Introduction
Dear Friend,
We are thrilled to invite you to join us for a weekend of all things bungalow in historic Pasadena, California from October 11th through the 13th!
Our efforts to promote the uniquely American bungalow extend to the west coast this fall where we will explore the rich architectural history of Pasadena with exclusive private tours of Arts and Crafts era homes, the pristine Gamble House and the tranquil botanical gardens of the Huntington Library and Estate.
As the Chicago bungalow is rooted in the architectural history of Southern Cali-fornia, Pasadena makes for an ideal inaugural bungalow tour. The city boasts one of the best collections of bungalows in the country with thousands of Arts and Crafts style homes, Bungalow Heaven, one of the largest house tours, and an average temperature of 70 degrees that can’t be beat.
Relax in the elegant courtyard at the historic Langham Hotel, immerse yourself in the glory of the Huntington Botanical Gardens and lose yourself in the Arts and Crafts splendor that lives in the Gamble House museum.
What better way to support HCBA’s local initiative to maintain, preserve and adapt Chicago’s historic housing type than by joining us as we visit Chicago’s roots!
We hope to see you in Pasadena this October!
Safe Travels,
Mary Ellen Guest
Executive Director

(Cont’d) Saturday, October 11, 12:30pm The Raymond Restaurant Enjoy a private lunch at the Raymond Restaurant, a living example of Pasa-dena’s past that carries on the city’s great traditions of craftsman architec-ture. In 1886, Walter Raymond, a Boston native, came to Pasadena and built the Raymond Hotel for Eastern-
ers looking to escape harsh winter weather. The original hotel was burned to the ground in 1895, but the resil-ient Mr. Raymond erected an even grander hotel with 300 rooms, along with a charming caretaker’s
cottage. Sadly, in 1931, the 2nd gen-eration Raymond Hotel was again destroyed during the Great Depres-sion. Walter and his wife moved into the cottage, which is now the Ray-mond Restaurant.
2:30pm Bungalow Heaven Private Home Tour Tour four historic bunga-lows in Bungalow Heaven, Pasadena’s first Landmark Historic Dis-trict—a gem in the cen-ter of the city. The ma-jority of the homes found in Bungalow Heaven were built during the Arts and Crafts pe-riod of the early 20th century, and illus-trate the way ordi-nary fami-lies of the period lived. This tour will provide an oppor-tunity see how modern families use their historic spaces today.
