The Rescue Report

February is traditionally the month that we report the statistics for the previous year to our local supporters and to the National Rescue Committee (NRC). This effort causes us to both look back at the previous year(s) and look forward to what the future holds. I can tell you that the num-bers reported 10 years ago did not prompt the discussion that recent numbers have caused. This is, in my opinion, because current trends will result in significant changes in Rescue in the not too dis-tant future.

Virtually all Golden Retriever Rescue groups across the country are experiencing a reduction in their

intake numbers and EGRR is no exception. In 2014, we took in 31 dogs – 3 fewer than in 2013 or a 10% drop which is not that much. However, if we look at our intake numbers over the span of several years, a more significant trend becomes apparent – from 56 dogs in 2010 to 31 dogs in 2014 – almost half as many dogs. Nationally, in 2010 a total of 8,742 Golden Retrievers were accepted by the reporting Rescue groups and in 2013, this number dropped to 6,274 which is approximately a 28% reduction. Even more impressive is the amount of money spent by all reporting rescue groups on veterinary expenses which was $5,249,630 in 2010 and $5,699,929 in 2013. Translated to a per dog expenditure, it went from $600 per dog in 2010 to over $900 per dog in 2013. EGRR’s financial statistics are similar with our vet expense per dog running a little over $400 in 2010 and about $900 per dog in 2014. National statistics for 2014 will not be available until April.

I expect this trend to continue. Many if not most people who want to rehome their dog do it via Craig’s

list because it allows them to charge for the dog. Those that don’t go that route can easily find a new home for their dog via “word of mouth” or Facebook. Shelters do not want to turn over a healthy and very adoptable dog to Rescue preferring to place the dog themselves so that they can get both the adoption fee and the satis-faction that goes with the placement. That leaves the old and the medically or behaviorally challenged dogs for Rescue.

So far 2015 has started off in the same pattern. No dogs in January and in February to date we have

taken in 3 dogs – 5 year old Molly with untreated seizures, 8 year old Hailey, who has clearly been neglected and who just saw the vet today so we don’t yet know her health status and 3 year old Harley who is, I’m thrilled to report, a healthy, normal boy! One out of three – that is a pretty accurate snapshot of Rescue as we know it today.

Nancy Kiesler Volunteer, EGRR Western Regional Rep, NRC

The primary focus of Evergreen Golden Retriever

Rescue (EGRR) is on rescuing Golden Retrievers in

need. Driven by our belief in responsible pet ownership,

we are dedicated to ensuring for dogs such as these a

EGRC Member Gloria Kaczmarski suggested sharing this Facebook page with EGRC members. Thank you, Gloria! There is a group on Facebook that wants to create an informal registry for Ichthyosis, plus provide education and updates about this genetic condition that affects Golden Retrievers. The group originated in Germany and a lot of the entries are in German, but almost anybody there speaks English. I was contacted by some-one from California after my post, so the worldwide 'thing' is working. On the right side under 'ABOUT' is their mission statement in German, followed by the English translation which I copied and pasted for you below: The purpose of this group is to inform about Ichthyosis and make breeders easier to plan matings with re-gard to Ichthyosis – for more health in Golden Retrievers. With the help of the breeders, we create lists of Ichthyosis-free, Ichthyosis-carrier and Ichthyosis-affected Golden Retrievers in breeding, separately for male and female. We also list separately males and females of the young dogs who were tested Ichthyosis-free and perhaps go later in breeding. These lists and all information about Ichthyosis are available for responsible use to the members of this group. Important! We are NOT for the exclusion of Ichthyosis-affected dogs from breeding! That is not possible because the gene pool with only about 20% Ichthyosis-clear dogs in Europe. We ask the breeders to test Golden Retriev-ers on Ichthyosis and for the useful mating of dogs with the aim to breed more Ichthyosis-clear progeny, so that the Ichthyosis-problem reduces. We hope for many breeders who support us in our project and will work with the information and data we have collected!

One downside with them is we will have to go to ID and pick up the birds. The local clubs who use the same trailer as we do will have a meeting on 2/7/2015 and discuss and decide what to do about the bird problem and all will work together to come up with a solution. The group will also discuss other items of mutual interest to all the local test giving clubs.
