PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Golf matters to me in so many ways. I have been a proud member of Elmhurst for over 40 years starting as a junior when my Dad introduced me to the game. The game resonates in both my personal life and throughout my professional business endeavours. It truly is a sport for a life time. It is a fun social activity that challenges individuals no matter what your level of play. It instills values in our children and provides families and friends a way to be together. In my opinion it is the greatest game. I have been honoured to serve as President of Golf Manitoba the past two years and I am pleased to report on our activities for the past year. Golf Manitoba, the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Manitoba and the Manitoba Golf Superintendents Association jointly operate the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum. The Hall now has 53 honoured members with the 2013 members being inducted at a ceremony held at McPhillips Station Casino on September 30. The 2013 inductees were Charles E. Harvey, Mike Pidlaski, Ray Savard and Donna Thompson (nee Patton). Since its inception, Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum has received tremendous support from Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries. That support is greatly appreciated. All our Member Clubs are reminded that they and their members are the source for nominations to the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum. Nomination forms can be found on the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame website. Golf Manitoba administers the Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund Inc., a registered charity with the objective of providing financial assistance to young golfers pursuing post-secondary education in Canada. The 2013 recipients were Bryce Barr, Erik Christianson, David Nelson and Lucas Wazney (Elmhurst) who received the Dr. Daya Gupta Scholarship for the highest academic standing. A new scholarship this year is the Dr Dwight Parkinson Award given to a student graduating from high school and entering their first year of post-secondary studies. The first recipient of that award was Stefanie Lasuik. Congratulations to all the recipients. The Scholarship Fund has $155 000 in assets from which it provides scholarships, from its investment income, to deserving applicants. Many member clubs support the Scholarship Fund by making annual donations and I would ask individual members to consider making personal donations to the Fund. The National Golf in Schools (NGIS) program, which introduces golf to kids in elementary and high schools, has had tremendous growth with 112 elementary and 7 high schools in Manitoba registered for the program. This is the first year for the high school component of the program. Golf Manitoba grass roots development programs, the CN Future Links and NGIS clinics, had 5277 children participate in 2013 Golf Manitoba encourages and challenges our member clubs to adopt a local school and provide that school with a NGIS kit, an investment of $475 for an elementary school and $595 for a high school to help grow the game in Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. This is where your future club members are coming from. Congratulations to our 2013 Provincial Champions and Inter-provincial Team Members who are recognized in this Annual Report. Our Men’s Inter-provincial team of Derek East, Aaron Cockerill and Charlie Boyechko placed 3rd in the Willingdon Cup competition. Manitoba will be hosting the 2014 Canadian Men’s Amateur and Willingdon Cup next August. The event will be played at Elmhurst with Southwood as the second course. Manitoba has won the Willingdon Cup twice before on home turf in 1974 at Niakwa and 1996 at Glendale. With our great crop of competitive players we are looking forward to great results next year. Our financial results improved during fiscal 2013, however we are projecting poorer operating results in fiscal 2014. Our membership numbers have declined approximately 8% in the current year. This trend is common in other Provinces but our decrease is more significant than others. Part of the reason for this decrease was the

Page 8: PAST PRESIDENTS - Amazon S3s3.amazonaws.com/golfcanada/app/uploads/manitoba/2017/08/021… · 1988 - 90 Mrs. Phyllis Bell 1986 - 88 Mrs. Lorraine MacLeod 1984 - 86 Mrs. Ethel Calnek

very late start to the golf season this year. That certainly does not explain the full decrease. The Board and staff of Golf Manitoba will be working to ensure the game continues to grow in our Province. People are playing just not as members of clubs or public player members. We must better communicate the benefits and value of being a Golf Manitoba member. Our member clubs have been informed in a joint letter from Golf Manitoba and Golf Canada of the 2014 dues as follows:

Golf Canada/Golf Manitoba annual adult membership fee for 2014: $26.00 ($13.00 Golf Manitoba, $13.00 Golf Canada)

Golf Canada/Golf Manitoba annual junior membership fee for 2014: $19.50

($11.00 Golf Manitoba, $8.50 Golf Canada)

The Golf Canada portion of the dues has increased $1.00 from 2013 and the Golf Manitoba portion remains the same. Membership dues allow Golf Manitoba and Golf Canada to provide the programs and services needed to grow the game in our province for the benefit of all golfers. They help support such things as:

