ou r l e a d e r s !

They v i e w t h e Church members and t h e p u b l i c as any o t h e r consumer of a commercial p r o d u c t . Then c e r t a i n men i n government a d o p t t h e r o l e , t h r o u g h p o l i t i c a l a m b i t i o n , p a r a n o i a o r w h a t e v e r , a s t h e p r o t e c t o r of t h i s " r e l i g i o u s consuming" p u b l i c . These men would t h e n t a k e upon themse lves t o d e t e r m i n e what t h e y s u b j e c t i v e l y i n t h e i r mind c o n s i d e r t o be " r e l i g i o u s wrong. I ' T h i s " r e l i g i o u s wrong" t h e y labe l o r t r a n s l a t e i n t o t h e l e g a l word " f r a u d , "

What i s t h i s " f r a u d " ? I t h a s no set meaning. What i t encompasses i s o n l y l i m i t e d by t h e i n g e n u i t y and p r e j u d i c e of t h e p a r t i c u l a r o p p r e s s i v e - b e n t government o f f i c i a l t h a t might b e w i e l d i n g t h e power of t h e s t a t e a t t h a t t i m e .
