PART 1: CHRISTMAS TREE
Student 1: I’m confused. This is a Christmas service but we have a plain undecorated tree in the
middle of the chancel.
Student 2: Yeah, doesn’t look real “Christmasy”, does it?
Narrator: I think there is a reason why it is here like that. Maybe we can learn something from
it.
Student 1: Like what?
Narrator: Well, tell me what you see.
Student 3: I see an evergreen tree.
Narrator: That’s right. Now think really hard and see if there are any lessons for us from this
tree.
Student 4: The color green must mean something.
Student 5: When I think of green, it reminds me of things that grow like plants, grass, trees.
Student 6: In others words, we could say it stands for life – because it’s alive. Just like it says in
Genesis.
Students: “And God said, “Let the land produce vegetation; seed-bearing plants and trees on
the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds” And it was so. (Gen.
1:11)
Student 7: And this kind of tree stays green all year long. That could represent Jesus because we
know He is alive.
Students: “I am the Resurrection and the life.” (John11:25)
Student 8: Jesus also told us:
Students: “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6)
Narrator: Did you know that the color green is sometimes called the “second color of
Christmas” because of the symbolism of life?
Student 9: What’s the first color?
Narrator: Let’s wait and see if you can figure that out later in the service. Is there anything else
we can learn by looking at the tree?
Student 10: It looks to me like the branches and needles all point up. Like they are pointing to
heaven.
Students: “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory
above the heavens.” (Psalm 8:1)
Student 11: It also reminds me that Jesus ascended into heaven.
Students: “When (Jesus) had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and
blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. (Luke
24: 50-51)
Narrator: You’ve come up with some great lessons to learn from this Christmas tree. God is
certainly our creator, giving life to all things. And Jesus is certainly the Way, the Truth, and the
Life.
HYMN: “Jesus, Name Above All Names” v. 1, 3 (preferably by students) (From: All God’s People Sing Songbook #145)
PART 2: LIGHTS
Student 1: I still think we need to decorate this tree. At least put lights on the tree.
Narrator: I have to agree with you. A Christmas tree always looks better when it is decorated.
Student 2: And we have to add lights first.
Narrator: That’s exactly what God did.
Student 3: What do you mean?
Narrator: Well, before God created the world, there was nothing but darkness and the very first
thing God made was light.
Students: And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was
good and He separated the light from the darkness. (Genesis 1:3, 4)
Student 4: I wish we could do the same thing with this tree.
Narrator: Why don’t you try it?
Student 4: Ok. We’ll give it a shot.
Students: Let there be light! (Have someone turn on or plug in the lights from the tree.) Student 5: That really looks cool. Guess we’ll remember to think of creation when we see the
lights on trees.
Student 6: When I look at the lights I think about Jesus being the light of the world. He calls
himself that in the Bible.
Students: Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Student 7: In the first part of the service, we learned that Jesus is the Life, and now we can say
that He is also the Light.
HYMN: “O Little Town of Bethlehem” v. 1, 2