Golf in Schools

CN Future Links

Regional, provincial, university and national teams

Golf Fore the Cure presented by Subaru

Regional, provincial competitions

Rules and handicap seminars

Course rating

Coaching, training and certification

Government advocacy and awareness Golf Manitoba would not be able to put on the programs and tournaments that we do without our dedicated volunteers who faithfully give their time and effort. The late Joyce Collier received the Distinguished Service Award at last year’s Awards Dinner held at Glendale Golf and Country Club. Thanks to all our volunteers for your help and congratulations to those receiving long service awards. I would like to extend my thanks to the Golf Manitoba Board members for their hard work and dedication this past year. Special thanks to our Committee Chairs and committee members for your efforts and council to ensure the smooth running of our organization. The committee reports are included in this annual report. Please refer to them for details of their activities. I want to express my appreciation to the Golf Manitoba staff, including Dave Comaskey, John Lamarche, Garth Goodbrandson, Lisa Andersen, Carol Muzychka, Gord Hudson and the summer interns for their work and assistance this past year. Respectfully Submitted, Rob MacDonald President

COURSE RATING & HANDICAP COMMITTEE REPORT The course rating committee had another busy year. To maintain valid course and slope ratings, golf courses are required to be re–rated at least every 10 years or when significant changes are made. A total of 41 course ratings were completed in 2013. These included 24 re-ratings, 12 for additional tees and changes, and 2 ratings for a new course. Women’s ratings included Anderson’s Homestead (Dryden), Dauphin, Elmhurst, Emerald Green (Thunder Bay), Glendale, Kenora, Kildonan Park, Kingswood, La Verendrye, Lake of the Sandhills, Maplewood, Minnedosa, Niakwa, Oak Island, Players Course, Rossmere, Sioux Lookout, Transcona, Wildwood, Winkler and Wheat City. Men’s ratings included Anderson’s Homestead, Dauphin, Elmhurst, Glendale, Kenora, Kildonan Park, Kingswood, La Verendrye, Lake of the Sandhills, Maplewood, Minnedosa, Niakwa, Oak Island, Players Course, Rossmere, Sioux Lookout, Transcona, Wildwood, Winkler and Wheat City. Golf Manitoba continues to conduct Handicap Education Seminars for representatives from our member clubs. In 2013 seminars were held at The St Boniface Golf Club in May and at the Whitewater Golf Club in Thunder Bay in June. The license agreement with the USGA requires that each club have at least one representative certified. These representatives will then be used as a resource for inquiries at the club level. If your club has not sent an individual, please do so and if you have already sent someone, we would encourage you to send others to be educated on the details of the handicap system. We would also encourage clubs to organize seminars specifically for your members and Golf Manitoba will come to your club to assist. Thank you to all our volunteers for their efforts throughout the year. Looking forward to another busy summer for all our men’s and women’s rating teams next year as well as continuing to educate Manitoba and North West Ontario golfers on the parameters of the handicap system. Respectfully Submitted, Brian Gilhuly Course Rating & Handicap Committee Chair

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT On behalf of Golf Manitoba, I am pleased to provide an update regarding the 2013 Marketing and Communications activities. As the Provincial Sport Organization and governing body for amateur golf in Manitoba and Northwest Ontario, Golf Manitoba has developed a communication plan to achieve organizational priorities as identified by our Board of Directors. The objectives of the Communication Plan are to:

1. Create a comprehensive communication plan to help guide all communications on behalf of Golf Manitoba,

2. Establish a consistent organizational voice with which to communicate with our stakeholders,

3. Identify Golf Manitoba’s core messages and ensure that these core messages are reflected in all

organizational communications,

4. Create consistent formatting and messaging for all informational, functional, promotional, commercial and emotional based communications, and;

5. Establish an effective tactical schedule for all Golf Manitoba communications initiatives.

Within the development of our Communication Plan, we have identified our diverse audience groups. By doing so, we are able to ensure that our communications strategies are ideally targeted to ensure maximum effectiveness. Audience groups identified to date include:

1. Golfers - includes members and non-members, competitive players and golf enthusiasts. 2. Golf Facilities - includes member clubs, non-member clubs, short courses and driving ranges. 3. Golf Industry - includes Provincial and NAGA partners, PGA of Canada Professionals and equipment

manufacturers and distributors. 4. Corporate Supporters - includes commercial and philanthropic partners. 5. Government - Sport Manitoba, City of Winnipeg and Province of Manitoba 5. Media - traditional golf media, non-golf and non-sport media and social media. 6. Volunteers - Current volunteer base, prospective volunteers. 7. Community - Non-golfers, prospective golfers, business leaders, parenting groups and schools.

