Trend of Biocomposite Applications in Engineering

Sharuddin bin Mahzan @ Mohd Zin

Faculty of Engineering and Manufacturing Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia

Recent advancement in materials and engineering technology have encouraged many scholars from around the world to

investigate and applied materials in engineering applications. Apart from improving its material characteristics, several other areas including the design, type of materials and many others have been explored to suit the demand and requirements of certain engineering applications. This talk is conducted to give some insights on this specific area especially involving bio-natural composites. The introduction of natural fibres and natural based resources has been

highlighted by other scholars. This presentation is mainly focused on the trend of bio composite application especially on the engineering applications. This includes the use of bio composites as sound absorber, vibration absorber and many others. It is hoped that the talks would gave some beneficial information towards implementing natural resources in our daily life.

Recent developments in CFD: an Immersed Boundary Method

for Compressible Fluid Dynamics

Marco Talice PMSQUARED Engineering s.r.l.s v. S. Sonnino, 99 Cagliari, Italy

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was “officially” born at the end of the last century (1960s) when simple (in todays view) linear potential problems have been solved via the use of computers. From that moment on, thanks to the advance in numerical methods on one side, and to the fast growth of computing power on the other side, CFD has been used to

tackle more and more complex problems both from “physics” and “geometric” standpoints. Grid generation (the first step in the CFD work-flow) has soon become a very “expensive” part of the simulation process. In the last decade of the past century, the idea of Immersed Boundary (firstly developed by Vieceli and then by Peskin for heart simulation) was re-discovered. As the name suggests, all complexities related to the grid generation process are de facto taken away and

the geometry of interest is instead simply “immersed” into a Cartesian grid. In order to still being able to properly describe the mutual interaction between the fluid and the immersed body, “something” must then be done to link together these two separated world (the body and the Cartesian grid). This work will present the development of one “flavor” of this class of numerical techniques into the compressible flow solver IBraptor.

Keyword: CFD, Immersed boundary layer, compressible, fluid dynamics.
