And while it officially began on September 22, it seems mother nature took a little longer than usual to get the memo. Until the last week or so, most of us were walking around in t-shirts complaining about the summer- like weather. Not included in this cantankerous group, however, was my wife. When it comes to Teri and temperature, the hotter the better! She never met a 90º day she didn’t like. For her, every month could be August. Unfortunately for Teri, however, reality has finally set in. While most of us have been enjoying the milder 70º days, the cooler weather has sent Teri searching for her winter attire. If you drop by the house, you’ll most likely discover her outfitted in sweatpants, a hoodie, and a pair of gloves. She’ll stay in hiding until next June. I’m sure my transplanted neighbors from Massachusetts consider her a bit strange. Because of the cooler weather, earlier this week I had to consider doing the unthinkable. No sooner had I been able to turn off the AC, I was being forced to think about flipping the switch on the furnace. The customary pause in an elevated utility bill was being thrown out the window by the sudden swing in temperatures. But what’s a man to do when the wife is no longer willing to inhabit a 60º home? So flip the switch I did - but only to be met by silence. The warmer air never came. In my search for answers, I donned my work clothes and headed underneath our house. I soon discovered a loud hum and a warm motor. The internet quickly identified the ailing part as a draft inducer. It ensures any combustible gases are cleared from around the heater by sending them out a pipe that is vented through the roof. If the draft inducer isn’t working, the heater won’t come on. After a consult with our worship leader, and HVAC man, Chris Bryan, I learned I needed to try to spin a small fan that was part of the draft inducer. Even though I wasn’t very optimistic, I took his advice. After a light touch to a fan blade, however, the furnace came back to life - and my wife invited me back into the house! Who would have ever guessed I was so close to a warm house? All it took was a simple light touch! The same can be said of us. Sometimes the pressures of life can bring us to a standstill; they can keep us from moving forward. But there is great power in a simple touch, a kind gesture, or a word of encouragement. May we never underestimate or overlook the difference such Christ-like gestures can make in our lives - for warmth truly is only a touch away. Serving Jesus Together, Pastor Todd

There’s been a lot of talk about

the beginning of fall. And while it officially began on September 22, it seems mother nature took a little longer than usual to get the memo. Until the last week or so, most of us were walking around in t-shirts complaining about the summer-like weather. Not included in this cantankerous group, however, was my wife. MY PEOPLE...Dr. Greg DeLoachTeaching Pastor

“Those are my people.” This claim is personal, subjective. My people are not necessarily your people. My people are

farmers. My people have lived in Georgia for nearly 200 years. My people share my last name. Although I live a few hours away and I am far removed from the farm, they are still and will be always, my people. My people no doubt look and behave a bit differently than your people, because, after all, in so many ways we are all wonderfully different.

And yet we are also bound together by common ties. The kingdom of God is really about the “kin-dom” of God. When we say “First Baptist Monroe” it includes the claim that these are my people, our people. My people include members born and raised in Monroe as well as members coming from distant states (and some even drive as far away as Roswell!). My Monroe people include people we serve locally and globally as part of our missional identity.

My people are “born and bred” Baptists, Methodist transfers, Catholic converts and relocated Lutheran. Some have been a part of the church from their days toddling about in the nursery and others are brand new to the faith, with the waters of baptism still wet on their brow. These are my people. They are your people too.

We are each unique with particular preferences of traditions and worship styles, yet we all share a kinship. And in this kinship we have work to do as we “undergird the work and witness of the church as a community of faith.”

Whether a member of longstanding, or a newcomer, at FBC Monroe my people are your people and your people are my people.

Gratefully,Pastor Greg
