he punishing Gold Coast streets are set to provide another gruelling Pirtek Enduro Cup finale as the V8 Supercars title race rapidly heads towards its climax.
Surfers Paradise’s challenging narrow but fast street circuit is a cruel mistress offering
plenty of pitfalls while rewarding drivers for the perfect combination of precision and speed.
The fine line of risk versus reward ensures the Gold Coast 600 could provide a fascinating twist in the championship battle.
After Red Bull Racing Australia flexed its muscles with a Bathurst 1000 win for Craig Lowndes and Steven Richards, it is expected that the stop-start Gold Coast layout will play back into the hands of Prodrive Racing.
If the prediction is correct, it will be music to the ears of Mark Winterbottom as he looks to maintain his series lead.
While another crucial step in the title race, the event also plays host to the final round of the Pirtek Enduro Cup.
Winterbottom and Owen currently lead the standings by 78 points from Garth Tander and Warren Luff, courtesy of their Sandown 500 victory and a second place finish at The Great Race.
The Prodrive pair will be favourites but the venue has proved that one small mistake can make a sizeable difference in the end result.
Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Russell Ingall following his surprise move to fill in for the injured Chaz Mostert at Prodrive Racing, alongside Cam Waters.
Ingall, who came out of retirement to deputise for the
sidelined James Courtney, faces the unique prospect of driving for the HRT and the leading Ford squads in the space of just two weeks.
The 2005 V8 Supercars champion’s stunning switch also throws focus back on Courtney who will make his first start since sustaining broken ribs and punctured lung in a freak accident at Sydney Motorsport park in August.
While his championship hopes are over, the race will be valuable for Courtney as he builds towards another title assault next year.
The event will welcome a bumper supports bill boosted by the inclusion of the Stadium Super Trucks that created a stir when they last visited Australia at the Clipsal 500.
A fleet of American and Australian drivers including Matthew Brabham, the grandson of three-time F1 world champion Jack Brabham, are set to tackle the Gold Coast streets.
Meanwhile, the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia title will be decided this weekend with Nick Foster currently 18.5 points ahead of defending champion Steven Richards.
Joining the schedule is the V8 Utes Racing Series and the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship.

1The Castrol Gold Coast 600 will see Russell Ingall become the first man in the history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship to start 250 rounds.
2Ingall has made a shock switch from Holden to Ford, having
raced with the factory Holden Racing Team less than a fortnight ago! The 2005 V8 Supercars Champion last raced a Falcon at Phillip Island in 2007 and won his sole championship crown in 2005 driving a Falcon for Stone Brothers Racing.
5The Saturday race at the Castrol Gold Coast 600 will mark a
special milestone – the 900th race held in Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercars Championship history.
3Other milestones include Team BOC’s Jason Bright
starting his 226th round and equalling John Bowe for fourth on the all-time championship starts list, and carsales’ Todd Kelly start his 212th round and equal the late Peter Brock for seventh place in the record book.

Red Bull Racing Australia has won the lion’s share of the races held in that time with 40 wins to Prodrive Racing Australia’s 27 (including two to Rod Nash Racing) followed by Brad Jones Racing (eight), Holden Racing Team and TEKNO Autosports (seven), Garry Rogers Motorsport (six), Erebus Motorsport (two) and Dick Johnson Racing and Nissan Motorsport (one each).

Circuit Description
The Gold Coast Street Circuit is a high speed, concrete-lined, thrill ride that was shortened for the new look event in 2010 by around 1.5 kilometres. The temporary street track has proven to create
carnage in the past, particularly when drivers don’t show the patience required for victory, so the co-drivers a this year’s event will have to tread carefully.
2014 Highlight: Shane van Gisbergen and Jonathon Webb produced a flawless drive to secure a victory just two weeks after being cruelly denied a shot at victory at Bathurst.
