A REFLECTION "For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." MAITHEW 5:20 The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear it's the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday' and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner on the parking rot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

Dear friends,

Father Tuck Grinnell

2017 BISHOP'S APPEAL BEGINS!

This month many of us will receive a mailing from Bishop Burbidge regarding the 2017 Bishop's Lenten Appeal (BLA). The theme for the 2017 BLA is "Offering hands to serve and hearts to love." After reflecting upon the many blessings that God has given you, please prayerfully consider making a pledge of support to this important appeal that funds many programs and ministries that serve the people in our diocese. Every pledge is an expression of God's love and mercy!

BISHOP BURBIDGE VOICES SOLIDARITY WITH REFUGEES

In his statement on the Executive Order halting refugee admissions, Bishop Joe Vasquez, Chair of the Committee of Migration and Bishop of the Diocese of Austin, highlighted our nation's long and proud tradition of welcoming newcomers and refugees in a humane manner, even as we have pursued a strong vetting system to ensure our safety and security. Together with Bishop Vasquez and my brother bishops, I encourage Catholics to contact our elected officials to make our voices heard- our communities have been and will continue to be hospitable to refugees, in keeping with our legacy of welcoming the stranger. Together, we also pray for comprehensive immigration reform and for peace, safety and harmony within our nation and throughout the world. Show your support today for immigrants and refugees through this action alert. from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

MESSAGE FROM BISHOP BURBIDGE ON THE WORLD DAY OF THE SICK (FEB. 11. 2017)

On this World Day of the Sick, we are especially mindful of those who are suffering and in need of our prayers. We also thank God for their faithful witness as they are united to Christ on the cross. As Pope Francis reminds us, the sick "have a gift of their own to share" and merit our renewed gratitude, respect, and tender attentiveness. God's healing is a free and pure gift, available to each of us. May we recommit to daily prayer for the needs of the infirm and those who care for them confident that the Lord's healing and miraculous love, always at work within us, will sustain them. Rooted in deep faith, may we be witnesses to this year's theme for the World Day of the Sick and, like Mary reflect "amazement at what God has accomplished" and say: "The Almighty has done great things for me" (Lk 1 :49).
