Environmental commitmentAt Passivent, we are fully committed tominimising our impact on the environmentwhilst at the same time maintaining ourhigh standards of product quality.

We have implemented a number of goodpractice initiatives in order to demonstrateour commitment to sustainability including:

ISO 14001Passivent holds accreditation to ISO 14001,the European standard that addresses theeffectiveness of a company’s EnvironmentalManagement System.

Reducing carbon emissions and usingnatural resourcesOur Pinxton and Merthyr factories use‘green’ electricity from renewable energysources such as wind farms rather thanpower stations which release millions oftonnes of carbon dioxide. Energy efficientlightbulbs are fitted in the offices butnatural daylight is used where possible.Tubular rooflights (Sunscoops) are fittedwithin internal corridors where there is nonatural daylight and cost savings againstartificial lighting are being monitored.

PalletsPallets returned in good condition are re-used. Poor condition, unusable pallets aresent back to the suppliers and 100% recycled.

Factory recyclingThe majority of waste plastics (polypropylene,PVC and ABS), aluminium, lead andpackaging are sent away and 100% recycled.

Constituent materialsMaterials used in production have recycledcontent ranging between 75% and 90% forABS. 80% of packaging used by the companyis recycled material. Timber is purchasedfrom firms accredited to sustainable sourcessuch as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsementof Forest Certification). 90% of finishedplastic products are sprayed with water-based paints which have a low impact on theenvironment.

Passivent design their products to ensurethey have a significant impact on thesustainable design of a building.

    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

    Window Aircool

    AIRCOOL FAÇADE VENTILATORS

The Aircool provides controlled ventilationthrough external walls and glazing systems. The electrically actuated ventilators providecontrolled air intake and extract in natural(passive) ventilation systems, and may alsobe used for air intake or extract inmechanical ventilation systems. Controlledindividually, or linked to an overall buildingenergy management system, they areparticularly suitable for night coolingthrough automatic control. They provideexcellent thermal insulation and air-tightness performance in the closed position.

Thermal Aircool ventilatorThe Passivent Thermal Aircool has beenspecifically designed to supply buildings withwarm, fresh air during cooler weather. It alsoprovides a fresh air inlet in warmerconditions. The Thermal Aircool systemincludes a low resistance airflow heater coil, which has been specially designed fornatural ventilation systems, resulting inhigh ventilation rates. A temperature sensorin the unit precisely controls the heater coilheat output. Combined with the Passiventrange of natural ventilation controllers, thisensures the correct level of ventilation issupplied at the required temperature.

Passivent have been instrumental in thedesign of products for commercial buildingsthrough the NatVent group. Today theproduct range includes roof terminals,façade ventilators and window actuators. These product groups have undergoneextensive research to make them ideal foruse in the UK and other European countrieswith a moderate climate. Naturallyventilated buildings typically consume lessthan half the energy used in air-conditionedbuildings. It is for this reason that naturalventilation contributes towards BREEAMand CRC credits and is a suitable strategy formost buildings.

The key to successful implementation of anatural ventilation strategy is to consider itsapplication during the preliminary stages inthe design of a building. Decisions aboutbuilding plan, orientation and other factorswill enable the most effective use to be madeof natural ventilation.

Clients, developers and building designersshould therefore consult natural ventilationexperts such as Passivent as early as possiblein the design process.

    MIXED MODE STRATEGY

In buildings such as offices with a high heatload from IT equipment, some additionalcooling may be required. Passivent havedeveloped mixed-mode cooling systemscombining natural ventilation with carefullycontrolled local cooling for the best of bothworlds.

This approach is economical in operationsince cooling is usually needed only atperiods of peak demand and in areas ofspecific need. Passivent studies have shownthat a well-designed mixed-mode system canout-perform a conventional air-conditionedbuilding, with substantially less energy use.

    AIRSCOOP DISPLACEMENT TERMINALS

The Airscoop is a roof-mounted louvredterminal which provides displacementventilation using wind power. Separatedducts channel cooler, denser air down intothe building regardless of wind direction.Warmer, lighter air is displaced upwards andout on the leeward side of the terminals. The Airscoop can be used for night cooling.Particularly designed for spaces with higherceilings and large open buildings such asretail stores, halls, auditoriums andindustrial buildings.

    AIRSTRACT ROOF TERMINALS

The Airstract is a roof-mounted louvredterminal that combines low airflowresistance with high airflow capacity andweather resistance, through a patenteddouble bank louvre design. Modern, traditional and circular terminal designs are available in a range of standard sizes.Bespoke terminals can also be designedwithout affecting the performance orweatherability. Used with Aircool façadeventilators for passive stack applications, deep plan ventilation and night cooling.

    8

SustainabilityThe sun is a sustainable light source, andnatural daylight can make a significantcontribution to sustainable building design.Rooflights are an effective and efficientmeans of maximising natural daylight indark areas, often virtually eliminating theneed for supplementary electric lightingduring the day. Passivent natural daylightsystems are used to complement artificiallighting and can considerably reduce theannual energy consumption of any building, thereby reducing CO2 emissions.

Proven benefits of natural lightScientific studies have shown the positivebenefits of natural daylight for health andwellbeing in a range of applications. TheCIBSE Office Lighting Guide states thatNatural Daylight is an almost universalworker requirement. When given a choice, most people prefer a working environmentwith daylight to one without. It referencesdocumented evidence confirming thatexcluding daylight leads to increasednumbers of complaints about the workingenvironment, and may adversely affectproductivity. The Daylight WorkplaceRegulations state that “The lighting in everyworkplace shall, as far as is reasonablypractical, be by natural light.”

