Jubilee Year of MercyMay 8, 2016The Ascension of the Lord
As the liturgical year—and this Jubilee Year of Mercy—unfold, we reflect on what Jesus’ ascension meant for the first dis-ciples and means now for us. Stay in Jerusalem, Jesus had instructed, awaiting “the promise of the Father. In a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:4–5, 8). Despite Jesus’ absence, they wait “with great joy... continually in the temple prais-ing God” (Luke 24:52–53). But as we join them, waiting and worshiping, the enduring challenge—theirs and ours—is delivered by “two men in white” (Acts 1:10). In every age, disciples must stop looking at the sky, head down the mountain, and go back into the world, “commissioned,” says Pope Francis, “to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel,” inviting everyone to find “in our parishes, communities, associations and move-ments wherever there are Christians... an oasis of mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 12).

Al ir transcurriendo este Año Litúrgico —y este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia—, reflexionamos en lo que
significó para los primeros discípulos y lo que ahora significa para nosotros. Quédense en Jerusalén, lo ordenó Jesús, a que “esperaran la promesa del Padre, ustedes serán bautiza-dos con el Espíritu Santo dentro de pocos días, cuando el Espíritu Santo venga sobre ustedes; serán mis testigos en Jerusalén, en toda Judea y Samaria, y hasta los confines de la tierra” (Hechos 1:4–5,8). Pese a la ausen-cia física de Jesús, ellos esperan “con gran alegría orando continuamente en el Templo” (Lucas 24:52–53). Pero nosotros al unirnos a ellos, esperando y orando, enfrentamos los desafíos —los suyos y los nuestros— que nos
dan “dos hombres vestidos en blanco” (Hechos 1:10). “God’s Love In Nature Concert”The St. Helen Concert Series will present “God’s Love in Nature” on Sunday, May 15 at 3:30 pm in the church, featuring St. Helen’s 9:00 Mass pianist Khanh Pham and three of her Baylor graduate music colleagues: Naomi Bate, violin; Brady Meyer, cello, and Anne-Marie Houy, flute. On the program will be Sonata for Violin and Piano (Mau-rice Ravel), Sunswept (Adrienne Albert), 3 Preludes (Claude De-bussy), Silent Woods (Antonin Dvôrák), Selections from Carnival of the Animals (Camille Saint-Saëns) and Vox Balanae (George Crumb). These beautiful pieces each reflect upon the beauty of nature and God’s loving voice therein. Bingo Report (05/01/16) - A wonderful crowd of 107 players en-joyed our bingo games last Sunday and they took home $2,084.00 in prizes won. The bingo games netted a terrific profit of $1,283.55 and our concessions took in $314.05 for a total income of $1,597.60. A big thank you to the following KC’s who operated the bingo games: Mike Diers Sr., Bill Esker, Al Garza, Leonard Vigil, John Hibbs, Tom Owan, Marcel Gamboa and Eric Martinez. We also thank our super concession crew consisting of: Joe Medina, Raul Rivera, George Aleman, Cesar Galvez, Michael Aguilar, and David Maldonado. A special thank you goes out to Joe Medina, Sandra Maldonado and Eric Martinez for providing the delicious desserts for our players to enjoy. Of course, we are always grateful for the patronage and support from our regular players and parishioners. There will be no bingo next week due to the Mother’s Day Holiday. We will return on May 15th when the jackpot number will be 58 numbers. We look forward to seeing you on Sundays at 2:00 PM in the Father Joseph Deane Hall.
