Real Projects.Every City Council Member has somemoney or “capital” projects in theirdistrict. That’s money or physicalimprovements that beneft the public.

The money can be used or things like:—rebuilding a street;— renovating a park;— installing benches, street lamps,bike racks, or trash cans;

— repairing buildings like schools, community centers, police and fre

stations; or— buying computers or equipment orschools.

I you have ideas about how things couldwork better in your community, this is

your chance to make those projectshappen.

Neighborhood Assemblies

In October and November, there will be

several meetings in each district, andanyone that wants to can participate. This is where you and other communitymembers propose project ideas andpriorities. How would you like to see$1 million used in your community?

Delegate Meetings

During the neighborhood assemblies, you can volunteer to be a delegate. Overthe winter, delegates will work togetherto develop real project proposals and

fgure out actual project costs (with somehelp rom city agencies).

Delegates will present their proposals inthe spring, and you can give eedbackon the projects beore they’re put on the

ballot or voting.

Voting

In the spring, you (and anyone else thatlives in the district) will get to vote orthe projects you think should get unded. You can vote or more than one project, and the projects with the most votes willbe included in the ull City budget.

Construction

City agencies will build or implement theselected projects in the next ew years. You’ll get to enjoy the improvements, andhopeully participate in uture rounds oparticipatory budgeting.

Come to an assembly, be a delegate, or just come out to vote in the spring. YOUCAN PARTICIPATE A LITTLE OR A LOT,BUT DON’T MISS THE CHANCE TO MAKEYOUR VOICE HEARD!

Why It Matters. This isn’t business as usual. Participatorybudgeting puts real power over real moneyin the hands o regular people. It’s a chanceto get the improvements you want to see inyour community.

Participatory budgeting is already workingin Chicago and over 1,000 cities aroundthe world, but it’s a new approach in NewYork City – i it works well and lots o peopleparticipate this year, it could be adoptedor other public budgets, too, like education, transportation, or community development.

Make sure your voice is heard and helpmake participatory budgeting the new way odoing things in New York City.
