The Partnership for Families, Children and Adults is Chattanooga’s oldest and largest human services non-profit organization. Partnership has over 20 programs that provide individuals and families with the tools and resources to build stability and create independence. From children to elderly, Partnership programs impact the entire circle of life in the Greater Chattanooga area! These programs are not geared to help an individual for a day, a month or even a year. Instead, the Partnership aims to develop a lifetime of success for the most vulnerable in our community.

These two words, endless gratitude, can’t begin to express our thanks for the impact you’ve made on the lives of our Chattanooga neighbors. Each year, I write a long letter to you, our Partners, telling you about the recent accomplishments in our community. This year, instead of telling you, we’re going to show you what your donations made happen this year.

It is an honor to be part of this essential work that you made happen. As we celebrate Partnership's 137thyear, I thank you for your support and belief that together we can build a stronger, smarter and safer community. Thank you for taking the time to review Partnership’s 2013-14 Annual Report.

Dear Partners,

With greatest appreciation,Sandra Hollett, CEO, Partnership for Families, Children and Adults

STRONGER

He would call my male friends and accuse them of sleeping with me. He would tell them I cheated on him, and I lied about him. He would call my family members, telling them he wanted me back, telling them I was a bad mother.“ “

MY ABUSER MADE ME FEEL UNWANTED, UGLY, WORTHLESS. HE WOULD TELL ME NO ONE ELSE COULD LOVE ME EXCEPT HIM. I USED TO BELIEVE IT. I BELIEVED I DESERVED ABUSE. I WONDERED WHY I WASN’T GOOD ENOUGH. NOW I KNOW I AM SPECIAL. I AM STRONG, I AM WORTH SOMETHING.

He was arrested for this assault, but got out within days.  Mara took out a protective order against him, but he constantly violated it with little repercussion.  He broke into her car, took her laptop and textbooks, and even stole evidence she planned to use in the divorce proceedings.  She led complaints with law enforcement, but faced nothing but setbacks.

Mara contacted Partnership for Families, Children and Adults for help. A Partnership Victim’s Advocate arranged a meeting with a detective, and helped Mara understand all of her options moving forward – most importantly that she did not have to endure intimidation by her abuser.

Thankfully, the detective had him arrested for harassment and took the assault case to the Grand Jury, and a true bill indictment was issued. The Partnership Advocate accompanied Mara in court, oering support and encouragement when she had to face her abuser.

Now, Mara is independent and free from abuse. She has worked two jobs to be the sole providerfor her children and recently became a home owner.  Mara will graduate with her Bachelor’s Degree in social work from UTC in 2015 and plans to attend graduate school for her Masters in Social Work. She wants to work for policy change regarding victim protection and instill more eective treatment intervention for abusers within the court system.

This was not the rst time her ex-husband had harassed her. For eight long years Mara was abused and attacked. It didn’t end once Mara nally found the courage to leave him, taking their two children with her. That’s when the phone calls began:

Thanks to Partnership Investors, survivors of domestic violence like Mara are provided the support and resources they need to free themselves from the shackles of abuse.

He even attacked her faith, once mailing her a ten-page sermon about the evils of divorce and the punishment for those who commit it.  Mara proceeded with the divorce anyway, desperate to get this man out of her life for good.

During the proceedings, Mara agreed to let the children visit their father at his home.  One day, the kids said they saw their dad drunk and choking his new girlfriend. Mara had enough. She suspended visits and refused to let her ex see the kids.  He retaliated by showing up intoxicated at her house, beating her in front of the children.

DURING OUR MARRIAGE,

MADE POSSIBLE BY YOU

SMARTERKIDS = BRIGHTer FUTURESStruggling with multiple barriers, Caleb grew up without a supportive home. His parents never told him that he could achieve anything, and he took their silence to heart. When he came to Partnership’s Youth Services, Caleb was two years behind in high school and headed down a destructive path. Teachers reported him to be distracted and his school work suffered. Caleb was on the verge of giving up.