It is important to note that this plan is in concert with Golf Canada’s national communication plan. From a communications perspective, we have continued to diversify our communication tools over the past year with regular media releases, our contact database, the monthly newsletter, Blue Golf messaging as well as becoming more engaged into the social media age by providing timely updates on Twitter and Facebook. We would like to recognize the support shown by corporate leaders and supporters of amateur golf in Manitoba and North West Ontario such as Nott Autocorp, Titleist Canada & Foot Joy, The Golf Dome, as well as Sport Manitoba and Golf Canada.

We certainly recognize that the responsibility of servicing our existing sponsors and securing new sponsors continues to be paramount to enhanced financial viability. As we continue to move forward, we will investigate all options to enhance our ability to increase our off-course revenue stream. We will continue to look for opportunities to work with Golf Canada regarding potential opportunities for the involvement of national sponsors at the local level. In closing, thank you to Dave Comaskey and our professional staff for making things happen. Respectfully Submitted, Kevin O’Donovan Marketing & Communications Committee Chair

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT The 2013 golf year is coming to a close and hopefully it was a good year for everyone on the course. I know we had a very late start to the season at most courses, but hopefully you all got out and had a great year Membership for 2013 in Golf Manitoba has approximately 12,000 members with approximately 100 clubs. These membership numbers are a decrease of about 1400 members from 2012. Our continued focus in 2013 is to promote the advantages of membership to all member and non-member clubs. Golf Manitoba Executive Director Dave Comaskey and Blair Armitage, Golf Canada’s Regional Director of Membership Development in Western Canada, visited many clubs this spring to discuss membership and the benefits of belonging to Golf Manitoba and Golf Canada. Visiting member clubs and non-member clubs is important in getting the word out about the value of being a member. It is our goal in the upcoming year to enhance the communication of benefits of being a Golf Manitoba member. We want all members and non-members to know all the benefits in being a member of Golf Manitoba and Golf Canada. We are also going to try and get the Club Representatives (male and female) more involved in what we do, so they can keep their clubs more informed. In 2013 the dues were increased by $4.00 ($2.00 to Golf Manitoba and $2.00 to Golf Canada) to meet the increasing costs and maintain the programming of Golf Canada and Golf Manitoba. This is the first time in the past couple of years dues were increased. Membership provides members with a number of programs and services including:

1. Course and Slope Rating Courses are rated on a 10 year cycle with new courses rated every three years until they are 10 years old.

2. Handicap Factor

The course and slope ratings are used to determine a players Handicap Factor which allows golfers to compete regardless of ability.

3. Golf Canada Score Centre

Provided by Golf Canada, this online service allows tracking of handicaps and handicap factors. It also has significant communication abilities which can be utilized my members and member clubs.

4. Rules of Golf Education Allows members to be educated and kept informed rules, as well as conducting clinics for officials and members.

5. Player Development A number of clinics/camps are conducted by Golf Professional Garth Goodbrandson and a team of fellow professionals for golfers of different skill levels and for clubs who do not have a PGA of Canada Professional.

6. National Golf in Schools Program

Launched in 2009 to grow the game of golf, this program is for elementary school aged children to learn the game of golf. We have over 100 schools involved and it is just getting bigger.

7. Scholarships

The Golf Manitoba Scholarship Fund and the Golf Canada Foundation offer scholarships to students with academic excellence and have participated in the golf community and are pursuing post secondary studies at a Canadian educational institution.

8. Fundraising Member clubs can apply to Golf Manitoba and provide 7 volunteers to work a 3 hour Bingo and receive $750.00.

9. Golf Canada Golf Card This card provides many benefits from hotel rates to insurance.

10. Information Newsletters and publications are available for all members and cover a variety of topics.

11. Regional Coaches In 2012 Golf Manitoba hired professionals in all 8 regions of the province to develop young golfers as well as prepare them for the Power Smart Games held in Swan River, Manitoba in July 2012. This program continued in 2013 with the regional training of our young athletes. Golf Manitoba also trained young golfers for the Summer Games which were hosted in Quebec this summer. The next Games will be the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games.

12. Women’s Golf Golf Manitoba has approval for a $10,000.00 grant from Golf Canada to support Women’s programs that have an impact on Women’s golf in Manitoba and NW Ontario.

