A Message from Fr. Stefano

“No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon." (Lk 16:12-13) “See how many masters they serve, those who refuse to serve the only Lord.” This is a quote from Chesterton, who allegedly, is such a bottomless mine for quotes that I could not find its original place. It came to my mind when I thought of the verb to serve, which Jesus uses to describe what we do for God and for money introducing a clever opposition that has become an iconic commonplace, when talking about a moral use of money and resources. It has become so commonplace because it describes something true, though unintended. No one thinks, upfront, that they are “serving” money. We all think that money must serve us. But we all have witnessed, perhaps at times in ourselves, the irony of money that ceases to be a means to our (hopefully lofty) goals and becomes a goal, sometimes an obsession. The vice that describes this human behavior is called “avarice”. In the paintings that represent vices versus virtues avarice is depicted as person physically consumed and contorted, usually holding or counting coins, hunching over, to protect the treasure from the gaze and envy of others: they are the enemy that is threatening “my precious”, to quote Gollum from the Lord of the Rings, a very good example of

avarice and cupidity in literature. Avarice is a mortal sin, a capital vice, when it becomes dominant. Last week we observed the polar opposite of this sin: prodigality. The prodigal son squandered all his wealth. Notably this sin is not considered as grave as avarice, though. Perhaps because, when wealth evaporates, there’s nothing left, and one becomes poor? In this case poverty would hardly be a virtue though. Jesus appreciates good administrators, judging from his preaching on economic matters, probably because a good administrator is able to help others: in the Bible these kinds of acts are highly regarded. The biblical ideal of a family, a town, a society is a place where people can live and work in harmony, where each one contributes according to their capacity, where the rich and powerful share liberally and do not impose on others, where the large majority is capable to provide for themselves, and the needy, the less fortunate, the stranger are generously taken care for. Money, resources, wealth are indeed dedicated to improving the life of people, their clear purpose. In difficult and divided political times these elementary indications that come from Scripture are worth repeating, even if we know them in theory, to gauge where we are as individual, as a community, as a society: it is definitely helpful politically and economically, but Jesus points out how the political and social are downstream from our relationship with ourselves and God.
