Make time for part-time learning

If you are considering studying a part-time or Higher Education course, this guide highlights the range of courses we will be offering from September 2015 into 2016.

Here at Hartlepool College we offer a range of programmes carefully selected to meet local employer and applicant needs. Because of this, we make every effort to ensure there is a programme for every type of learner.

We also know that coming back into College can be daunting for some, so we offer a range of courses from short, confidence-building courses to work-based qualifications and longer, industry-recognised and Degree-level programmes.

Throughout this guide you can see the very real and positive changes education can have on people’s lives through a handful of the many thousands of success stories Hartlepool College is privileged to play a part in. Hopefully they will inspire you to “be the next”.

The College also houses a dedicated support team, available to help you through your studies.

Based adjacent to our main reception, the Student Services team can support you with initial course information, advice on study and progression and careers guidance.

They can also support you with financial aspects via our dedicated bursary team, ensuring that loans, grants and other costs are clearly explained so you can focus on your learning. In many cases there is funding or a loan available to support your learning or training at the College. The Student Services team are available on the following days/times:

If you are starting a further education course at Level 3 or above you will either have to pay for the course yourself or apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to pay for your tuition fees. With this loan there are no upfront fees and you will pay nothing for your education until you complete your course and earn over £21,000 per year.

Information regarding prices and fees

The minimum loan will be £300 for up to four courses.

Funding your studies

To qualify for an Advanced Learning Loan (ALL) you must be:

• Aged 24 or over on the first day of your course (there is no upper age limit);

• Starting your course on or after 1st August 2015;

• Living in the UK for at least three years before this date;

• Enrolling on a course at Level 3 or above, for example Access to HE Diplomas, BTEC Subsidiary Extended Diplomas etc.

Courses that qualify for the 24+ Learning Loan are highlighted in this guide where this additional fee exists. Information on the loan can be found at www.hartlepoolfe.ac.uk/24plus

The loan is provided by the government via Student Finance England (SFE) to cover the cost of your tuition fees. The loans do not take your household income into account and you will not be subject to a credit check.

You don’t have to pay any fees upfront so in this sense you will receive free education at the point of delivery. You won’t have to pay anything back until you complete your course and your income is over £21,000. If studying an Access course and you progress to university and graduate, the government will remove the 24+ loan from your student finance records, effectively giving you the course for free.

For more information on Student Finance please visit www.gov.uk/student-finance or get in touch with our Student Services team through the contact details on the page opposite.

Please note all financial information is correct at time of print.

...Carpenter & Joiner,like Tommy Johnson

Tommy Johnson, 35, left school at the age of 16, keen to start earning money. It was a decision that felt right to him at the time but later came back to haunt him, as he moved around from “one dead end job to another”, because he didn’t have many qualifications and no real focus on what he wanted to do. When his wife decided to come to Hartlepool College to gain GCSEs (and has since progressed to Access to Education), her positive experiences inspired Tommy to follow her lead and enrol on the College’s Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery. The course fired up his ambition, and Tommy has now secured an Apprenticeship. Tommy said “It really is never too late to make a difference to your life”.

Robyn Fraser, 19, from Sedgefield, has ambitions to be a quantity surveyor, a vital and high responsibility profession within the construction industry. After completing her first year on the Level 3 Construction and the Built Environment course as a full-time student, Robyn gained a position as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor with international company Interserve, who were impressed by her progress and suggested she continue with her studies part-time. BE THE # NEXT...Pastry Chef,like Ryan Healey

Ryan enrolled on the College’s Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery, Patisserie and Confectionery Certificate whilst working full time at the Hartlepool Power Station. Showing immense talent in the kitchen, he quickly decided to change his career goal and become a pastry chef. His hard work and commitment throughout the year was outstanding and did not go unnoticed, with Ryan representing HCFE in numerous national competitions and cooking in the College’s own Flagship Restaurant. He has since moved to London to further his career, from where he sends back frequent news about his successes and new acquaintances, such as this “selfie” (inset) with top chef and TV presenter Michel Roux Jnr.

BE THE # NEXT...Degree Student,like Michelle Dolan

Michelle Dolan, 34, came to Hartlepool from Manchester, via Cambridge, in November 2007. After settling into the town, mum Michelle enrolled on the College’s Access to Higher Education Science Pathway to pursue her interest in Podiatry. This enabled Michelle to start a learning journey which has seen her progress to a degree in Podiatry at New College Durham, with ambitions to enter private practice. Amongst the many reasons for her success, Michelle cites the financial advice and support the College was able to offer, and also the flexibility Hartlepool College allowed her by taking into account her commitments as a parent.

