Parts of a Computer System

Monitor

A monitor or a display is an electronic visual display fro computers. There are three types of monitor namely:

CRT( Cathode Ray Tube )

LCD( Liquid Crystal Display)

LED( Light Emitting Diode )

System Unit

A system unit is the main body of a computerconsisting of a plastic or metal enclosure, themotherboard and the internal disk drive, a powersupply, cooling fans and whatever circuit boardsplugged into the motherboard such as video card.It is a box-like case that contains computer’selectronic components.

Keyboard

A keyboard is a human interface device which is represented aslayout of buttons. Most keyboards have a very similar layout. Thelayout of these keys is derived from the original layout of keys on atypewriter. The most widely used layout in the English languageis called QWERTY, named after the sequence of the first 6 lettersfrom the top left.

Parts Of A Keyboard

Character Keys

- these are the keys that represents the letters in the alphabet A to Z.

Modifier Keys

- these keys includes the Control and Shift Keys which modifies and/or

changes the appearance or case of the text.

Parts Of A Keyboard

Enter and Editing Keys

- these keys includes the Enter, Delete and Insert keys which will edit

the content of the document.

System and GUI Keys

- these keys includes the Windows and Apple Keys which will redirect

the user into the Start button.

Parts Of A Keyboard

Navigation Keys

- these keys includes the arrow keys (up, down, left, right) and Tab key.

This will allow the user to navigate within the document.

Parts Of A Keyboard

Function Keys

- these keys includes the F1 to F12 keys which will perform a very special

task within a particular software application.

Parts Of A Keyboard

Numeric Keypad

- these keys are located on the right side of the keyboard representing

the digits 0 to 9 and the basic arithmetic operators. Its main purpose

is for calculation.

Parts Of A Keyboard

Lock Keys

- this keys include the Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock keys.

Using Caps Lock will capitalize all the character keys. Using Num

Lock will enable and disables the user to use the numeric keypad.

Using the scroll lock enables and disables the user to use the

navigation keys in navigating the document.

Mouse

A mouse is a pointing device that allows theuser to input spatial data to a computer.

Printer

A printer is a peripheral which makes a persistent human-readable representation of graphics or text on paper or similarphysical media.

Types of Printer

1. Personal Printer

2. Networked or Shared Printer

3. Virtual Printer

4. 3D Printer

Personal Printer

Personal printers are primarily designed to supportindividual users and may be connected to only a singlecomputer.

Network Printer

Network Printers are “designed for high-volume, high speedprinting”. They are usually shared by many users on a network andcan print at speeds of 45 to around 100 ppm.

Virtual Printer

A Virtual Printer is a piece of computer software whose userinterface and API resembles that of a printer driver but which is notconnected with a physical computer printer.

3D Printer

A 3D Printer is a device for making a three-dimensional objectfrom a 3D model or other electronic data source throughadditive processes in which successive layers of material arelaid down under computer control.

Other Hardware Devices Connected to the Computer System

1. Speakers

2. Webcam

3. AVR

4. UPS

5. Microphone

6. Headset

7. Scanner

Speakers

Computer Speakers or multimedia

speakers are speakers external to a

computer that disable the lower fidelity

built-in speaker.

Webcam

A webcam is a video input device used to

digitize images or video from the outside

world into the computer.

AVR ( Automatic Voltage Regulator)

AVR helps the computer system regulates the

input flow of electricity to minimize the chances

of computer crash.

UPS( Uninterruptible Power Supply )

A UPS is typically used to protect hardware such

as computers, data centers, telecommunication

equipment and other electrical equipment from

unexpected power disruption.

Microphone

A computer microphone is a hardware

peripheral that allows a computer user to

input audio into their computers.

Headset

A headset combines a headphone with a

microphone. It is made with either a single-

earpiece (mono) or a double-earpiece (mono to

both ears or stereo). It provides the equivalent

functionality of a telephone headset but with

hands-free operation.

Scanner

A scanner is a device that captures

images from photographic prints,

posters, magazine pages, and similar

sources for computer editing and display.
