Bilkent University Faculty of Music and Performing Arts Graduate Entrance Exam PART I - Music Theory and Analysis 1. Harmonic Analysis a. Provide a Roman numeral and inversion-symbol label analysis to the given Schumann Song (Dichterliebe No. 1). If you are not familiar with roman numeral analysis, you can use any system that includes functions of the chords. b. Identify and label all the non-chord tones in the piece. 2. Formal Analysis a. Provide a formal analysis of the given Haydn piano sonata in Eb, Hob:XVI:52. You may mark your analysis on the score. - Identify sonata elements in the piece, e.g. Introduction, primary theme, transitions, subordinate theme(s), closing theme(s), developmental pre-core and core, re-transition, recapitulation, coda etc... - Identify the main tonal areas. - Identify the cadence types (only from the beginning to the repeat sign) - Identify the phrase structures of the primary and subordinate themes (period, sentence, hybrid etc…) b.In a short paragraph, briefly discuss the significance of the this Sonata’s exposition. Explain which parts of the exposition does not convey the general norm of 18th century sonata allegro form? 3. Post-Tonal Analysis (Composers only) a. Submit an analysis of the given piece. b.