For more information on what Golf Manitoba offers you the golfer and other benefits contact our office or go to our website www.golfmanitoba.mb.ca. I want to thank Dave Comaskey, Harvey Goehring, Wayne Leslie, George McLeod and staff for their work on membership this year. I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue promoting the many benefits that Golf Manitoba offers through this program to members and non-members alike.

Respectfully Submitted, Barry Hooke Membership Committee Chair

OFFICIALS COMMITTEE REPORT It has once again been a long and busy schedule of tournaments and rules clinics this year. The weather has been incredible and relatively bug free. To those tournament officials on scene; Lisa, Lorne, Evelyn and Gord, many thanks to you for your assistance, patience and professionalism throughout the year. To the office staff (Carol, Garth, John and Stacy), thank you for your tireless work. Special thanks to Dave Comaskey for his leadership and help in the past year. To those of you who marked courses and prepared Supplementary Local Rules for our events, my sincere thanks. To my fellow committee members (Betty Grant, Lou Spado, Louise Daymond, Don MacDonald), I say thank you and I hope that we will continue to work together in the same co-operative manner.

We also continued rules clinics during the winter that were well attended by players and officials and potential officials. We took our winter clinics to the clubs (St. Boniface, Rossmere, Breezy Bend, and St. Charles) this past winter and saw an increase in attendance primarily due to local members from each club. These clinics will be offered again in the coming winter and spring. Spring and Summer clinics were held at the Whitewater Golf Club in Thunder Bay, Shilo and Pinawa. Clearly this was the year of the road trip.

Golf Canada has a program for developing Rules officials. Levels 1 through 4 have been developed to make it easier for someone to learn more about the Rules of Golf or even become a rules official. The progression is as follows:

1 Levels One and Two are offered on-line through the Golf Canada website 2. Level 3 is conducted by the provincial golf associations. (Usually in September) 3. Level 4 is the National clinic run by Golf Canada.

Level 3 can be attempted by any volunteer to see how they measure up. If you really hope to pass the exam, it does take a good deal of preparation. It goes without saying that the strength of Golf Manitoba, aside from the staff members, is in the volunteers, who readily give up their time to ensure that the golfers of Manitoba and North West Ontario have a positive, pleasant experience participating in our competitions. Lastly, my thanks to those who participated in another successful season. Respectfully Submitted, Bob Fallis Officials Committee Chair

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REPORT

2013 Canada Games Golf Manitoba began preparation for the Canada Games during the winter months of 2012. Fourteen boys and 11 girls took part in an extensive year round program. During the winter months, participants received memberships and weekly practices at The Golf Dome as well as weekly fitness training led by Kate MacKenzie of Sure Fire Fitness, at Sport Manitoba’s Sport for Life Center, A busy summer schedule included testing on the Trackman Combine, the opportunity to participate on Golf Manitoba’s Nassau and Mundie Putter teams as well as a ten-round qualifier to determine Team Manitoba. Many of the participants who took part in the 2009 program have gone on to become top amateur players in the province. Golf Manitoba expects to see similar results from the 2013 program. Junior Girls Nassau Team 2013 was another fantastic season for the Junior Girls team. After finishing in second place during the regular season the girls defeated Niakwa in the semi-finals and then in a memorable final, defeated St. Boniface in an extra hole to win the B side Championship. The girls will gain great experience playing in the “A” Division in 2014. Once again Brenda Prystayko was an outstanding Non Playing Captain of the team and a huge thank you to Brenda for all the volunteer time she puts into junior girls golf in Manitoba. Junior Boys Mundie Putter Team The boys set a goal to finish in the top three teams of “B” Division which would qualify the team for the playoffs and to give them the opportunity to play in “A” Division in 2014. The regular season saw the boys attain their goal by finishing in second place and advancing to play Southwood in the first round of the playoffs. The boys gave Southwood an excellent match and lost in the first round of playoffs. Long time Non Playing Captain Dennis Prystayko again deserves a huge congrats for his dedication to junior boys program. Golf Manitoba is very fortunate to have people like the Prystayko’s giving up their time for young golfers in Manitoba. Over the years the Nassau and Mundie Putter Leagues have proven to be a great developing opportunity for young junior golfers in Manitoba. Thank you to all the golf clubs involved for your continued support of the Golf Manitoba Junior teams! 2013 Regional Team Championships With the success of the 2012 PowerSmart Manitoba Games, Golf Manitoba introduced a similar Team Championship in 2013 that involved Golf Professionals as Regional Coaches assisting. Twenty four players qualified in six regions for the Boys Team Championship and ten girls in three regions participated in the Girls Team Championship. All players involved were 16 years and under in the 2013 event. Thank you to the Regional Coaches who were Dave Scinocca, Tom Kinsman, Ed Boge, Darren McMillan and Rance Stangeland. CN Future Links Program Golf Manitoba continues to put a major emphasis with Junior Grassroots development. Player Development Intern, Evelyn Kampen, did a fantastic job of organizing and conducting many of the programs. This year over 5200 children took part in Golf Manitoba clinics and camps. The most popular program is the National Golf in

