for every day of the week!

The Sermon on the Mount

Part 2

CROSS CENTRAL

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and

tooth for tooth.’39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil

person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn

to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants

to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat

as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go

with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you,

and do not turn away from the one who wants to

borrow from you.

1

Time to Think

What does “eye for eye” and “tooth for tooth” mean?

When someone is mean to us or treats us badly, which is

easier: to pay them back, or to be kind?

Why is it difficult to be kind to mean people?

How does Jesus want us to treat people who are mean

to us?

Can you remember a story in

the Bible where Jesus was kind

to someone who was mean to

him? How has Jesus been kind

to us, even though we don’t

deserve it?

New Words:

resist = fight against

sue = take someone

to a court, usually to

get money from

them.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, sorry for all the times that we treat

money and possessions as if they are more precious

than anything else. Please help us to remember that

you are more precious than them all. Amen.

2. the place not to store up treasures (verse 19)

3. little flying creatures (verse 19)

4. taking something that isn't yours (v. 19)

5. something valuable and precious (verse 19)

6. a part of our body that we use to see (verse 22)

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on

earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where

thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves

treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not

destroy, and where thieves do not break in and

steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will

be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your

eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of

light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole

body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you

is darkness, how great is that darkness! 24 “No one can

serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and

love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and

despise the other. You cannot serve both God and

money.

7

Time to Think

Our treasure on earth are things that we think about a lot,

spend lots of time on, and work hard to get for ourselves.

What are some of your earthly

treasures?

Where does Jesus say we should

store up treasures instead? Why?

Often, we first see earthly treasures

with our eyes and want to have them. What does Jesus

say about our eyes, and how we should be careful about

what is it is we want most?

New Word:

vermin = small wild

animals (like rats)

When someone is mean to us, Jesus wants us to

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that even though we are

sinners, you love us very much—so much that you died

on the cross to rescue us! Forgive us for all the times that

we try to get back at people who are mean to us.

Please help us to be kind to them, because you have

been kind to us. Amen.

be kind get back at them

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your

neighbour and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you,

love your enemies and pray for those who persecute

you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in

heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the

good, and sends rain on the righteous and the

unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what

reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors

doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own

people, what are you doing more than others? Do

not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore,

as your heavenly Father is perfect.

2

Time to Think

Why does Jesus say it’s not

good to only love people who

love you back?

Is it easy to love and pray for

people who treat us badly?

Can we be perfect like God is

perfect?

What is wrong with our hearts?

Who is the only person who

can help us?

New Words:

persecute = treat

someone badly

tax collectors = people

who collected money

for the king. They

would sometimes take

more money than they

had to, so that they

could steal some!

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, sorry for all the times that we try to look

like we are obeying God only so that people can see us

and be impressed. Help us to remember that it matters

what you think about us, not what other people think.

Amen.

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the

hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show

others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have

received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put

oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will

not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but

only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father,

who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

6

Time to Think

Fasting is when people don’t eat (and sometimes don’t

even drink) for a long time, so that they can focus all

their thoughts on God, and so that they can spend time

praying. When people fast, they feel hungry, and

sometimes people will look sad on purpose so that

other people can see that they are fasting and praise

them for it.

What does Jesus say people should do instead?

Why should they do this?

New Words:

somber = sad

disfigure = change

how you look

b = b e = e i = i l = l m = m

n = n o = o r = r s = s t = t

u = u v = v y = y Unlock the secret message:

but i tell

--- - ---- you love

--- ---- your enemies

---- ------- Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that, while we were God’s

enemies, you died for us. Help us not only to love the

people who love us back, but our enemies too. Amen.

1“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in

front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will

have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 “So

when you give to the needy, do not announce

it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the

synagogues and on the streets, to be honoured by

others. Truly I tell you, they have received their

reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do

not let your left hand know what your right hand is

doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then

your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will

reward you.

3

Time to Think

Why is it nice to do good works in front of other people?

When people see us giving to the needy, what does it

make them think about us?

But what does Jesus say we

should do instead?

Who will reward us if we

keep it a secret when we

give to the needy? Why is

this reward better than the

praise that we get from

people for our good works?

New Words:

hypocrite = someone

who likes to boast that

they obey God, but

doesn't act like it.

synagogue = the place

where people came

together to worship God.

Prayer

Say the Lord’s prayer, and think about how each part is

important for us to pray.

9 This, then, is how you should pray:

‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin

against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive

you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your

Father will not forgive your sins.

5

Time to Think

Who does this prayer start with? With us and our needs,

or with praising God?

Do we pray only so that we can ask God for a list of

things we want?

Can we ask God for things we need?

Can we ask God to forgive our sins if

we don’t want to forgive others?

New Word:

hallowed = holy

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, sorry for all the times that we do good

things only so that other people can praise us for it.

Please help us to remember that the reward that we

get from God in the end is better than taking praise for

ourselves for our good works. Amen.

Page 8: Part 2...2 5 6 Cross Word Puzzle 1. breaking something completely (verse 19) 2. the place not to store up treasures (verse 19) 3. little flying creatures (verse 19) 4. taking something

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,

for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and

on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell

you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But

when you pray, go into your room, close the door

and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your

Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward

you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on

babbling like pagans, for they think they will be

heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like

them, for your Father knows what you need before

you ask him.

4

Time to Think

Why is it nice to pray in front of people? What do

people think about us when we say nice prayers?

Why does Jesus say it is better to pray where no one

can see you?

This doesn't mean that we can’t pray in front of people

at all. What is Jesus teaching

us about our attitudes?

Why don’t we have to use

many words when we talk to

God?

New Word:

pagans = people who

don’t worship our God,

but worship other

pretend gods.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that you know what we

need before we ask you. Thank you that you love it

when we talk to you. Please forgive us for all the times

that we pray out loud in front of people only to impress

them. Amen.