“IF I LIVED WITH MY MOM, I WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE IT WOULDN'T HAVE MATTERED TO ME." Partnership Youth Services Program provides caring, patient families for kids who otherwise wouldn’t have a chance. Thanks to your investment in Partnership, our Chattanooga youth are smarter and equipped with the tools to achieve success.

All that changed when Caleb met his Foster Mom, Sarah.  Sarah has been a veteran foster mom since 2002, and works hard to understand the needs of the kids who come through her door. She worked with Caleb to set healthy expectations. She encouraged his growth, provided guidance and nurtured his desire to achieve.  Within t ime, Caleb’s att i tude changed from indifference to determination.Today, Caleb is proud of his full year of employment, earning enough money to begin payments on a car all his own. Caleb’s proudest achievement came this past summer, when he walked across the stage to receive his diploma at high school graduation.  Through hard work and his foster mom’s support, Caleb earned a 4.0 GPA and an acceptance letter to Chattanooga State, where he is majoring in Business Administration. After the ceremony, Caleb remarked how much his attitude has changed since living with his foster family:

Spoiling grandkids, gardening, traveling; these are the things we look forward to during retirement. Lucille, a nursing assistant retired from 30 years at Memorial Hospital, wanted that too. But most of all, Lucille wanted to continue living in the home where she and her late husband had built their lives. But after financial exploitation from her daughter and physical assault from her grandson, retirement became a time of crisis. If Lucille couldn’t depend on family, then where could she turn? The Partnership’s Elder Services provided her with court advocacy, connection to resources to prevent any further abuse and healing from emotional damage.

Lucille’s Case Manager was more than just an advocate, but someone who wanted the best for her. During regular visits ensuring that Lucille remained safe, Partnership’s Case Manager noticed severe deterioration to her home from an April 2011 storm. With no money to fix the roof, the rain dripped in, causing more water damage inside the home. As the home deteriorated and with no family to help, she could only sit and watch. The bathroom rotted and mold grew throughout the house, threatening her already fragile health. Something had to be done.

Partnership’s Elder Services received a grant through the Home Depot Community Impact Program to help restore Lucille’s home. Lucille’s Case Manager, Devin McGraw dedicated his personal time and worked side-by-side with a construction expert volunteer, Wayne Moody, to finish the multiple projects. Lucille is now overjoyed with the results, “I have a beautiful bathroom now. I can’t believe how good it feels to know someone cares about me.”

This work could not be done without your Partnership investment. Because of you, Lucille is free from physical abuse, financial exploitation and now has a safer home.

“I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU ALL FOR THE HELP GIVEN TO ME IN MY TIME OF NEED. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE INVOLVED. THANK YOU.”

Family Connect ions provides supervised v is i tat ion for chi ldren to v is i t wi th the non-custodial parent in a safe, home-like environment with the mission of fostering safe, healthy parenting opportunities.

When domestic violence occurs, there is no question that the children are being harmed. Not all are harmed physically, but every child is affected emotionally. Many children have experienced trauma from domestic violence in the home and find themselves in the middle of adult issues.

When parents divorce or separate, v is i ts wi th the chi ldren may become problemat ic especially when there are safety and/or abuse issues. Partnership’s Family Connections Supervised Visitation Center helps families go through difficult or transitional times while providing a safe way for children to spend time with the non-custodial parent without being put in the middle of conflict.

“Family Connections has been a wonderful experience for my son. It has given him the opportunity to see his other parent in a safe environment. When I drop my child off for his visit, I have a peace of mind that he's going to be safe and is in a safe environment while getting some positive time with his parent. I'm glad that with the work, financesand help of many people pulling together, it is here. Thank you.” -Family Connections Mom

Founded in 1877, The Partnership for Families, Children and Adults is Chattanooga’s oldest & largest human services non profit. Partnership has over 20 programs that provide families with the tools and resources to develop stability & createindependence. We operate a shelter for victims of domestic violence, help kids through foster care and adoption, support our elderly by keeping them safe in their own homes...and much more! PFCA programs are not geared to help an individualfor a day, a month or even a year. Instead the Partnership aims to develop a lifetime of success for the most vulnerable in our community! One of the many Partnership programs that I’m passionate about is , because .