Schools program designed for elementary aged kids. In Manitoba, there are 112 elementary schools who own Golf in Schools kits and 7 High Schools who are actively promoting golf in their school. Other Future Links programs offered through Golf Manitoba are the City of Winnipeg camps, the U of M Mini U camps and the Rural Clinic program. PGA of Canada’s Glen Sirkis has conducted the City of Winnipeg and Mini U camps for the past 5 years. Golf Manitoba is fortunate to have someone with Glen’s experience and passion for the promotion of junior golf in Manitoba. Golf Canada plays a big role in Junior Development throughout Canada. The funding that Golf Manitoba receives allows these programs to be such an affordable and enjoyable introduction to golf for the participants. University of Manitoba Golf Team The 2013 season was another amazing year for the University of Manitoba Golf Team. The Bisons finished in 5 th place at the 2013 Canadian University/College Championship and went on to win four of six events during the fall season. The Bisons won the Concordia Invite, Augsburg Invitational, Erv Kaiser Invitational and the Twin Cities Classic. In the past two fall seasons the Bisons have won 9 out of the 13 tournaments that they have participated in. Some team records that were broken this fall season are:

Scott Mazur low 18 hole score of 62 shot at the Village Green GC in Fargo.

Low team 2 round total of 14 under par at the Village Green GC. Team members were Josh Wytinck,

Charlie Boyechko, Bryce Barr, Scott Mazur and Burke Wiebe.

Most individual wins in a row. Josh Wytinck with 3.

Lowest two round total by Josh Wytinck with a 36 hole score of 10 under par 134.

Lowest fall season stroke average of 71.9 by Josh Wytinck

Most rounds under par Josh Wytinck with 4

The Bison team is excited to know that their home course, Southwood Golf & Country Club, will play host to the 2014 Canadian University/College Championship. Respectfully Submitted,

Garth Goodbrandson Director of Player Development

TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE REPORT I am pleased to present the Golf Manitoba Tournament Committee report for 2013. This golf season saw another great slate of Golf Manitoba tournaments. Mother Nature smiled upon us with good weather (most of the time) and a lot of great golf was played over the past five months. Highlights of the 2013 golf season are as follows:

This year Golf Manitoba conducted 18 championships and 3 qualifiers. There were approximately 1070 participants in 2013, which was down slightly from 2012.

Increasing participation levels at all Golf Manitoba events continues to be a key objective of the Tournament Committee. 2013 saw the continued implementation of changes initiated in 2012:

o The Women’s City and District Championship once again offered a non-competitive flight for players who may want to experience a competitive event without having their scores posted. In 2013, there were 19 competitors in total, an increase of 12% over the previous year.

o The Women’s Amateur and Men’s Mid Amateur Championships were run together as a single tournament for a second year. Feedback on this approach has been positive and it will continue next year. Participation levels increased by 12.5% for women, however decreased by 23% for the men. We will continue to monitor this event in 2014.

o The Senior Men and Women’s Championships were also run together as a single tournament for the second year and skill events were offered during the tournament. This approach has also been well received and will continue next year. Participation levels increased from 18 to 26 (44%) for senior women and from 47 to 49 (4%) for senior men.

For the fifth year running, we are very pleased and fortunate to have Nott Autocorp as the Title Sponsor for the Men’s Amateur Championship. This year the Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship was played at the Neepawa Golf and Country Club, with 118 competitors participating. The rural location was popular as participation in the qualifier for this event exceeded expectations. Neepawa Golf and Country Club was a great host and provided an excellent venue.

2013 marks the third year for allowing the use of motorized golf carts in all competitions (except Juniors). This has been a positive and successful policy change, continuing to be well received by competitors and welcomed by the tournament host clubs.

