St. John's Baptist de la Salle A Catholic Family of Faith www.stjohnsfamilyoffaith.com August 16th 2015

Dear Family of Faith,

I hope you like this new format of our Parish Bulletin. A lot of time, thought and energy has gone into making it informative, not just in the events happening in our parish, but also to be a vehicle for religious and faith formation for both adults and children. I want to thank Dan Capato for all his work in designing our Parish Website and to his wife – Sarah, in taking on the responsibility of managing both the website and the bulletin.

As you know, Pope Francis is coming to Philadelphia in September to host a World Meeting of Families. The theme for the WMOF is – “Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive.” I thought it appropriate to deal with issues concerning the family today. So, over the next few weeks there will be articles on topics such as: marriage, prayer and children. I hope these articles stimulate not only your interest, but your faith and conversations around your dinner table that, please God, will strengthen our families and make them what God calls them to be – the foundation of the Church.

With prayerful wishes to all, Fr. Rich

A word from our Ministries

TUTORS REQUESTED

Justice in Action Ministry (JAM) is embarking on an exciting new project. As outreach into our

community we are looking for volunteers who would like to work with children at St. Peter's School in Reading. You can become a VIP of support in a

child’s life by simply reviewing math facts or reading one-on-one with a student. No special training is

required. Only one hour per week is requested, however more time is possible. A background check and completion of “Protecting God's Children” (PGC)

are required. The parish will arrange background checks and cover all fees. Plans to begin are in

mid October so it is important to get started now. Please consider this new and rewarding

project with a donation of your time. Call Jan Jackson at 484.269.7656 if you are

interested or have any questions. Protecting God’s Children Workshops (PCG) will be offered here at St John’s in the LaSalle

Academy cafeteria on Saturday, September 26 from 9:00 AM to noon. To register, call the parish office

610-777-1697. PGC will also be offered at Holy Guardian Angels on Saturdays August 29 and

September 19 from 9:00 AM to noon. To register call Andrew Angstadt at

610.929.1416 or e-mail [email protected]

We welcome to our Family of Faith, our newest young members:

Claire Abigail Chmielowski, Brendan Horst Heberlein Amelia Miriam Heberlein, and Autumn Marie Heberlein

We also congratulate Amelia, who also made her First Communion on her Baptismal day.

Feeding the Poor We've all heard the sermon about Jesus feeding the masses by the miracle of the loaves and the fishes. Every time my wife and I come to mass we bring some items for the food bank. I often think, what if every parishioner brought just one single item? A can of soup, a box of macaroni, or a jar of applesauce? We hear that God works in mysterious ways; here is your chance to help those in need of food. This is how it will work: I just got involved in a business called ACN, and they are the world’s largest supplier of utilities and technology. I have my own ACN website. You go to my website and shop for utilities, such as, cell phone and digital phone service, television, electric and gas, home security service and high speed internet. Lets say you can switch over your electric supplier through ACN, you will still receive your bill from your current electric company. Only your supplier changes. Check the rates against your latest bill, AND if it saves you some money, OR, if you would be paying about the same, switch over! Here’s why: Every time one of us becomes an ACN customer, ACN will feed a child in need of a meal for a day. Switch over two services and ACN will provide two meals, and so on. ACN has already provided over 1 million meals to hungry children in need, right here at home, and are committed to providing 1.5 million meals this year. How would you like to be a part of this wonderful program? The beauty of it is, that it wont cost you one red cent. Please be sure to pass this along to other parishioners and any of your friends. Lets feed the children! My website is: www.jbaddick.acndirect.com If you have any questions or would be interested in starting your own ACN business, call me at 610.698.7533. – Thank you, Joe Baddick

Mass close to our hearts!

Saint Bernard of Clairvaux Feast day August 20

In 1112, at the age of 22, Bernard chose to enter a poor, crumbling monastery called Citeaux, a few miles from his home near Dijon, in France. The monks there, most of whom were elderly, faithfully followed the Rule of Saint Benedict. The monks at Citeaux lived a stricter life of prayer, silence, and penance. Thirty-one other men entered with Bernard.

