May Calendar
Dear Parents,
Congratulations to our students, teachers and parents on
the recent academic honors that have been awarded to
numerous Parkside Elementary students. Top honors were
awarded to several Parkside Elementary students in
various writing contests that were held throughout
Delaware County. A top honor blue ribbon was also
awarded to the Parkside Elementary Reading Olympics
Team at the Delaware County Reading Olympics
Competition. Kudos to all on exceptional performances!
May is action packed and will kick off with Teacher
Appreciation Week. Additionally this month we celebrate
grandparents and grand friends by inviting them to spend
time at school with their grandchildren - please see the
schedule posted on the Parkside Elementary School
webpage for specific visiting days and hours. The choral
and art festival will also take place this month along with
band concerts, Pacing for Parkside, the book fair, field day
and the reading celebration. This could be the busiest
month yet, so please be sure to check the calendar for
dates and times of each event.
I invite everyone to step out and enjoy the arts this month
at the Parkside Choral and Art Festival that will happen at
Parkside Elementary - songs will fill the air and student
artwork will adorn the walls. The Penn-Delco Elementary
A and B Bands are also scheduled to perform at Sun Valley
High School; this is sure to be an enjoyable evening of
music. The arts are alive and well in Penn-Delco!
Best,
Teresa Ford
Principal
Congratulations Blue Ribbon Readers Congratulation to the Parkside Elementary Reading Olympics Team on earning a blue ribbon at the

elementary division of the competition included teams of students from schools throughout Delaware
County with each elementary team participating in three rounds of completion. The Reading Olympics
Team was required to read a list of 45 books; students and coaches read the books independently and then
met on Thursday mornings throughout the year to discuss the books and prepare for the competition.

PSSA FUN Thank you to the Parkside PTL for providing so many fun opportunities for our students throughout the PSSA
testing window. Everything kicked off with a pep rally where students and teachers performed entertaining
skits. Each day of the testing window breakfast was served and drawing prizes were provided by the
Parkside PTL. Thank you to parent volunteers who came in early to cook breakfast and serve our children.
Thank you to the Parkside PTL and parent volunteers for supporting our students!
Lessons in Safety Parkside Elementary was visited by AAA Mid Atlantic’s Foundation for Safety and Education to teach kindergarten through second grade students about the importance of traffic safety. A robot named “Otto the Auto” facilitated safety lessons on wearing seat belts, sitting in the back seat, safe places to play, how to cross the street, bike safety, etc.; Otto is a 3ft. tall remote controlled talking car. The students loved interacting with Otto and learned very important lessons about traffic safety.
Thank you to AAA Mid-Atlantic and Mrs. Danielle Clark for coordinating this safety assembly!
Peter’s Picks for Character
As part of an ongoing positive behavior program at Parkside Elementary, Core Essential character
traits are introduced to students each month at Parkside Elementary during school wide
classroom meetings. The purpose of Core Essentials and other positive behavior initiatives at
Parkside is to ensure a positive school climate for all. The students listed below were selected by
Peter for exhibiting the Core Essential trait of PEACE throughout the previous month. Thank you
to our guidance counselor, Ms. Talbot, for this and other positive behavior projects at Parkside

Reading Counts The Reading Counts program is a tool used to support independent reading at Parkside Elementary that
allows students to self-select books of interest on their independent reading level and monitor progress.
The amount of independent reading a child does has a direct correlation to vocabulary growth, reading
comprehension, verbal fluency, content knowledge and higher levels of achievement. Independent
reading happens daily at school and is assigned nightly. Reinforcement of reading at home will help to
increase your child’s achievement levels.
