As we hurtle towards the end of the season we can start to

look forward to the summer, when there is less mud, and more

football.

Most Central League teams have just four games left to play

and Miramar Rangers look pretty set to hang on to their 5 point

margin over Wests and take the O’Brian Shield/Central League

double.

They also looked alright playing against the Wellington Phoenix

on Wednesday night at Te Whaea. A couple of Miramar boys

even played for the Nix who were without regulars Paul Ifill

(hammy), Vinnie Lia (lazy), Chr is Greenacre (doesn’t play in the

cold) and Leo Bertos (semi-retired).

There were also a few interesting trialists on display for the

Nix, including Englishman, and former Mariner, Nicky Travis,

goalkeeper Jess van Straten, and the supebly named Spanish

striker Dani Sanchez, who had just flown in after being released

by Inverness in Scotland.

The Phoenix have warm up games against Western Suburbs

next Wednesday, the New Zeland U20s and Waitakere City the

week after, before a trip to Dunedin for a massive game againstthe Brisbane Roar on August 20th. A-League Champion Judas

Bubble Kosta Barbarouses was in attendance at last night’s

game, probably reflecting on how nice it was to be at a club with

money.

FOOTBALL CENTRAL PREMIER LEAGUE

This week’s sees a highly unspectacular round with each of the

top five teams facing a bottom five team.

Having lost the use of Newtown Park due to the RWC,

Wellington United (4th, 22pts) play host to Karori (6th, 16pts) at

the new turf at Wakefield Park. United have slipped to fourth

after being on Chatham Cup duty last week, while Karori have

risen to sixth following their 3-1 win over Wests. Karori boast

a number of United rejects including Coco, Tony Wall, JohnnyDwyer and Nick Tarrant, who will all want to put one over G

Little and his cash filled boots.

Parky predicts: United wins 2-1.

Also on Wakefield, Olympic ressies (7th, 15pts) try to resuscitate

their season when they face Miramar ressies (3rd, 23pts). It

won’t happen. Olympic have been going backwards, and the

depth of the Mar should be far too strong.

Parky predicts: Mar wins 4-1.

Island Bay (5th, 22pts) have also been going backwards in recent

weeks, and face a potential banana skin fixture against Marist

(8th, 15pts). Marist came from 2-0 down last week to share the

spoils with Wainui, while the Bay’s poor run continued with a

2-0 loss to Stop Out. Park Life hears rumours that even club

stalwarts like Bay U19s head recruiter Jamie Milne is frustrated

with the club and talking of walking the plank.

Parky predicts: 1-1 draw.

In what could end in a massacre, Wainui (9th, 8pts) travel north

to face Upper Hutt (1st, 28pts). Upper Hutt pulled 5 points

clear at the top following a 1-0 win over Olympic. After raiding

the playing stocks of Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt seems to have

steadied the speed wobbles they experienced a few weeks

ago. The title is theirs to lose, for the second year running.

Parky predicts: Upper Hutt wins 4-0.

And finally, Stop Out (2nd, 23pts) travel to Endeavour Park for

their clash with Wests ressies (10th, 6th). Stop Out have come

from nowhere to jump into second place. If Capital Football

had a half decent website we’d be able to tell you what kind

of run they are on. What we can tell you is that they won 2-0

over Island Bay last week. Riveting stuff. Wests ressies on the

other hand are horrible. However, with their first team playing

on Sunday, and effectively out of the running in Central League,

expect the mandatory stacking of three first teamers this

weekend. Will it be enough? Will Comedy Carney still be at the

club come this weekend? And will Jason Musgrove receive his

token yellow card?

Parky predicts: No, yes, yes, and a 3-1 win to Stop Out.

CENTRAL LEAGUE

Rangers’ relentless run towards the Central League title

continued with a 4-0 thumping of the Bubbles, who finished the

game with 10 men after an obligatory red card. Dom Rowe got a

brace to end any hopes the Bubbles may have had of defending

their title, and Miramar, undefeated in the league this season,

would require a meltdown of epic proportions to let it slip now.

Wests retained their faint hopes of the winning the league with

a 2-1 win over a Lower Hutt side mired in inner-club turmoil.Ryan Cain scored a double to keep Wests in second, 5 points

adrift of Miramar with 4 games to go (and a reserve team to

prop up!)

The game of this round is undoubtedly Rapa vs Wests – Rapa are

lying third, 10 points behind Miramar, but with two games in

hand thanks to their successful Big Cup run so far. The winner

of this game will extend their hopes of somehow snatching the

title away from Miramar for at least one more week, while the

loser could well end up out of the title race – Wests reserves will

certainly be watching with keen interest.

Miramar welcome Napier City Rovers at Farrington Field –

Rovers’ are stuck in the middle of the table going nowhere, and

have set their sights now on the Big Cup where they’re through

to the quarter-finals. All this may mean that Miramar could have

a relatively straightforward afternoon, but let’s not forget that on

their way to the Big Cup quarters, the Rovers crushed Miramar

5-0 in Napier. Can the Rovers repeat their heroics? Or will the

Rangers return the favour? Parky’s money (all 75c of it) is on

Miramar.

The remaining three games bring us all the excitement of sitting

in a dentist’s waiting room. Brendan McIntyre’s McLower Hutt

1921 welcome the Palmy North Marist side which is on its way

to relegation, Tawa and Petone will engage in an epic c lash to

move up to 7th place (maybe even 6th!), and Bubbles wil l try

to restore some pride after two weeks of battering when theyhead up to sunny Hawke’s Bay to face the second-to-bottom

Maycenvale.