Within three years, Citeaux was flourishing, and Bernard was sent to start a new monastery in a place that came to be named Clairvaux. As abbot in that first year, Bernard was strict about meals (sometimes only barley bread and boiled leaves), work, prayers, and sleep. Then he became sick and learned to be more understanding of human needs. After that, the monastery thrived. During his busy years as abbot, Bernard often longed for solitude and a simple monk’s life. Almost daily he received visitors and letters from people asking for advice and help. He gave time and effort to each request. Because of his ability to settle disputes, Bernard was also called to various countries to give advice on affairs of Church and of government. In 1130, the newly elected Pope Innocent II faced the popularity of an antipope named Anacletus. The latter’s claim to be pope threatened to split the Church. Bernard traveled to ask government and Church leaders to support the true pope. Finally, Anacletus lost his power, and Innocent II returned as the official bishop of Rome. When Bernard was chosen as an official preacher for the Second Crusade, he inspired many to join the cause for Christ. The Crusade failed, however, because of the cruelty and greed of some crusaders, and Bernard was unjustly blamed. Bernard died in 1153. He is known as one of the founders of the Cistercian order. He was named a Doctor of the Church for his many writings.

Encouraging Parents to Be Leaders of Family Prayer

Ideas to Connect with Preschool Famil ies

As children enter the preschool years, parents are often eager to connect with the parish community in new ways. By signing up for preschool religious education, parents are expressing the desire to incorporate their child more fully in the life of the parish community. Preschool religious education provides a unique opportunity to encourage parents to be leaders in their family’s practice of the faith. Those involved in ministry should take this opportunity to acknowledge parents’ follow-through on the promise they made at their children’s Baptism. At the same time, encourage parents to persevere in attending to their own spiritual needs by finding time for personal prayer each day, especially when things are busy. Parents may welcome simple suggestions for daily prayer, such as a morning prayer, daily Bible verses, or the daily examine. Many parents want to know how to connect more fully with the life of the parish community. For many, Sunday liturgy is already an integral part of their week. Some may not be attending Sunday Mass but may be open to the invitation. Encourage parents to bring their preschool child with them to Mass and be sure to greet both parent and child when you see them. Make it a point to provide parents information about other opportunities to be involved with the parish community. Send home the parish bulletin with the preschool children and perhaps extend special invitations to parents about parish events. Consider making child care is available and in the bulletin, note activities at which children’s participation is especially welcome. As you encourage parents to nurture their own faith life, invite them to consider their role as leaders in their family’s practice of the faith. Preschool children are eager to please their parents and wish to participate in family activities. Catechists, DREs, and parish ministers can propose practices and encourage parents to establish them as part of their daily life. Suggest a variety of opportunities for family prayer, such as the following: -Grace Before and After Meals -Bedtime Prayer -Prayers of Blessing -Devotion to the Saints -Seasonal prayers and activities -Family Rosary Be sure to highlight prayers and practices from a variety of cultures and pay particular attention to devotions and practices that reflect the cultural backgrounds of the families in your parish. Provide resources that include a thorough explanation of the practice, including prayer suggestions and a guide for leading family prayer. Ideally, these resources should be designed to encourage young children’s participation. Finally, help parents to learn to be intentional about their practice of the faith. It takes effort to establish new habits, and it takes time for habits to become a natural part of our life. Encourage parents to anticipate the years ahead when it may be their child who returns the gift to them by recalling these daily rituals and insisting on their importance to family life.

A Parent's Prayer

Loving God, You are the giver of all we possess, the source of all of our blessings. We thank and praise you. Thank you for the gift

of our children. Help us to set boundaries for them, and yet encourage them to explore. Give us the strength and courage to

treat each day as a fresh start. May our children come to know you, the one true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

May your Holy Spirit help them to grow in faith, hope, and love, so they may know peace, truth, and goodness. May their

ears hear your voice. May their eyes see your presence in all things. May their lips proclaim your word. May their hearts be your

dwelling place. May their hands do works of charity. May their feet walk in the way of Jesus Christ,

your Son and our Lord. Amen.
