Situation of tunnel fire detection in Europe 1

� Linear heat detectors are proved as a safe and reliable method for fire detection in tunnels. They are indispensible for the automatic triggering of

• Fire ventilation routines

• Tunnel closure (traffic lights / barrier)

• Escape route signalisation

� To trigger automatic extinguishing systems, a dual detector dependency or the combination of two independent detection systems is recommended

� Linear heat detectors fulfil the actual requirementsfor reaction speed even at air velocity of 10 m/sec


Situation of tunnel fire detection in Europe 2

� Smoke detectors / visibility monitors should be used for early fire detection (already mandatory in D, CH)

� With sufficient experience for thresholds and cross-sensitivities an automatic triggering by smoke detectors should be possible (today mostly manual)

� Video analysis might make sense in tunnels with a high risk potential, as they use additional criteria for detection

� Due to the high false alarm rate, it may not be used for automatic detection

Importance of fast detection

� Avoiding fatalities in tunnel fires is mainly driven by self rescue

� Simulations show that the number of fatalities is proportional to the detection time of the fire (or in fact to the time informing the users and their reaction)