Golf Manitoba’s Pace-of-Play program continued to ensure that tournaments are conducted with a comfortable and reasonable pace of play of just over 4 and a half hours.

Our wonderful and dedicated volunteers continue to be the key to our success, allowing Golf Manitoba to provide quality events. Our volunteers were present at all Golf Manitoba events filling approximately 340 positions throughout the year, including rules officials, starters, scorers, timers, course markers, and score board markers. Their commitment and dedication is greatly appreciated!

To all of our host clubs - thank you for hosting Golf Manitoba events and supporting competitive golf in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.

Also, I would like to thank the 2013 Tournament Committee members of Louise Daymond, Barry Hooke, Michelle Lee, Carol Martel, Maria Funston and staff members Dave Comaskey (Executive Director), Lisa Andersen (Director of Competitions), Gord Hudson (Tournament Administrator) and Lorne How (Tournament Administrator) who work so tirelessly and enthusiastically to continue improving Golf Manitoba events for our members.

TREASURER’S REPORT

The board of directors of Golf Manitoba Inc. (GM) is pleased to present the audited financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2013 and report to the members that GM recorded a net surplus of $15,120 for the fiscal period (2012 - $4,071). The board of directors, through its administrative team managed the operations of GM guided by the annual budget limits it adopted. The budget was developed using best estimates for the overall delivery of programs and services of GM. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013, the board of directors had budgeted for a modest surplus of $1,213 while final results, as noted above, show a net surplus of $15,120. The final results were affected by several contributing factors including, but not limited to: 1. Revenues – total revenues for the year were under the budgeted amount by approximately $29,000. The

major categories were:

Description Actual Budget Over (Under)

Variance

Membership Dues $152,006 $144,737 $7,269

Tournament Entrance Fees $120,348 $126,799 ($6,451)

Base Support and Grants $204,463 $213,316 ($8,853)

Camps and Clinic Fees $29,900 $41,800 ($11,900)

The 2013 budget was prepared to accommodate a 5% decrease in membership. Fortunately, the

projected decrease did not occur and actual membership dues exceeded budget.

Sports Manitoba base support and other provincial sports grants were below budget expectations. The

reduced revenue was mitigated by modifying program expenditures accordingly.

Camps and clinics set up primarily for the 2012 Manitoba Summer Games and the 2013 Canada

Summer Games tryout and training squads experienced fewer participants than expected. Again,

program and service delivery was modified to accommodate fewer participants.

Fewer golfers participated in the provincial championships that budgeted.

2. Expenses – total expenses for the year were under the budgeted amount by approximately $42,000. The

major categories were:

Description Actual Budget Over (Under)

Variance

General Office Expenses $59,316 $63,576 ($4,260)

Salaries and Benefits $251,567 $253,997 ($2,430)

Program Management $60,861 $87,276 ($26,415)

Tournament Expenses $105,923 $114,949 ($9,026)

Administrative and general office expenses were managed to address the reduction in related grants.

Programs and services budgeted for the 2012 Manitoba Summer Games, the 2013 Canada Summer

Games and regional coaches winter program were managed to address the smaller number of

participants.

- 16 -

Fewer participants in the provincial championships resulted in savings related to honorariums, meals,

fees, officials costs, etc.

The amount of revenue received and/or generated directly and indirectly affects the programs and services provided to the golfing community by Golf Manitoba. Our administration staff exercised their best efforts to ensure that the integrity of the program and/or service was maintained at the highest level possible within the available resources. I would like to thank our administration staff for the continued effort and diligence. Respectfully Submitted, Vince Mariani Treasurer

Rob MacDonald is the Golf Manitoba Provincial Council Representative and Harvey Goehring is now the Chair of Provincial Council. The Mandate of the Provincial Council is: “As the interface between Golf Canada and the Provincial Golf Associations, the Provincial Council shall review key governance, strategic and policy issues and communicate any such issues to the Golf Canada Board of Directors that may impact the working relationship between Golf Canada and the Provincial Golf Associations.” We met during the Golf Canada AGM and have three conference call meetings during the year. Our focus for the year is on: 1) Improving Communications

The Provincial Golf Associations and Golf Canada share the same goal, namely To Grow the Game of Golf. To help us achieve this goal we share successful activities and discuss our challenges. To measure results, we review weighted Key Performance Indicators.

2) Membership Strategy Some Provincial Golf Associations are trying different membership models, plus emphasizing the value of the handicap and course rating system as a value for membership .They are currently evaluating the results.

