PAC and IPAC - Update

Once we get through the ’11 time transition, North America (NA) will be hosting an xPAC conference every 18 months: continuing the co-sponsoring by APS-DPB and IEEE-NPSS. IPACs in the Spring (’12, ’15, ’18, etc.) and PACs (’13, ’16, ’19, etc.) in the Fall.

There will be an IPAC conference every year in the Spring, rotating in the order: Asia, Europe, NA (’12), Asia, Europe, NA (’15), etc.

We (APS or IEEE) don’t sponsor or technical co-sponsor (yet) IPACs held outside NA.

We work well with colleagues -- European colleagues agreed to shift IPAC’11 to the fall so that there would be little conflict with our planned PAC’11 in New York.

PAC’09, hosted by the TRIUMF laboratory was held in Vancouver B.C. Canada, 2009 May 4th-8th. It was a technical, industrial and scientific success; as well as a cultural and interchange/discussion success.

Books closed now. APS still has not received their funds from IEEE! Loss from the conference about $35,552 (a 3.9% loss), an amount split between APS and IEEE. IEEE has the $25k advance loan from APS on their books. Audited 2010/05/28 by PWC and signed off by TRIUMF 05/31.

IEEE owes APS $7.2k ($25k - $17.776k = $7.224k).

We are still waiting to close our APS books on this conference!!!!

approved the conference format, and ensured there was adequate financial contingency and no hotel overbooking. Expect 800 attendees.

Conference chair is Thomas Roser (BNL), SPC chair is Vladimir Litvinenko (BNL) and LOC chair is Michael Sivertz (BNL). An exciting program has been set up, including tutorial sessions in the morning.

Concentration banking account with Wachovia Bank via the IEEE working very well. Both APS and IEEE provided loans of $25k.

As of Mar 22: Income - $791.218k; Expenses - $692.647k; Contingency - $48.571k

Conference Chair is Victor Suller (LSU), SPC chair is Jeff Corbett (Stanford) and LOC chair is Kevin Morris (LSU). Expect ~ 1200 attendance (500 rooms booked)

A concentration banking account for IPAC’12 has been set up via IEEE conference services. Both APS and IEEE have provided a $25k loan to assist with initial preparations for the conference.

The program will consist of plenary sessions on Monday morning and Friday afternoon. The remaining mornings and afternoons will have three parallel sessions each. Although poster sessions will each be for a half day, posters may remain mounted all day to give attendees full opportunity to see them. A student poster session will be held Sunday afternoon. A “Lou Costrell” awards ceremony will be held on Thursday afternoon, when prizes will be given for IEEE, APS, USPAS awards and for the best student posters. As an experiment, several posters per session will be selected (by the SPC) for electronic presentation on large flat screen displays.

The conference will take place in the fall of 2016 and will be held in the

Chicago region. Details for this conference are being looked into by the acting Chair for the conference, Marion White of ANL. Projected attendance is 750 and the conference program will be geared toward early career scientists, engineers and students.

Decisions on chair and other officials to be made at the March 2011 PAC OC meeting.

Superconducting applications span the range from small scale analog and digital circuits and systems, to large scale applications of electrical power generation, storage, and transmission. Applications include the development and enhancement of the associated materials.

What should NPSS do???

Section 1. The Council shall be composed of representatives from the IEEE Member Societies listed in the Bylaws. Each represented Society must agree to share responsibility for all financial obligations of the Council, in accordance to this Council Constitution and the Bylaws.

Section 2. Each new Council Member Society must receive approval by a two-thirds vote of the existing Council Members and by the IEEE Technical Activities Board before it may join the Council.

Section 3. The Administrative Committee of the Council, AdCom, shall consist of the voting members of the Council, the non-voting ex-Officio members of the Council, Article III, Section 9, and the Editors of the IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity.
