Dear Y Friends,

Each year, as we gather together in

February to celebrate the impact of

the YMCA of South Hampton Roads,

we realize how blessed we are to have

achieved much and are humbled by the

dedication we see all year long from our

members, donors, volunteers, community

organizations and staff. In 2016, the Y

delivered on the promise to strengthen

the foundations of our communities. We

found innovative ways to transform lives

and build up our neighbors through initia-

tives and programs that focus on youth

development, healthy living and social

responsibility. As Helen Keller so power-

fully put it: “Alone we can do so little,

together we can do so much.”

We are pleased to report that in 2016 we

truly partnered for a better us. Here are a

few of our highlights:

Last October, we held our first

LIVESTRONG® at the Y class at the

Hilltop Family YMCA, where cancer sur-

vivors discovered strength in themselves

and support in each other. This twelve-

week program is offered at no cost to

survivors and will continue impacting

those living with and beyond cancer in

2017 as classes expand into Norfolk.

Medical partnerships helped to change

the lives of those suffering from chronic

diseases, including the 220 people who

participated in the Y’s Diabetes Preven-

tion Program. Through preventative and

clinical programs like this, participants

find strength to recapture their health

and independence.

Over 19,000 camper weeks resulted in

the best summer yet as campers explored

the world around them. Whether it’s at

YMCA Camp Silver Beach, The First Tee

of Hampton Roads, YMCA Camp Red

Feather, YMCA Camp Arrowhead or day

camps at our family centers, kids discov-

ered a healthy sense of independence and

formed friendships that last a lifetime.

With the help of 36 community

organizations and nearly 700 volunteers,

The Y’s Togetherhood® program

continued to bring people together to

perform community service projects like

feeding families during the holidays and

preparing teens for life after high school.

We continued to provide assistance to

keep the Y open to all, and by enhancing

our Open Doors membership assistance

program, over 1 in 4 individuals and fami-

lies have access to the Y.

Fun and fitness met as the Y partnered

with MacArthur Center to bring group

exercise to the community through the

Traveling Y. This free summer-long event

brought the Y’s mission outside our

four walls. The Traveling Y continues its

emphasis on healthy living with 26 sched-

uled events in 2017.

Our 2020 Strategic Plan focuses on

improving academic performance through

tutoring programs and addressing sum-

mer learning loss through programs like

the Power Scholars Academy and camp

curriculums designed around year-long

learning. Our Y helped over 1,900 chil-

dren at 26 sites improve their academic

performance. Teens continued to be

inspired and develop leadership skills

through Leaders Clubs and Counselor-in-

Training programs.

To our members, donors, community

organizations, volunteers and staff—

thank you. Transformational partnerships

drive positive change, and our annual

report, annualreport.ymcashr.org,

reminds us of all of the amazing things

that can be achieved when we all work

together to foster a better us.

Sincerely,

Dudley Ware Association Board Chair YMCA South Hampton Roads

Billy George President & CEO YMCA of South Hampton Roads

Tracy Temple ALBEMARLE FAMILY YMCA Tracy Temple is an Elizabeth City native and sophomore at the College of the Albemarle, completing a Fine Arts degree in Drama. A friend, Rick Anderson, inspired Tracy to join the Togetherhood® team at the Albemarle Family YMCA and now he says this Y volunteer program has changed his life completely. He uses his innate skills and talents to shine a light on the needs in our community. Tracy says it’s such a good feel-ing to use what God has given him to help those in need.

Cri Ridley BLOCKER NORFOLK FAMILY YMCA Cri is a Teen Leaders Club Coordinator supporting Norfolk teens aged 12–17. She leads their involvement and volunteerism in projects like the Norfolk Grand Illumination Parade, Virginia Beach Shamrock Marathon and the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA’s 2016 Togetherhood® project. She also sup-ports youth development as a YMCA Camp Red Feather counselor in the summer and before & after-school counselor during the academic year. Cri creates a comfortable environment for the teens to learn and grow by listening to their needs, leveraging their interests and nurturing their strengths.

Linwood Gordon CURRITUCK FAMILY YMCA Linwood played sports for several years through the Currituck County Parks & Recreation program and brought his experi-ence to the Y. He volunteers his time and expertise to teach preschool-aged children skills, teamwork and sportsmanship through youth sports. Linwood’s patient nature is the perfect match with Currituck’s after-school program. The children light up when they see him because he always creates a fun, engaging environment. At 16, Linwood has finished high school early and is already working on his Associates Degree. He is an excellent role model and mentor for youth development at the Y.

John O’Brien EASTERN SHORE FAMILY YMCA A retired New Jersey State Police officer, John and his wife Roxanne moved to the Eastern Shore in 2015. Not long after join-ing the Y, John became more than a member. A long-time soccer player and coach, John

brought his passion for the game to the Y’s youth soccer program. He is a powerful role model and inspiration for children, teaching them skills to play with confidence and giv-ing each child the opportunity to shine. Both John and Roxanne support the Y’s Annual Campaign, offering disadvantaged children an opportunity to engage in sports to learn the Y’s core values through the game of soccer. Their uplifting presence, continued volunteerism and involvement in the Y’s mission to serve make it possible for the Y to continue offering quality youth programs to the community.

