The ASEAN SME AcademyIn March 2014, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the US-ASEAN Business Council (US-ABC) launched the US-ASEAN Business Alliance for Competitive Small and Medium Enterprises (Business Alliance). This innovative public-private partnership, has trained over 4,000 small and medium enterprise (SME) owners utilizing the world-class expertise offered by US-ABC corporate members in areas such as Marketing and Business Management, Finance, Legal, Logistics, and Information Technology. The Business Alliance partners have now also developed an online training tool, the ASEAN SME Academy (Academy), that will reach many more SMEs.
The core of the Academy is a series of training materials for SMEs from Fortune 500 companies. In addition, the Academy incorporates training materials focused on SMEs from regional arms and international organizations. This curated set of courses is part of a larger program to provide training and mentorship to enhance ASEAN SME’s access to financial products, regional and international markets, information and advisory services, and technology and innovation.
The Academy also contains business information that is particularly relevant for regional SMEs, providing access to a curated directory of service providers to whom they can reach out for financial advice, corporate programs and networking.
The Academy will provide a calendar of events to give users more information about trainings from the Business Alliance and business development services in the region. In the near future, the Academy will also house online forums for SMEs in ASEAN to share experiences on common issues, identifying best practice and replicating excellence to create scale and momentum.
Users of the Academy will develop a user profile when first logging on to facilitate users’ access to materials special to their industry and links to existing business support.
The information and resources will be selectively translated into the local languages to expand the group of arms that can benefit from the Academy.

US-ASEAN Business Alliance for Competitive Small and Medium Enterprises
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) fulfill an important role in the economies of Southeast Asia. They account for more than 96 percent of all enterprises and for between 50 to 95 percent of all employment in many Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member States. ASEAN is committed to promoting SME development as a key mechanism for increasing growth, reducing poverty and improving equity.
INNOVATIVE PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP The most recent expression of the U.S. government’s commitment to supporting SMEs in the region is the three-year US-ASEAN Business Alliance for Competitive SMEs. It was launched on March 4, 2014, by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), in collaboration with the U.S. Mission to ASEAN and US-ASEAN Business Council through its ASEAN Committee, led by Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble and United Parcel Service.
The Alliance mobilizes the resources of major U.S. corporations and USAID, particularly its ASEAN Trade and Investment Connectivity project, to support two main objectives. The first is to support the efforts of ASEAN SMEs to become more competitive in domestic markets and to take better advantage of opportunities provided by the ASEAN Economic Community. The second is to support the efforts of high-performance SMEs to become regional business leaders and world-class suppliers in the global value chains in their own right.

PROMOTING INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT A special emphasis of the Alliance is to bring about greater economic inclusion of women and young entrepreneurs to advance broad-based, sustainable regional economic growth and prosperity. The Alliance will provide information and skills development training and connect participants with business professionals around the world. Moreover, women and young entrepreneurs will be screened for business talent and leadership development activities.
STRATEGIC IMPLEMENTATION The Business Alliance strengthens and diversifies the human and institutional base of SMEs to improve their financial track record and bankability as well as their potential and opportunities to participate in regional and global production chains. The Alliance will also work with providers of business development services to build their capabilities, local resource supplies and services in order to reach the broadest range of SMEs as possible. These services will be complemented by the ASEAN Online SME Academy, a cloud-based training resource that SMEs and service providers can use to further enhance their skills and understanding of markets and marketing. This online platform provides region-specific and customized information and dedicated training materials and tools. Academy resources are also available in multimedia formats and translated into local languages for greater use.
By encouraging dialogue, the alliance will help improve public and private sector bodies in the ASEAN business and policy environment, lower the costs of doing business and increase the region’s comparative advantage as a trade and investment partner. Highlight of April 2016
“SMEs in ASEAN are a critical part of the economy which will continue to power Southeast Asia in the years to come.” Alexander FeldmanUS-ASEAN Business Council President