3) Golf Canada Programs For Juniors The Golf in Schools program for the elementary grades has now been expanded to include Golf in High Schools. Golf Clubs and individuals can help finance these programs by becoming a sponsor and receive a charitable donation benefit. The Future Links programs also continue to grow. MANITOBA GOLF SCHOLARSHIP FUND REPORT (A REGISTERED CHARITY)

The Fund’s mandate is to provide scholarships to young golfers for the advancement and furtherance of their education at a Canadian post-secondary educational institution through the receipt, investment, accumulation and disbursement of funds for that purpose. Scholarships are awarded to golfers who are members of golf clubs which are members of Golf Manitoba, and who submit applications which meet established criteria. The Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund’s policy is to build our capital through contributions received and to provide annual scholarships from the interest earned on the accumulated capital. The Fund has increased from the initial capital of $6,000 to a current balance exceeding $150,000. The Fund’s capital continues to grow, based upon the generosity of golf club and individual donors. This year, the Board is pleased to announce the creation of the Dwight Parkinson Memorial Scholarship Award, in the amount of $3500, to be awarded annually to the secondary school graduate applicant with the highest scholastic achievement. In addition, a contribution of $3500 will be made annually to the capital fund, to help in building our capital base. Our generous donor’s offer will run for five consecutive years. In 2006, Dr. Daya Gupta contributed $10,000.00 to the Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund, to support an annual $1500.00 award to the applicant with the highest scholastic achievement. In 2013, we have presented the eighth consecutive, and last Dr. Daya Gupta Scholarship Award for scholastic achievement. The Board wishes to thank Drs. Daya and Chandra Gupta for their outstanding contribution in support of Manitoba’s young golfers. Award winners for 2013 were:

- Dr. Dwight Parkinson Memorial Scholarship ($3500) Stephanie Lasiuk - Dr. Daya Gupta Scholarship Award ($1500) Lucas Wazney - 1st MGSF Scholarship Award ($1000) Bryce Barr - 2nd MGSF Scholarship Award ($1000) David Nelson - 3rd MGSF Scholarship Award ($1000) Eric Christianson

Since 1986 the fund has awarded 155 scholarships worth a total of $158,000. The Manitoba Golf Scholarship Fund is managed by a 7 member volunteer Board of Directors, with administrative support provided by Golf Manitoba. Information on the scholarship fund can be found on Golf Manitoba’s website at golfmanitoba.mb.ca. Respectfully Submitted, Dennis Langrell President

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

The 2013 golf season began much later than we had all hoped with most courses not being fully operational until the middle of May. When a season begins this late, it can create a number of challenges for golf clubs. It is very difficult for some courses to make up for the lost revenue that would have been generated in these opening weeks. Let’s hope that the fall season cooperates. One of the many highlights for me during the 2013 golf season was the dedication of our Canada Games Training Squad. This group of young male and female athletes led by Garth Goodbrandson, Director of Player Development, trained together for a year and a half and the teams were selected based on a number of competitive rounds. The teams’ efforts were amazing! Three boys and three girls had the opportunity to represent Manitoba at the Games. Those that did not qualify for the team will continue to benefit from the training they received for their long-term development. Golf Manitoba prides itself on investing in our young athletes and I am confident the long-term result will be positive. Golf Manitoba along with our national partner Golf Canada, continue to strive to deliver programs and services that will grow the game of golf. The National Golf in Schools program and Future Links have grown and the result should be more people playing the game. In the 13 seasons I have been involved in administration of amateur golf, I truly believe that these programs will have a significant impact. Anyone wishing to sponsor a school or learn more about these programs is welcome to contact our office for information. Membership in Golf Manitoba and Golf Canada declined in 2013 by approximately 8% (1400 members). The provincial and the national bodies are both extremely dependent on the support from our members and member clubs in order to deliver our programs and services. For the equivalent of two sleeves of golf balls (depending on what kind of balls you play), your support provides valuable resources that provincially and nationally assist with player development programs, education of golf related topics, handicap and course rating services, golf-related publications and communications, support of provincial and national Hall of Fames and scholarship and foundation activities. Your membership dollars are put to very good use and greatly appreciated! At our Annual General Meeting this year, the Golf Manitoba Board of Director will have three people step away from their roles as Board members. They are Past President Harvey Goehring (Breezy Bend), Brian Gilhuly (Selkirk) and Carol Martel (Transcona). I would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment to our Association. They all made a difference! I would like to thank outgoing President Rob MacDonald for his passion and professionalism over the past two years. Rob is the only person to serve as President of the former Manitoba Golf Association and the current Golf Manitoba. This accomplishment is a true testament of how he feels about this great game and giving back to it. Lastly, thank you to the Association volunteers and the staff. Our goals and objectives could not be achieved without you. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated.

