DID YOU KNOW?

When I was 50, my doctor ad-

vised me that a man in his 50s

shouldn’t play tennis. I heeded

his advice & could hardly wait

until I reached 60 to start

playing again.

Tennis Questions

1. I miss a lot of overheads long. What am I doing wrong?

Remember to have your arm & racquet fully extended at contact to hit the overhead effectively. To create

power you have to generate racquet head speed. Don’t throw your body at the ball to try to create power. Keep

your shoulders sideways and knees bent. Hit up and exaggerate your follow-through. These things will help

you to stabilize your positioning and add control to your overhead.

2. I often have more trouble returning a slow second serve than one with decent pace on it. My

timing is off and I don’t do well when I have to create my own power. What should I do?

Focus on letting the ball come to you, rather than making contact with it too far out in front of you. You

must create power against the second serve. On the first serve, you use your opponent’s power. A suggestion is

to have your coach hit lots of second serves to you.