Sarah Wray EFFINGHAM STREET FAMILY YMCA A Norfolk native and Maury High School alum, Sarah Wray went on to VCU, graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice concentrating on juvenile justice. This path started Sarah working with at-risk youth. After working for years with youth in foster care, in shelters and on probation, she joined the Tidewater Youth Services Commission. In her work with the Commis-sion, she facilitates the Girls Circle Group to promote resilience in young women through a safe, caring environment that allows girls to build self-confidence, authenticity in relationships and enhanced judgement. Partnering with Sharla Slupski, Sarah con-sistently leads a Girls Circle Group at the Y’s after-school program. Her work with young girls in this program will build strong women of tomorrow.

Christian Basnight GREAT BRIDGE/HICKORY FAMILY YMCA Christian was born and raised in Great Bridge and has been a member of the Y since it opened. His passion for the Redskins and Hokies comes to life when he volunteers to coach youth sports at the Y. From soccer to flag football, he’s collected more than a dozen coach’s plaques through his service. Christian is inspired by the children he’s coached who remember him and his impact years later. The first team he coached for the Y are now sophomores in high school, many still involved in sports. The Y builds relationships and strengthens the community through volunteers like Christian. His service and dedication to youth is something that neither he nor the children he’s coached will ever forget.

Everett Browning GREENBRIER FAMILY YMCA Everett has been part of the Y for many years and volunteers his time with the Teen Leaders Club program. He has been part of Leaders Club since he was in middle school and this past June received his six-year jacket from the Blue Ridge Leaders School. Everett’s guidance of teen leaders assures they stay on track throughout the school-year, gaining experience, confidence, and leadership skills. Each year, he helps recruit future leaders to the program assuring the Y continues to provide transformational experiences to teens.

Janice Martin GREENBRIER NORTH YMCA WELLNESS & RACQUETBALL CENTER Janice is a retired registered nurse living and volunteering in Chesapeake. The Y has benefited from her desire to give back to her home community through service. She has volunteered for many events, including the Greenbrier North Together-hood® event, Life After High School, where teens were provided expert help from local organizations to build their resume, learn interviewing tips and be prepared for life after high school. Janice has a love for youth, challenging herself to focus on assuring all people have equal opportunities for success.

Craig Allen HILLTOP FAMILY YMCA Craig has been a long-time Y member and volunteer for the Hilltop Family YMCA board of directors. His advocacy for the Y in the Hilltop community is unparalleled. He shares his passion for the Y with the Hilltop community, telling the Y’s story of serv-ing all through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Because of his dedication to philanthropy, many kids receive scholarship assistance to attend YMCA Camp Caretta and before-and-after care at the Hilltop Family YMCA.

Arun Raju INDIAN RIVER FAMILY YMCA Arun has been part of the Y in the capacity of an employee, member or board member since 2009. In 2016, Arun volunteered to be the committee chair for our first year of Togetherhood® projects. He successfully led by recruiting the committee, planning logis-

tics and guiding volunteers in delivering three Togetherhood® projects last year. Through his service, hundreds of families, women and children of domestic violence received bless-ing bags filled with critical day-to-day needs. Arun’s dedication as a member, volunteer and community leader inspires others to do more and be more.

Joe Misseri JAMES L. CAMP, JR. FAMILY YMCA The passion to make a difference and a love for soccer led Joe Misseri to serve as a youth sports coach for the last 10 years. Joe played soccer in Italy as a child, and when his children became old enough to play, Joe started coaching them at the Y. Today, Joe shares his passion for the game volunteering to coach the children of Franklin. His players are family, and often when they see him they run up for a hug. As the children continue developing their skills and potential through sports, Joe is there to build and share in their growth, encouraging them to do their best and have fun. Some of the kids he coached years ago now play alongside him in the Y’s adult league, giving him the opportunity to continue mentoring them as young adults.

Anthony Cheracles MT. TRASHMORE FAMILY YMCA Anthony generously shares his time as a youth sports coaching basketball and soccer. With or without his children participating, he provides energetic and positive guid-ance with a special knack to really reach the children on a level that is truly impactful. His playful nature comes to life as he dresses in team-themed costumes, showing the children how learning, sports, fun, and the Y’s values come together. The Mt. Trashmore Y family knows and adores Anthony for his thoughtful conversation, listening ear and commitment to building up children in our community.

