5BD VACUTAINER® TUBE INFORMATION

BD Vacutainer® Tube Information

BD Hemogard™BD Vacutainer® Blood Collection Tubes incorporate the latex-free

BD Hemogard™ closure1, which has two parts: an inner stopper and an outer

protective cap. The BD Hemogard™ closure protects the user from contact

with patients’ blood and is easier to remove than conventional stoppers2, and

The BD Hemogard™ closure may also be removed using an automated system.

BD Vacutainer® Blood Collection Tubes can be recapped using secondary over-caps.

BD Microgard™BD Microtainer® Blood collection tubes feature an integrated collection

scoop and are available with a conventional Flotop or BD Microgard™

closure. The BD Microgard™ closure has a recessed sealing plug and a

unique “twist-assist” safety feature to help reduce splatter upon removal.

BD Microtainer® Tubes with BD Microgard™ closure have a wider diameter

for ease of collection and improved mixing.

Tube DimensionsBD Vacutainer® tubes come in three main sizes, each with a range of different draw volumes. Other sizes are available and the offering varies from tube to tube. For details of tube sizes per additive please refer to the relevant tube section.

Product ComplianceBd Vacutainer® Blood Collection Tubes and ancillary equipment are In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices. These comply with the requirements described in the European In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Device Directive 98/79/EC.

Bd Precision Glide™ Blood Collection Needles, Bd Vacutainer® Blood Collection Sets, Bd Microlance™ Lancets and Critical Care Syringes with needles are (class IIa) Medical Devices and as such, comply with the requirements of the European Medical Device Directive, 93/42/EEC.

All product unit labels ( and most packaging levels ) carry the CE mark, signifying conformity to the above Directives. Transportation boxes and their accessories are neither Medical Devices nor In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices and as such, are not required to comply with the above directives.

The UK manufacturing plant, which supplies most European product, is certificated to ISO 13485:2003 and ISO 14001:2004. As a supplier to the US market the plant is also subject to FDA inspection and therefore holds an FDA establishment registration certificate. Copies of all these certificates can be provided upon request.

Other BD manufacturing plants carry similar certification, which can also be provided upon request.

All products are designed and manufactured in accordance with the relevant international and or European standards. This includes but is not limited to ISO 6710, EN14820 (for blood collection tubes), ISO 6009 (for blood collection needles), EN 980 (for symbols used on product labelling).

The product shelf life is based on data from stability testing and varies from product to product. All expiry dates are clearly printed on product unit and box labels, and products can be used until the end of the month specified.

Clinical dataPrior to launching a new product BD conducts extensive clinical evaluation. Data can be provided upon request.

Product sterilisationAll products are sterilised using either gamma irradiation in accordance with ANSI/AAM/ISO 11137 - 1995 “Sterilisation of Health Care Products (Requirements for Validation and Routine Control - Radiation Sterilisation)”, Ethylene Oxide (EtO) in accordance with ISO 11135 - 1994 “Validation and Routine Control of Ethylene Oxide Sterilisation” or Moist Heat Sterilisation in accordance with EN554 : 1994 “Sterilisation of Medical Devices - Validation and Routine Control of Sterilisation by Moist Heat”. Microbiological environmental assessment for bio-burden levels is conducted routinely, in accordance with our standard operating procedures.

All BD Vacutainer® IVD’s and Medical Devices are sterilised to an SAL (Sterility Assurance Level) of 10-6, in accordance with eN 556 : 1995 - Requirement for terminally sterilised devices to be labelled “STERILE”.

BD Preanalytical Systems can provide innovative, validated and

integrated transport solutions which help you to comply with the

Transport of Dangerous Goods Regulations as well as with your EN

ISO 15189 Quality Systems Requirements. These products have been

designed to help maintain temperature, monitor, validate and record

transport conditions and to help ensure safety for healthcare workers.

BD Microtainer® MAP (Microtube for Automated Processing)

The BD Microtainer® MAP (Microtube for Automated Processing) is the first one-piece, instrument-

compatible microtube. Its innovative design can help improve workflow because it fits standard instrument

racks and is compatible with the most commonly used instrument platforms. The easier to handle one-piece

13 x 75mm tube eliminates the need for assembly and discard of extra contaminated parts, and a full size,

standard label with V-Notch™ feature helps to avoid potential labelling errors. Product details and code are on

BD Vacutainer® Rapid Serum Tube (BD™ RST)BD Vacutainer® Rapid Serum Tube (BD™ RST) is designed to optimise

laboratory efficiency and provide a high quality serum sample that reduces

test repeats, redraws and instrument downtime. The BD™ RST provides

a clotted sample within 5 minutes of blood collection with minimal fibrin

formation.

With the speed of plasma and the quality of serum, BD™ RST is the ideal

tube for your STAT procedures. Product details and code are on page 14.

Tubes (pages 12-24)BD Diagnostics – Preanalytical Systems is an industry pioneer and leader in evacuated blood collection systems. BD Vacutainer® Blood Collection Tubes comply with the ISO 6710 and EN 14820 standards and follow the internationally agreed colour code for blood collection tubes. BD can also provide alternative stopper colours to meet the special needs of individual customers – see page 46.

Needles (pages 25-30) BD is the leading supplier of safety-engineered products for evacuated blood collection. The range includes the BD Vacutainer® Safety-Lok™ Blood Collection Set and the BD Vacutainer® Push Button Blood Collection Set, the only blood collection system with push button technology designed to effectively reduce needlestick injuries. BD also offers a comprehensive range of blood collection needles in a variety of gauges and lengths, including the BD Eclipse Safety Needle.
