Note from our Chair: Thomas Roser

The funding of the 2017 Omnibus bill allows us to run RHIC until the end of June. Presently a low energy gold-gold run in RHIC can run inparallel with the Coherent electron Cooling experiment in IR2.

The next run of RHIC will focus on measuring the difference of ruthenium on ruthenium collisions and zirconium on zirconium collisions.Ruthenium and zirconium have the same number of nucleons and therefore the same atomic weight but have a different number of protons andtherefore a different electric charge. The different charge means that the magnetic field during the collisions is also different. The comparison ofthe two systems will determine whether and how a magnetic field affects the quark-gluon plasma created during the collision. There are strongindications from previous runs at RHC that it will and a clear confirmation at the next RHIC run would be another major discovery at RHIC.

Note from Business operations: Sue Pankowski

Once again the Federal budgets are big news with the President's FY2018 Budget Request released within the past few weeks. This is the start ofthe process for FY2018 (which doesn't officially begin until October 1, 2017), and things can be expected to change as the budget is negotiatedby the House and Senate. As the process unfolds in the coming months, I encourage everyone to focus on their work in the safe and effectivemanner that has become our trademark. From a financial standpoint, please continue to exercise prudence in your spending decisions.

Note from our Accelerator Division: Wolfram Fischer

RHIC completed the Run-17 main program with polarized protons at 255 GeV on 30 May 2017, meeting the polarization goals and exceeding theintegrated luminosity goals. This year the new requirement was to have leveled luminosity, which comes as close as possible to being flat.Congratulations to the Run Coordinator, Vahid Ranjbar, and the whole team. Greg Marr has now taken over the Run Coordinator position for theAu+Au part at 27.2 GeV/nucleon, and after a short setup period, we are running stably and are on track to meet STARs experimental goals. Nextweek another change will follow when we return to 255 GeV polarized protons for a special setup with large beam colliding. While the luminositywill be lower, the angular spread of the colliding beams is greatly reduced - an important feature for the RHICf experiment.

The Linac repaired tank 6 in a few days, and we are now running again at 180 MeV for RaDIATE collaboration, which investigates radiationdamage in materials, while concurrently producing medical isotopes.

Note from our Experimental Support & Facilities Division: Bill Christie

The ongoing RHIC run is going well. The highest priority for this year's Physics program is a 510 GeV transversely polarized proton-protondata set requested for the STAR program. "Physics running" was declared for the accumulation of this multi-faceted data set on February23rd, and some of the key, central detector related, parts of this data set are just starting to reach their goals. There are a number of forwarddetector related data set goals that got a later start due to the need to commission and calibrate some new systems for this year that still have aways to go, but from the projections it looks like we should reach them before the end of the proton running in May, before we switch toheavy ion running.

Throughout the run this year you've all likely heard that, as we don't know what the budget is for Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, and hence we don'tknow how long the RHIC run will last. As of last Friday there is a Federal Budget for FY 2017. The indications are that when BNL gets itsbudget for this year that it will support a 21 cryo week RHIC run. This past week, we've put together a plan/schedule for the remainder of therun, which has the run ending, and the cryogenics plane shut down, in the morning on Monday July third. You can find the final schedule forthe current RHIC run online at the following link:http://www.c-ad.bnl.gov/esfd/operatingschedules/CAD_operation_FY17.pdf

What you'll see if you look at the schedule s that we'll be running the top energy proton program until the morning of May 30th, at whichpoint we'll stop running the protons, and switch over to low energy gold on gold (Au) running. At this point the LINAC will be able to gooffline for about a week or so to repair an issue that is preventing it from running a program that we are committed to running this year,

known as Radiate. Once the repair is completed this program will be run.

On June 21st, we'll end the low energy AuAu program and transition back to the full energy polarized proton program, this time with radially (i.e. proton spin pointing inthe horizontal, versus the current vertical, plane) polarized beams for what's known as the RHICf experimental program. RHICf is a forward detector that will reside in thelocation of the West (7:00 side) Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) of STAR. The primary purpose of this experiment is to gather data on the forward going particle crosssections for use to calibrate Cosmic Ray shower models, but it has a secondary goal of trying to study the transverse momentum (Pt) dependence of a single spinasymmetry that was observed by the PHENIX experiment in an earlier run.One can find the day to day schedule for the rest of this year's run online at the following Web link:http://www.c-ad.bnl.gov/esfd/Christie_W/May_june_21wks_v2_sched_only.pdfAs the run progresses some of the details of this schedule may change a bit as deemed prudent, but we'll be trying to follow this for the remainder of the run.

Note from Operations: Paul Sampson

The Polarized Proton Physics run was successfully completed on May 30th. After quickly changing over to Au-Au Physics, the collideris running well for the STAR and CeC PoP experiments. The gold run will continue to the 21st of June at which time RHIC will beswitched back to Polarized proton mode for fRHIC running, followed by APEX and diode testing before run 17 ends at the end of June.

Progress commissioning LEReC components and beam continues. Installation work at both CeC and LEReC continues during times ofaccess and scheduled maintenance.

NSRL run 17B will begin the week of May 29th and continue until the 20th of June. The Galactic Cosmic Ray Simulator system hasbeen tested for and development and improvement continues.

Repairs to LINAC MOD 6 were completed on schedule and the 180 MeV BLIP run commenced on June 6th. The BLIP program was interrupted for 6 days while thisrepair was done and will continue at various energies until the end of the month.

The final scheduled maintenance will be held on June 14th and APEX will be conducted during the final RHIC Cryo week. Final schedules will be determined at weeklyscheduling meetings.

Note from our MEDICAL ISOTOPE RESEARCH & PRODUCTION PROGRAM: Cathy Cutler

Dr. Leonard Mausner has announced his intention to retire with July 28th being his last day at BNL. He will continue to do consulting work forthe DOE and be involved in the Nuclear and Radiochemistry Summer School (NCSS) at BNL. The BLIP name has become synonymous withLeonard Mausner who has spent over 36 years upgrading and enhancing its capabilities along with those of target processing laboratories atbuilding 801. We owe a great deal of gratitude to Leonard for his leadership at BNL in maintaining and improving the isotope productionfacilities and developing targetry and production methods for products that are currently used in hundreds of thousands of patients each year. Many of the upgrades he has developed at BNL have been copied and utilized at other facilities around the world. Further he has been a strongadvocate of the NCSS in which he served as Treasurer for the Nuclear Chemistry section of the ACS and championed the program at BNL.Leonard was recently recognized at the recent Society of Nuclear Medicine meeting by the DOE Office of Science for his efforts in which hewas awarded a plaque. Attached is a picture of Leonard receiving the award and a link to the brief presentation highlighting some of hisaccomplishments at BNL. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Leonard for under his leadership the program has grown and becomeworld renowned. Please take time over the next month to thank Leonard and wish him well as he moves on to spend more time with his familyand his second love the French horn.