Phil Wolfe OUTER BANKS FAMILY YMCA Phil Wolfe, a Fire Captain for the Town of Nags Head donated many hours and resources to make last summer’s camp experience for the children truly their best summer yet. He designed and constructed a camper organizational system; donated games, snacks, and water activities; jumped in to help with set-up and clean-up of camp activities; and offered campers a unique experience touring a Nags Head Fire Depart-

ment fire truck. His dedication to supporting the Y’s summer camp never ceased through-out the entire season. Phil celebrated the end of summer with campers and Y family by sponsoring an end-of-season pizza party. It is through the dedication of Phil’s time, funding and passion that the summer camp program continues to provide experiences that last a lifetime.

Steve Pniewski PRINCESS ANNE FAMILY YMCA Steve Pniewski is the Princess Anne Family YMCA founding Board Chairperson, a Youth Sports Coach and active early-morning member. Steve has guided the Princess Anne Board’s creation and development. He played an integral role in our first Togetherhood® project that provided over 100 at-risk pre-school children with summer meals. Steve, or Coach Ski as the kids call him, coached two basketball teams during our inaugural season and led our Middle School team to a 2nd place victory in the end of season tourna-ment. In all of his actions, Steve embodies an altruistic volunteer spirit that makes our Y better every day.

Ryan Harrell SUFFOLK FAMILY YMCA Ryan is a volunteer who graciously gives his time, talents, and love to the Suffolk Family YMCA and YMCA Camp Arrowhead programs, never asking anything in return. Steadfast and loyal volunteers like Ryan provide the foundational support needed to impact the lives of members and campers. His selfless giving and constant advocacy is a blessing to the Y.

Laura Zemaitis TAYLOR BEND FAMILY YMCA Laura’s first involvement with the Y was 13 years ago as a youth sports coach. She soon joined the staff team where she met her husband Jason. After leaving the area and returning to Hampton Roads, they rejoined the Y. Since then Laura and Jason have had four children—Caroline, Christian, Connor and Corin. Although life is busy, Laura con-tinues to volunteer. Her dedication assured the new playground installation was a suc-cess, and she has returned to her roots as a volunteer coach for several sports programs, facilitated a water bottle collection to sup-port homeless people for the last six years, and organized a Thanksgiving food drive. As

grateful as the Y is for Laura’s service, Laura is grateful the Y affords her the opportunity to serve and love others.

Jessica Thornton THE FIRST TEE OF HAMPTON ROADS For the past three years, Jessica has added to her impressive volunteer resumé by assisting with Life Skills certification classes. Focusing on the mission of The First Tee, Jessica serves as a coach, mentor, role model and support system. A high school golfer and exceptional student at Norfolk Acad-emy, Jessica inspires young golfers to be the best they can be both on and off the course. Jessica’s energy, enthusiasm and positive attitude is infectious. Her dedication to our mission is inspiring to watch and exciting to witness. Jessica is proof that a young coach with a huge heart can profoundly impact the new generation of golfers.

Hilary Gersbach THE Y ON GRANBY It’s truly special when the expertise of a volunteer delivers nearly 40 years of nursing experience and over 20 years as an educator to a Y program. Hilary engaged her Norfolk State University students through the Y’s after-school programs in Norfolk. Under her leadership, students have been taught practical lessons in bullying, healthy living, substance abuse, pool safety, gun safety, food security, stranger danger, and safe cycling. Aspiring NSU grads deliver powerful lessons to students and send home informa-tion for parents. Hilary brings such a valuable component to the child care program that is needed in our community.

Dr. Robert & Mrs. Babs Neff YMCA CAMP SILVER BEACH Bob and Babs Neff have been long-time, devoted volunteers. Babs’ love and passion for children led her to YMCA Camp Silver Beach where she has been a board member for eight years. While they support many charities, she and Bob give selflessly to Camp Silver Beach. They have personally supported our fundraising efforts as well as recruited others. Each year, they host a marvelous event at their home to share the impact and raise awareness of Camp Silver Beach. The Neff’s vibrant support affords children the opportunity to experience the wonder of camp who otherwise wouldn’t be able to go.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGNCapital contributions are the cornerstone of the YMCA: generous individuals, corporations and foundations coming together in service and partnership for our community. Thanks to your support, we have strengthened neighborhoods in Norfolk and have become pilot projects for a comprehensive community-wide aquatics program in Virginia Beach with Tide Swimming. The Y on Granby and the Princess Anne Family YMCA are great examples of our commitment to react and respond to the needs of our communities through new locations.

Our future projects are equally remarkable and the Board of Directors would like to thank and acknowledge the following partnerships with Virginia Wesleyan College, The Williams School, Sentara Healthcare, Trinity Church and New Beginnings Church. These partners bring more than just added features and functionality to buildings or projects—they are helping your Y change the lives of children, of people with transitional health issues and are helping to bring a community together that may never have had the health or spiritual opportunity that they have today. The Y’s out - of - the - box outlook is a shining example that we can do more with others. From the renovation and expansion projects at the Suffolk and Hilltop family centers , or building summer camps on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College or off of Battlefield Blvd., the Y proves that power of partnerships can create a positive environment for organizations to work together and walk hand in hand into the future for the benefit of our community.
