Celebrating over a Century of Faith and Education

St. Barbara Parish is a Roman Catholic community celebrating a century of faith in the Bridgeport area. Our faith community welcomes all people, helping them grow spiritually through liturgy, prayer, and education, and socially through activities for all ages. Our school takes great pride in fostering these values in our children. We give witness to our faith by sharing with each other our God-given gifts and talents. We nourish and sustain our faith as a family by celebrating the sacraments and the presence of the risen Lord among us in the Eucharist.

A FAREWELL LETTER FROM THE PASTOR Dear St. Barbara Parishioners, Many years ago, one of my professors in the seminary said that gratefulness is a very important trait of man’s character. Therefore, in this letter I would like to express my gratitude. First, I am grateful to God for the privilege of serving six years as your Pastor at St. Barbara Parish in Bridgeport-Chicago. It was the summer of 2013, and I was still an associate priest at St. Thecla Parish, when I received a phone call from Bishop Wypych with the proposition of making me a pastor of your wonderful parish. A few weeks later, I met Cardinal Fran-cis George. He was smiling and said to me, “there is a special place for you” ̶ he meant the church of St. Bar-bara. Thus, I am grateful to Cardinal George for his decision to appoint me for this pastoral assignment; I pray for him every day. Moreover, I am grateful to all St. Barbara parishioners who showed me a warm welcome, offered prayers, and journeyed together with me these past six years. Now I would like to offer my gratitude to the school staff who showed a great spirit of collaboration during this difficult time of the Renew My Church campaign. In a special way, I am grateful for having had the op-portunity of working with Dorene Hurckes, Nicole Nolazco and our interim principal, Hether Lytton. It was a true privilege to work with you. I am also grateful to the school’s teachers and staff for your professionalism, example of faith, love and dedication to teaching our students. I am also grateful to Michele Worth, who led our Ladies’ Guild while supporting our school. I am very grateful to God for our wonderful students and their supportive parents, who understand the im-portance of a Catholic education. I offer my prayers for all of you. I thank each parish organization who supported me during my stay at St. Barbara. I direct these words espe-cially to the members of the Finance Council with Adrian Goetz as its President, and the Parish Council under the direction of George Vanderford. It was a great adventure to work with all of you. Above all, I was grate-ful to work with you on the initiative of the Parish Carnival. On the subject of the carnival, I would like to say thanks to Wendy Kaput and Denise Holland for chairing our five carnivals as well as to all the volunteers who made St. Barbara’s Carnival a successful event. I would also like to say thank you to the Holy Name Society, and especially the President, Phil Whitehouse, for establishing the Car Show, the annual Dinner Dance and the Parish Men’s Choir. In a very special way, I am indebted to Eva Mrgan and Ken Ricci. Thank you for your gift of music and your leadership . I thank the Rosary Sodality Ladies and the Seniors Citizens Group. Finally, I can’t forget the Knights of Co-lumbus, especially Al Milewski for his work forming the St. Barbara K of C Council which took part in so many parish activities, and to Wally Podrazik for his dedication to the Archbishop Quigley Council. My gratitude also goes out to our Facilities Committee – Sue Wisniewski and the late Joe Michalak. Thank you for helping me with all the different projects we worked on in my six years here. My gratitude goes out to the Filipino community for their participation in all parish activities and in keeping the Simbang Gabi spirit alive. A great thanks to our Monday morning count team, B. Glabicki, Diann Bak, and Barbara Rekar, for their faith-fulness in showing up every week to do the count In a special way, I am very grateful to Jim Bertucci for his outstanding leadership in the weekly Bingo initia-tive. He has brought to the parish and the school some much needed support and resources that cannot be overlooked. In addition, I thank him for being at Mass every Sunday morning, his help in making sure we have additional help when it is needed, and for the hundred and one other things he does, of which people may not be aware.

Fr. Arthur in his younger days. Even then, he was the “Minister of Hospitality”. Father Arthur and Fr. Andrzej as the “Blues

Brothers” for a Holy Name Men’s Concert

Finally, I would like to say, from the bottom of my heart, that I am grateful to the people in the rectory, espe-cially Father Andrzej, Carol Spalla-Malone, Dolores Becatti, Judy Lukwinski and Tom Groark. For the last six years, I have loved the parish and the people but, if I have done something wrong, said some-thing or forgot something, please forgive me. Although it is time to say good bye, I think we will remain friends. I will keep you in my prayers and thoughts. Please pray for me. Peace. St. Barbara, pray for us!

Fr. Wojciech Artur Marat P.S.: For your information, the Archdiocese has given me a six-month sabbatical to further my education. I will spend some time in Poland, Italy, and Fatima. I will remember you in a special way during my visit to the Shrine of Our Lady in Fatima this summer.

Strengthen him and release your righteousness, peace and joy into his life. May your ministering angels watch over him so that no evil will befall him.