BRE Environmental Assessment MethodThe benefits of natural daylighting arerecognised by the Building ResearchEstablishment (BRE) EnvironmentalAssessment Method (BREEAM). BREEAMModules cover: offices, healthcare, retail, industrial buildings and schools. Passiventnatural daylight systems can contribute tothe credits available under the Health andWellbeing Section HW01 and the EnergySection E01.

    SUNSCOOP TUBULAR ROOFLIGHT

The Sunscoop Tubular rooflight is used tobring natural daylight into internal roomsand spaces that have no, or insufficient, natural daylighting from windows. Natural daylight enters through a roof-mounted dome or skylight and is reflecteddown a mirrored tube and into the roombelow through a ceiling-mounted diffuser.Particularly useful for rooms and spacesbelow another room or a pitched roof.

The Sunscoop hybrid is a 350mm unit with adaylight controlled dimmable low energycompact fluorescent luminaire integratedinto the ceiling diffuser assembly to providea more consistent light level despitechanging external daylight conditions. The CIBSE Lighting Guide 10 – Daylightingstates that: “Case studies have shown that ina conventionally daylit commercial buildingthe choice of control can make 30-40%difference to the resulting light use”. The Sunscoop hybrid has a control unitwhich controls both occupancy and daylightlevels, maximising the energy savings fromlighting.

    METRODOME MODULAR ROOFLIGHT

The Metrodome is an all-aluminiumrooflight range offering ventilation optionsand thermal efficiency, with a choice ofdouble or triple polycarbonate glazing.Suitable for new-build or refurbishment, onboth warm and cold deck flat or low-pitchedroofs. Non-standard sizes can be made tosuit existing roof openings and kerbs. Accesshatches are also available.

    SUNSCOOP SQUARE DUCTEDROOFLIGHT

The Sunscoop square ducted shares many ofthe features of the tubular systems andincorporates additional features toaccommodate the system’s larger size. Itprovides high levels of natural daylight overlonger lengths, meaning the product cancontribute to the reduction of energydemand in commercial buildings. Thesquare design increases delivery of naturaldaylight through its larger cross sectionalarea compared to circular. The square designalso creates a stronger reflective tube forlarger sizes and eases the roof installationinterface on site.

    PASSIVENT SOLUTION CONTRIBUTESTO EXCELLENT RATING

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) provides akey link between front line troops andfamilies in the UK through its ServicePersonnel & Veterans Agency (SPVA). SPVAbased at Imjin Barracks formerly known asRAF Innsworth had been scattered acrossseveral buildings on the site until the MODcommissioned Debut Services to refurbishan existing two storey building. This allowedSPVA to house their Imjin based functionslike the joint Casualty & CompassionateCentre (JCCC), Medal Office and CorporateServices in one, multi-discipline building. The brief was to minimise the environmentalimpact whilst improving team surroundings.

A key criterion of the design brief was to makethe 1960s, 3800m² office building assustainable as possible, achieving a ratingunder DREAM (Defence RelatedEnvironmental Assessment Methodology, equivalent to the ‘mainstream’ BREEAM tool).

Passivent’s solution to the brief included winddriven RAD Airscoop Ventilators, AirstractOutlet Terminals and Aircool FaçadeVentilators, all managed by the company’sinnovative iC7000 controller. Strategicallypositioned Sunscoop tubular rooflights werecentral eco-elements in the project, complemented by rainwater harvesting andimproved insulation. These solutionscombined achieved a DREAM ‘excellent’rating through design and construction.

Chris Kenny, project architect at StrideTreglown who designed the upgrade of

the building for construction by DebutServices, elaborates,

“The original building was 80% mechanicallyventilated. We needed to replace the façade, sodecided to explore the use of naturalventilation through openable windows andPassivent natural ventilation to ensure goodair quality throughout the deep plan: thisoption was actually cheaper thanmaintaining the façade and replacingall the M&E plant associated withmechanical ventilation! We were also concerned aboutproviding adequate daylight, especially in the deep plancirculation areas: Passivent’sSunscoops optimised natural lightacross the floor space, therebyimproving the quality of thatspace, and reducing runningcosts.”

The Passivent solution includedsix RAD Airscoops for the singlestorey open plan officeenvironment offering the bestair distribution and office design flexibility.

The ground floor was ventilated using acombination of Window Aircools (forcontrolled background ventilation and securenight time cooling) and openable windows.Extraction was achieved through a mixedmode ventilation approach employingmechanical ventilation.

The iC7000 controller was selected because itlends itself to the larger office environment, monitoring internal and external conditionssuch as CO2 and air temperature.

Thirty eight 350mm diameter Sunscooptubular rooflights were used to maximisenatural daylight into all areas of the building, achieving good light levels without the needfor artificial lighting. Each Sunscoop wassupplied with a LSD (Light Sun Deflector)which can increase the light level by as muchas 20% at the ceiling diffuser.

Paul Nix, Debut Core Works Director, commented, “Collaborative working betweenall parties and our supply chain partners, including Passivent, has ensured that we havedelivered a high quality, sustainable facilityfor our customer.”
