HS2 Petition. Footpaths in Wendover Parish

The Problem

Wendover depends on its scenery for its livelihood. We are not just whining about pretty

trees. Loss of attractive footpaths and bridleways, whether temporary or permanent, will

have a deleterious effect on the viability of Wendover as a tourist town.

Nine footpaths are intersected by the line, two more are grievously affected and many

others are adversely impacted by noise and loss of view. (See map) The eleven paths most

seriously affected are, from south to north:- Wen 38, Wen 37, Wen 36 (the Chiltern Way)

Wen 39, Wen 57. Wen 14, Wen 13a, Ellesborough Road (The Ridgeway) , Wen6, Wen11 and

Wen 55.

Of particular concern are the following:-

Footpath Wen 39 is a green lane. The section off Bowood Lane will disappear under an embankment. HS2 in a letter to me on 26/6/15 state that on completion, the path will be realigned to pass under the viaduct. This is wilfully misunderstanding the nature of historic green lanes which are an important feature of the landscape. They are usually old tracks which never made it into tar and so fell into disuse as roads. Wen 39 used to connect Bowood Lane with Rocky lane. It is ludicrous to state that such a lane can be reinstated. It will be lost forever to become a fenced path under a viaduct. Bridleway Wen 57 is part of the Iknield Way Trail Riders’ Route. It runs alongside the bypass between Bacombe Lane and Dunsmore Lane. It will run alongside the 6m noise barrier and will probably be unusable by horses. A letter from HS2 to me on 26/6/15 states ‘studies show that the noise from the railway will be below the level that will startle horses’. If this wasn’t a serious matter, it would be a hilarious assertion!! I asked for access to these studies, but never received a reply. The bridleway will be in a ‘noise sandwich’ between the bypass and the line. If the noise barriers will do their job of reflecting noise, then surely they will reflect the bypass noise in addition to the muffled noise of the train, making the bridleway a no go area for most horses. Additionally, the horses will not ‘get used to it’ because this is a long distance riders’ route so they will not be local horses.

Footpaths Wen 6, 11 & 55 are in the field of the north portal. They will be diverted along

Ellesborough Rd, and de facto amalgamated for 2 yrs & 3 months. These are very popular

local walks whose loss will be keenly felt. Also Ellesborough Rd is itself to be diverted,

making the prospects for these paths pretty grim.

The Solution

The preferred mitigation would be a mined tunnel past Wendover. If that is not allowed then a possible reroute for the bridleway would be necessary .That is to leave Wen 13 via Wen 13c, 13b and 14 to re-join Bacombe Lane thus avoiding Dunsmore Lane and path 57.

The terrain is quite difficult, as it includes a steep dip, and the existing stiles would have to be replaced with the consent of the landowner. HS2 to meet the cost.