BE THE # NEXT...Hair Salon Owner,like Angela Lee

Angela Lee, 42, of Hartlepool, forged a very successful and high-profile career in insurance but grew bored of working in an industry that was becoming increasingly bureaucratic. Her original ambition was to work in hairdressing and she enrolled at Hartlepool College, breezing through the Level 1, 2 and 3 VTCT Hairdressing courses to gain the skills she needed to be a superb stylist. However, her years of business experience also fired a desire to find success as an entrepreneur, and so she took over an existing salon in the centre of a residential area and with two nearby schools ensuring a lot of passers-by. The business really took off, and now Angela is preparing to expand the business and rebrand it House of Lee Hairdressing & Beauty.

BE THE # NEXT...Massage Therapist,like Chloe Watson

Chloe Watson, 19, from Hartlepool, has secured a job that will fill many with envy – a position as a massage therapist at the Ocean Beach Spa in Ibiza. After leaving Dyke House School Chloe originally wanted to be a hairdresser, and enrolled at the College on a Hairdressing course. However, a trip to Ibiza to see a friend who was working there as a massage therapist made her realise that was the career for her too. Chloe changed courses, studying Level 2 Complementary Therapy part time. Her tutors considered Chloe a “top student” with consistently high levels of achievement, and none were surprised when she managed to turn her ambition into reality so quickly.

BE THE # NEXT...Teaching Assistantlike Maria Hockborn

Maria Hockburn, 37, came to the UK from Hungary in 2002 with an ambition to work on cruise ships, for which she needed to be able to speak English. She quickly learned the new language and gained employment on a P&O cruise vessel, during which time she met a merchant seaman from Hartlepool. The couple married and started a family. Maria decided that she wanted to work in primary education as a teaching assistant. She enrolled on a Level 2 education course, quickly progressing to Level 3 and then finally Foundation Degree Supporting and Learning, gaining practical experience at Eldon Grove Academy. BE THE # NEXT...Prison Officerlike Abbie Robinson

Abbie Robinson, 18, of Hartlepool, had her ambitions for the perfect career locked down quite early in life - with a desire to work in the Prison Service. After gaining seven GCSEs from St Hild’s, Abbie came to Hartlepool College to study on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Public Services. Abbie breezed through the Diploma and has recently concluded the first year of her Foundation Degree at the College, supplementing her studies with an impressive commitment to volunteering. As well as every Thursday working in the kitchen of Hartlepool and District Hospice and turning out for most of their fundraising events, Abbie has also been a Steward at Sunderland F.C., doing such a good job marshalling at events that she returns next season promoted to a supervisory position.

BE THE # NEXT...Fitness Instructor,like Shaun Kenney

Former Wellfield School pupil Shaun joined the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport, Coaching and Development at the College in September 2014 with a GCSE profile of 11 A* - C grades. His ambition was to be a Fitness Instructor, and when an opportunity came along for an apprenticeship in exactly that role in the College’s Luminary Fitness Suite, working directly with both students and paying customers, Shaun successfully applied. He started in January and became a much-valued asset to the Suite, commenting “I’m now working full time as a fitness instructor, studying towards my fitness qualifications and learning from all the staff in the Luminary. I couldn’t be happier.”

Additional Financial Information

LoansLoans are financial products students will have to pay back. For 2015-16 there are two main types of loans available for HE students:

Tuition Fee LoanYou don’t have to pay your fees upfront. The tuition fee loan is available to all eligible students to cover the full cost of fees each year. This loan is not means tested so any eligible student who secures a place at university can use the loan to cover the fees each year regardless of their household income.

With the exception of students wishing to study a PGCE, if you already have a degree-level qualification, you may not be entitled to a tuition fee loan. Please contact the Student Services for further details (see page 2).

Maintenance Loan for Living CostsFull-time students can apply for a Maintenance Loan to help with living costs. Maintenance Loans are paid into your bank account at the start of each term. Part-time students cannot apply for a Maintenance Loan.

GrantsA grant is a financial product that DOES NOT have to be paid back. For 2015-16, there are a number of grants available for full-time HE students including:

Maintenance Grants - these are available to students whose household income is £42,875 or less.

Special Support Grants - if you get or qualify for Income Support or Housing Benefit.(You may get the Special Support Grant instead of the Maintenance Grant).

Childcare Grant - the Childcare Grant could cover as much as 85 per cent of your childcare costs during term time and holidays.

For more information on Student Finance please visit www.gov.uk/student-finance or contact our student services team. Please note all financial information correct at time of print. (June 2015)

If you’re starting a HE course in September 2015, you will pay nothing for your education until you complete the course and earn over £21,000.