Respectfully Submitted,

Dave Comaskey Executive Director

Golf Manitoba Volunteer Recognition

2012 Distinguished Service Award

Joyce Collier of the Portage Golf Club was the sixth recipient of the annual Golf Manitoba Distinguished Service Award. Joyce provided the leadership as the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum became a reality in 2003 and her lengthy record of service to the golf community has resulted in her inclusion as part of this year’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony. She served as president of the Hall of Fame and Museum from 2003 to 2006 and as chair of the induction event from 2003 to 2011. She was a member of the selection committee from 2003 to 2011 and also served on the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame selection committee from 2010 to 2012. Her involvement with the sport started at her home course, serving as president, vice-president, handicap chair and junior chair for the Portage Ladies' Golf Club. She initiated the introduction to golf program at Portage la Prairie schools and was a director of the club's junior girls and boys section. On the provincial scene, Collier served as District D chairman, then on the Manitoba Ladies' Golf Association executive as junior director in 1983-84, teams director in 1992-93, vice-president in 1994-95 and president in 1995-97. Nationally, she was director of player development for the Canadian Ladies' Golf Association in 1998-2000 and associate governor of the Royal Canadian Golf Association in 2006-2008. She was on the rules committee for the national CLGA junior and amateur tournaments in 1981, publicity chair for the 1991 National junior championship and provincial president for the 1996 national senior championship. She also worked as a volunteer on starting and scoring at national and CN Future Links events from 2006 to 2010 and was chair of the ecology committee for the 2010 Canadian Women's Open championship. She was named sports person of the year in Portage la Prairie in 1998, earned a CLGA distinguished service award in 2000 and was presented with honorary life membership by the Portage Golf Club in 2004. An award in her name was presented by the Portage Ladies' Golf Club in 1993 and is presented annually to a junior golfer. Her other volunteer activities have included service as a General Board Member of the Southport Aerospace Centre Inc. and past board member of the Portage Figure Skating Club, Portage Minor Hockey and Manitoba Arthritis Society. Along with the Distinguished Service Award, Golf Manitoba also recognized all volunteers within the Association for their years of service to the association. Recognition was given to those individuals reaching the five, ten, fifteen and twenty years of service benchmarks.

1. DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION

Golf Manitoba Inc. (the “organization”) is a non-profit organization established to develop, promote, governand service the game of golf in Manitoba and North West Ontario for the benefit of all participants.

The organization is exempt from taxation as a non-profit entity under Section 149(1) of the Income Tax Act.

2. FIRST TIME ADOPTION OF ACCOUNTING STANDARDS FOR NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

During the year the company adopted accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. These financialstatements are the first prepared in accordance with these standards. The changes have not resulted in anychanges to previously reported amounts.

3. SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. Because a precise determination of many assets and liabilities is dependent upon futureevents, the preparation of financial statements for a period necessarily involves the use of estimates which havebeen made using careful judgement. The financial statements have, in management's opinion, been properlyprepared within the reasonable limits of materiality and within the framework of the significant accountingpolicies summarized below:

Financial instruments

Financial instruments are recorded at fair value when acquired or issued. In subsequent periods, financial assetswith actively traded markets are reported at fair value, with any unrealized gains and losses reported in income. All other financial instruments are reported at amortized cost, and tested for impairment at each reporting date.Transaction costs on the acquisition, sale, or issue of financial instruments are expensed when incurred.

Investments

Investments, which consist of primarily GIC'S, are carried at amortized cost, which approximates fair value.

Capital assets

Capital assets are stated at cost or deemed cost less accumulated amortization. Capital assets are amortized overtheir estimated useful lives on a straight-line basis at the following rates and methods:

Computer software 25% straight-line methodOffice equipment 25% straight-line methodOffice furniture 10% straight-line methodTournament equipment 25% straight-line method

The organization regularly reviews its capital assets to eliminate obsolete items. Government grants are treatedas deferred capital contributions and amortized over the useful life of the underlying asset.

Capital assets acquired during the year but not placed into use are not amortized until they are placed into use.
